7 Ways to Save Money as a Fashion Blogger

$

A lot of people have a preconceived notion that as a fashion blogger you’re going to be gifted with lavish “blogger mail”, flying first class, and going to A-list events for free. While Snapchat and Instagram may want you to think that, there’s always more than what meets the eye. Yes, the big timers get some pretty amazing stuff, but for the average style obsessed girl, fashion blogging can be a very expensive side hustle and we could use every way to save money!

1. Recycle outfits.

Ever hear about the 80/20 rule? 80% of the time you wear 20% of your clothes? Well, it’s a real thing and it’s a really great thing for fashion bloggers! You can totally get away with wearing the same jeans or top multiple days in a row as long as you mix and match. Change your shoes, throw on a scarf, add a blazer, etc. This money saving trick works especially well in the winter. You just layer up and no one has any idea what you’re wearing!

2. Buy off-season clothes.

This is my absolute favorite way to save money as a fashion blogger. I have gotten coats that were originally $120 for $20 in May. That’s almost an 85% discount! I bought a $35 romper for $7 once in September. Shop for summer pieces in fall and winter pieces in spring – it’s genius. (Shopping secret: H&M is the best store for this… you’re welcome!)

3. Donate old clothes & write it off.

I’m a huge advocate of donating old clothes, 1. because I’m too lazy to sell them and 2. it helps someone in need. Over the years, I’ve donated close to $3,000 in clothing and accessories and the best part is I got a tax break. Depending on how much you donate, what it’s worth, etc, it may or may not be a great financial break. Almost every second-hand store offers a tax return slip, but be sure to ask for it before leaving.

4. Sell on eBay/Tictail/Depop.

If you’re not lazy like me, you can sell your unworn or lightly used clothes on eBay, Tictail, or Depop. When I’m feeling motivated I will sell on eBay – I find it to be the easiest and most effective. eBay does charge a final value shipping fee, but they’re usually pretty low. Keep in mind, the higher price you sell for, the higher eBay’s fees.

sell your clothing5. Fill your cart & wait.

This money saving trick is amazing and applies to most online stores. Sign into your account of any store of your choice, add desired items to your shopping cart, close the tab/logout, and wait. Usually in a day or two, you’ll get a coupon or sale code for the stuff you wanted as a limited time offer. Then, go back in and make your purchases at the discounted rate. How great is that?! (Shopping secret: Amazon, Target, and CVS are the best.)

6. Closet swap

Closet swapping amongst fashion bloggers is an unconventional and somewhat awkward way to save money, but it works. Have you always wanted that Chloe bag your friend has? Ask to borrow it for a shoot. The more blogger friends you have, the better for both sides!

7. Ask for discounts/samples

With fashion blogging becoming so popular, tons of stores are offering discounts to bloggers. Sheinside offers free clothes to bloggers with over 5,000 followers on social media and A Common Space gives bloggers a discount. Smaller indie brands are more likely to give away samples, if not great discounts to bloggers and all you have to do is ask!

What are your best ways to save money? Tell us in the comments below, we love a good bargain!

xx Britt

All the Tricks You Need to Perfect the Cat Eye

Cat eye. Kitten Eye. Winged Eyeliner. Feline Flick –

Whatever you’d like call it is the one look I’ve strived to master since the primal days of Angelina Jolie in the early 2000s. Something about it was instantly captivating, seductive, all the while so seasonless. So I set out on a journey to master this look, which comes out to be an approximate 10 years now, and I’ve accomplished just that – not only on myself, but others too (which trust me is far more difficult than it looks). Now I’m here to show you exactly how it was done so if you happen to be one of those individuals feeling completely incompetent when it comes to symmetrical eyeliner, search no more!

Don’t lose hope – I’ve tried, I’ve tested, I’ve failed, and I finally vanquished. Now, you can too!

products-to-create-the-perfect-winged-eyeliner

What You Need:

1. Silky black pencil eyeliner (This one by Pixi is AMAZING!)
2. Angled brush of any brand
3. Makeup remover and pointed Q-tips (LOVE Caudalie!!)
4. Gel eyeliner and eyeliner brush (the best kind of brushes are ones like THIS)
5. Liquid Eyeliner (optional)
6. A good black mascara

pencil-eyeliner-cat-eyeangled-brush-winged-eyeliner

1. Take a black eyeliner pencil and trace the top of your eyes (it doesn’t need to be perfect). Pencil is always the most forgiving, that’s why I start with it.

2. With an angled brush, trace over the eyeliner and use the brush to create a diagonal line from the edge of your eyes up and outward as if connecting it to the tail of your eyebrows. This is the baseline for your ‘eyeliner shape’.

pointed-q-tip-for-eye-makeupgel-eyeliner-cat-eye

3. If you mess up or need to fix the shape of your liner, now’s the time. Take a pointed q-tip dipped in makeup remover and clean where needed.

4. Once your shape is perfect and even, take gel eyeliner on a brush and trace over the line you made adjusting the thickness to your liking.

the-perfect-cat-eye-liquid-eyelinerthe-perfect-cat-eye-gel-eyeliner

5. Follow up with liquid eyeliner if you want to set the gel eyeliner or like an intense black liner look.

Now practice over and over until it becomes second nature.

Other Tricks I’ve Picked Up Over the Years:

  • Everyone’s eyelids are uneven though some worse than others. The easiest way to create “even” looking eyeliner is to start on the eyelid that’s smaller. This way, you can adjust the eye with more lid space to match.
  • Sometimes, it’s easier to line your eyes from the outside-in versus inside-out.
  • Watch & Learn – Charlotte Tilbury always said make a “dot” 1/4″ of the way out and use that as your guide to create the perfect flick.
  • Scotch tape & business card – use these as stencils to create a precise wing. (Personally, I’ve never found success in either of them unless I was using eyeshadow.)
  • If you have hooded eyes or monolids, create the shape of the liner with your eyes OPEN.

5 Important Rules for Being Your Own Boss

$
0
0

First of all – celebrate! You’ve had to work bloody hard to be able to transition to this phase of your professional life, and quitting everything else to be self-employed is a fantastic risk with a ton of rewards.

Once the champagne is finished, however, it’s time to knuckle down. You’ve started your side hustle successfully, and I know it’s a tough slog to work a “normal” job while you grow your side hustle, but quitting my job and going full-time freelance was just the “Disney Wedding” moment for me. You think all the trials and tribulations have led you to this fantastic day, but really, the story is just beginning.

be-a-girl-bossAnd that’s a good thing. Because now you are your own boss. And you can be the best damn boss you’ve ever had.

1. Healthy body = healthy mind.

In the beginning, the flexible working day meant I was also flexible about my food and exercise. Maybe that suits you, but if you’re like most people (me included) and you find yourself going to she shops because there are no “work snacks” then let’s get scheduling! It doesn’t mean you need to join a gym – there are tons of workouts you can do from home and great healthy one-serve lunch-at-home meals. This also means being careful with your coffee intake and sitting down in front of screens for long periods of time.

Think of yourself like a boss would: a valuable human resource.

2. Respect your time and others will too.

Unless you enjoy answering emails at 10pm and you offer a service that needs to, let people know what your hours are and stick to them! This is especially critical if you have a partner or a family. Your partner needs to respect your professional time and your clients need to respect your private time.

They can only do this by taking your lead. Be a boss about it!

3. Know your resources!

What are you rich in and what are you poor in? If you’ve just made the change to full-time self-employment, you’ll initially have more time and less money. That means not spending money on anything you could do with your own time – cooking, cleaning, errands, and e-mails. As your business grows, always reassess your workload and financials.

You’ll know when its time to hire someone else, but until then, you are a whole workforce and the boss of it too.

4. Do you really work best from home?

At first it might seem relaxing and lovely to be able to stay home, but look over your productivity levels after a couple of weeks and see if the laptop-in-bed is actually the best thing for your business. It may mean you save costs on office spaces and expensive lunches. It may also mean you miss out on networking opportunities and important industry chats.

If you do find that home is the best place for you, make sure you carve out a workspace that makes you feel good.

5. Dress like your boss.

Studies show that people feel smarter and do better when they wear white lab coats. It’s no secret that what we wear affects how we feel, but our sartorial choices also affect how we perform. What’s that other thing people always say? Dress for the job you want. It’s true. You are your own boss now so make the most of it! Who have you always admired? What kind of person are you working towards being? Fast-track yourself there – just dress like it and you’ll act like it.

Birthday Breakfast for the Birthday Girl – Happy Birthday Zanita!

plum-pancakes-copy

I’m not sure if you are all aware, but today is in fact Zanita’s birthday! I wanted to celebrate this special day with her through a very special recipe that’s full of happiness and festive energy. At first, I thought a cake would be the best solution seeing that it is her birthday, but then I thought that is just too normal for someone so special. So I turned to my trusty pancake recipe and topped them with homemade sweet and tangy syrup. Absolute perfection and the perfect birthday breakfast!

plum-pancakes-mixtureplum-pancakes-prep

Before I go on to the actual recipe, I’d just like to say that this post wouldn’t be possible if it wasn’t for the talented and generous Zanita. I have applied everything that she has taught me over the past few months into one post. One of the first things she taught me was to have confidence in yourself and to say what you feel. Then, she taught me how to edit photos correctly, which I apply to my everyday life because I’m constantly editing photos. She also taught me how easy it is to make GIFs along with the skills one needs to be a successful blogger.

My ability to be a part of the Zanita Studio team has been so unbelievable and changed my life so much. I’ve been able to live two blog experiences at once. The Zanita Studio blog is so big and successful in comparison to my own so it is great to be able to see the potential that lies ahead and the hard work I need to put in to get there. I can also see and learn how a blog is managed from the other side. I’ve been able to explore the world of healthy cooking and eating too. I now put much thought into the ingredients I use that go into my body. Also, she’s allowed me to travel the world without me ever having to step foot outside the borders of my country. I’ve been encouraged to take fashion more seriously and have become familiar with quite a lot of top fashion brands, supermodels, and trends.

Thank you, thank you, and thanks again Zanita. Hope you have a great day and hope to meet you in real life soon.

The Birthday Breakfast: Plum Pancakes

Makes 12 pancakes

Ingredients:

Plum Syrup:

  • 1 cup water
  • 5 plums, cut up
  • ½ cup castor sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • pinch of salt

Pancakes:

  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tbs vegetable oil
  • pinch of salt

Extras:

  • 2 plums
  • fresh mint to garnish

plum-pancakes-pancakesMethod:

Plum Syrup:

Place all of your sauce ingredients into a saucepan over a medium to high heat. Mix together and leave to simmer for about 10 minutes. By that time the plums will have softened and the syrup will have thickened.

Remove from the heat and strain into a bowl through a sieve. Once completely strained, place back into the saucepan over the heat for 5 minutes. By that time, the sauce will have thickened. Remove from the heat and place into a jar or saucer.

Pancakes:

Combine all of your pancake ingredients in a bowl. Mix well until a thin smooth batter forms.

Place a frying pan over a medium heat with a little butter and oil. Leave until the pan is hot.

Pour about ¼ cup of the batter into the pan. Move the pan around so that the batter spreads thinly across the surface of the pan. Pour any excess batter back into the other batter. Leave to cook for a minute and then flip over. Cook for another 30 seconds. Carry on until all of the batter is used up.

Assembly:

Stack your pancakes on a plate. Top it with some chopped plums, pour the sauce over the stack, and garnish with mint leaves. Serve.

Happy cooking!

Interview: Pat McGrath Says Contour The Right Way

If Steven Meisel dominates the photography world, then Pat McGrath runs The World of Make-Up. She created Rooney Mara’s beauty look for Girl With A Dragon Tattoo, has received an MBE, and in 2004, was named Global Design Director for Procter and Gamble with brands like Max Factor and Cover Girl (to name a few) under her belt.

I had the chance to interview her backstage at the Victoria Beckham show in NYC and little did I know, Pat was already teasing us with her latest product launch: Skin Fetish 003. The buzz is building, especially after the raging success of Gold 001, the surreal foil-like gold pigment released last year. Skin Fetish 003 is a collection of two three-piece highlighting kits, which officially debuted on the Valentino runway this past season. With only 25,000 available, it’s sure to be snapped up quickly – you might want to get on the Sephora waitlist because this is a big deal.

Anyway – back to the Victoria Beckham show and my patient wait go behind the curtains and see Pat McGrath at work.

pat-mcgrath-victoria-beckham-runway-makeupWhen I arrived, the models were rehearsing for the show, Pat attended, checking the looks under the lights, and the beauty team – some 20 strong (but can be as large as 50) – calmly waiting for her return. The looks created were complementary to Victoria’s minimal elegance. I saw three styles – one with a strong burgundy lip (that’s Max Factors ‘Always Elegant‘ over ‘Sunset Red‘), one with with a burnt brown eye, and another with a deep green eye. Final touches began as Pat returned to the room and there was certainly a more relaxed vibe than the mania I’ve grown to appreciate backstage. There was confidence over ego here and professional respect. It’s something that has held strong over her 20-year career.

“You’ve either got it or you haven’t – humility. Leave your ego at home. If someone asks you to remove the make-up, don’t bring the house down brick by brick.”

Pat embraces social media, while she still travels with three trunks of books for references – she’s been quick to adapt to the digital generation. “Right now everyone is obsessed with make-up and what that’s done for the industry is amazing.” She’s clearly a positive thinker when it comes to change; we spoke about about some of the viral trends seen on Instagram.

“The contouring thing…people will end up learning how to do it properly. It’s for going out at night…it’s great if you’re super young, but it makes you look older. So IF you’re older, you need to learn to do it in a fresh young way. That’s how I would do it.”

pat-mcgrath-makeup-artist-vogue-magazineI often wonder what’s the real difference between the women who love make-up and the woman who’s named Most Influential Make-up Artist in the World by Vogue. There’s plenty of talent out there. It’s clear to me that Pat is a woman who embraces the fun in what she does, knows when to take herself seriously, and is passionately inspired by the creative side of the fashion industry.

“Be yourself, don’t worry about mistakes, don’t worry that you’re not perfect – you can do whatever you want. That’s why there’s so much out there – so you don’t have to feel any fear when experimenting with make-up because you can always take it off. “

Thanks so much to Pat McGrath and the Max Factor team for this incredible opportunity. Truly inspirational!

Lessons in Being A Lady Boss: Lauren Conrad Edition

$

0

If there’s only one dominating female out there we can relate to, it’s definitely Lauren Conrad.

She’s not just another pretty face, but someone incredibly business savvy with razor-sharp focus – proven not through her timeline as a reality T.V. star, but by sustaining a profitable business beyond that. Lauren Conrad is two clothing lines deep with two insanely attractive websites (the recently revamped Laurenconrad.com and The Beauty Department). She’s also now launching her NINTH book, Celebrate. How exactly does she do that when the majority of us can’t even get one website going or a single book published in an entire lifetime? We’re certainly fond of the babe so we did a bit of profiling for you (and ourselves). Her evolution and success over the years are beyond inspiring so learn by example and start taking notes:

#1 Always be approachable and relatable.

Ever heard the saying “Nice guys finish last” (in this case, girls). Nope, LC fans admit that her charm stems from her ability to come off very girl-next-door despite her popularity and success. She’s a nice girl overflowing with positive energy and it’s indicated in every inch of her brand. Her background from ordinary intern to major success makes her that much more likable – walking proof that hard work trumps luck any day.

#2 Pay attention to your fans!

There is no better way to build relationships with your fans than through social media obviously, but the key is to be real about it and actually listen. Through personal appearances and connecting with her fans in person, she was able to capitalize on what the masses wanted from her – this was exactly how her website and books came about. She also has a knack for cross-promoting her business ideas in a very subtle and unintentional way and people aren’t bothered when you do this. That is how you build long-lasting relationships.

lauren-conrad-clothing-books-success

#3 Actions speak louder than words.

It’s not about shining the light on yourself all the time or self-promoting too much. Don’t ask people to like or follow you. If you’re likable or have something to show for, people will follow. Focus on the work, the product, the visuals at hand and the rest will come. LC is so inspiring because of her journey and her effort – not words.

#4 In Lauren Conrad’s own words, “Create opportunity”.

To think that LC’s success story has been a walk in the park is foolish. Without capitalizing on #1, #2, and #3, she would have never gotten to where she is. Those exact three points led her to juggle the multiple businesses she runs today. Key Takeaway: Listen and then create.

#5 Don’t stop.

Running several business ventures doesn’t come without risk and setbacks. The most important thing, however, is to not get stuck on those setbacks. The dots always connect backwards and you’ll be amazed at the results that come to life if you continue to work hard and stay focused – something Lauren has truly mastered.

Here’s Why the Instagram Update Isn’t a Problem

$
0
0

In the last 36 hours, everyone thought an Instagram update was barging in and so their feeds flooded with some disparity of:

Turn on your post notifications so you don’t miss any updates!

If you felt zero impact in the madness, good for you – what was that delusion anyway? Basically, Instagram announced it will no longer post images in chronological order, instead you’ll be fed the Instagram update (aka The Algorithm) – content based on your behavior, preferences, and post popularity. The masses are falling into hysteria, thinking it’s going to cut out the little guy, but it’s likely not going to be like that – our theory anyway. Look, Instagram itself said HERE that the posts will stay where they are. So think of it this way – you’ll just see more of the stuff you like, e.g. the ones you put likes on and the ones that get a percentage of likes quickly whether those red hearts are from 10 followers or 20,000! There are Instagrammers with larger followings, but low engagement – the Algorithm probably won’t work for those guys, but it makes perfect sense.

the-instagram-update-new-algorithm

So calm down. Your content WILL NOT be less visible with the Instagram update. We’re not convinced it’s problematic and here’s why:

#1 If your followers follow a shit ton of others, they’re already missing out.

Again, quoted by Instagram, “People miss about 70% of their feeds anyway.” It’s likely your posts are flying past them at the rate content goes live these days.

#2 Who wants their phones binging or pulsating with every update?

instagram-update-going-live
Do you know what turning on notifications truly entail? That means your phone will go off with every update for every person, brand, or thing you turn it on for. That means in meetings, on the toilet, when you’re talking on the phone, and when you’re trying to sleep! If someone truly wants to see your stuff, they’ll come looking for you. Don’t do that to them…

#3 It hasn’t even truly happened (yet).

Instagram tweeted 3 days ago that nothing has rolled out! But fact of the matter is, it’s going to happen regardless – there’s no use in grieving.

#4 If your fans continue to like, they’ll continue to see.

As long as your followers double tap as they do, your posts aren’t falling into limbo. If someone isn’t engaged in your content, they probably shouldn’t be following you anyway. Remember, you want quality over quantity when it comes to your audience.

#5 Focus on good content and engagement, then you’ll rise to the top.

The Instagram update forces you (content creator) to be value-driven because it ensures crap content that gets no engagement gets no viewership. And isn’t that the best way to give users the best experience? So last but not least, content first!

The Best Robe for the Streets (Not the Bedroom)

If fall/winter was characterized by fur and shearling, what is Spring’s equivalent?

The bomber? It’s been making rounds, right? What about the leather jacket – is it too hot for that? Trench coats seem to make great barriers against the expected April deluge, but no, it’s probably denim – that’s where the rage is at. Think again and think original.

The funny thing about outerwear in the Spring is that it almost feels like an oxymoron. You wake up and it’s annoyingly cold (because we’re completely over winter now), but you know a few hours in, the sun will be out – warm and high. However, you throw on a jacket because it’s necessary – it’s really cold outside. Then come lunch, you’re unnecessarily secreting bodily fluids because of that sun, which you knew would rise, but the jacket was an obligatory layering piece. That aggravating cycle will last about another 2-3 weeks (perhaps longer for others).

best robe as outerwear pfw 2016So how to combat this hitch in the interim?

Thankfully, there’s a new (and useful) companion in town – one that covers up without the sweat. And that is the robe (sometimes, known as the kimono). Whether stolen from the beautiful geishas or out of the bedroom – we’re not sure, but that doesn’t matter because the robe literally looks wicked cool with everything – layered over dresses or denim.

Now here, we have the best robe selection you can bring to the streets!

Take it from Anna and Marie (below) – they show you exactly how to work it in undone and cropped denim styles with flat sandals or sneakers – there is no wrong way whether you’re mixing the versatile piece with bohemian elements or minimalism, just let the robe do it’s thing.

8 Helpful Apps to Take Control of Your Life & Stay Sane

$

In today’s world, we can pretty much do everything from our phones shy of toasting bread or walking the dog (maybe we can do those things too, I haven’t checked!). I won’t deny – I have way too many apps on my phone and…guess what? I don’t even use half of them. Classic case of the 80/20 principle – 20% of them get 80% of my attention – that 20% being the most helpful apps.

When getting through a rough day, or just any day, I’ve really nailed it down so now I’m sharing my little secret – the most helpful apps to conquer all:

1. Headspace

I’ve only just started using Headspace, but it’s already having a positive impact on my life. Headspace is a meditation app that takes you from newb to enlightened guru! Well maybe not that far but it’s an excellent introduction to the world of awareness and consciousness. Start your morning with just 5 or 10 minutes and see how focused, calm, and positive you’ll feel throughout the day. I like to do my Headspace right after getting up and before my morning coffee. IOS / Android

2. Way of Life

Ever heard the classic, “What gets measured, gets managed”?

Way of Life allows you to set daily goals, habits, and tasks you want to achieve and lets you to check them off every night. Sounds simple, right? Well it’s a little bit more powerful and effective than that.

WoL allows you to track both positive and negative habits such as “Read my book”, “Went for a run”, and “Ate a shit ton of chocolate”. It then gives you graphs and statistics to track your progress and obvious trends. IOS / Android

helpful-apps-for-everydayWhat I’m tracking:

  • 2L of water per day
  • Read my book
  • Exercise
  • Used Headspace
  • 30 mins technology free

3.VSCO

VscoCam is my go to photo-editing app! It has everything you need from manually adjusting exposure to the opacity of filters. I run every photo through this app.  IOS / Android

4. Spotify

You can pretty much listen to anything no matter your mood – it has you covered. I love random searches – there’s always a playlist ready for you. IOS / Android

Fun Fact: When making dumplings the other day, I searched “Chinese Cooking Music” and boom, there it was. Pretty sure that’s why they tasted so damn delicious. 😜

5. Evernote

I’m a list master – I write everything down so I find Evernote super handy. It gets you organized for life! You can take photos, write notes, and create different folders to organise them all. The best part about it is Evernote works on your phone and computer, then wirelessly syncs everything, making it super easy to work across multiple platforms. IOS / Android

6. Instagram

This is an obvious one, but I’m an extremely visual person so I love using Instagram to share what I’m up to and of course, to find inspiration – follow me @monicabestek  |  IOS / Android

8. Snapchat

Time Travel with Donald Trump: A Lady’s Guide

$

It’s 2016, the reign of The Supreme Queen Bey. Donald Trump has binge-watched Mad Men on Netflix (no chill) and seems to be getting really cranky about how much women are kicking butt these days compared to the end of the 1950s. (He keeps deleting his tweets about it though – so weird!) To give you a hand, I put myself in Trump’s toupee and wrote a little guidebook for how he’d like you to behave once he’s POTUS – because if he gets in, all us “pieces of ass” will be doing the time warp in pantyhose and weird pointy bras together.

Chapter  1

“It doesn’t really matter what [the media] writes as long as you’ve got a young and beautiful piece of ass.” – Donald Trump.

We are here on earth to be big boobs and a great ass and thin everywhere in between. Don’t worry about juice cleanses though, we can learn from our WW2 sisters for when Donald gets us into WW3. Nothing makes dieting easier than food rations. “Quitting Sugar” will be so much easier when there is literally none. Side note: Cancel your waxing appointment, girls! Leg hair was fiiine in the 1950s, and you probably couldn’t drive anyway.

Chapter  2

“If Hilary can’t satisfy her husband what makes her think she can satisfy America?” – Future President of Satisfaction (Donald Trump)

things donald trump said about womenLet’s give Donald the benefit of the doubt here and interpret this to mean that our sexual prowess is directly related to our ability to rule a nation. Hell yeah! I don’t know about you, but this is great news for me. Shall I put it on my resume? I’ll put it on my resume. Oh wait, see Chapter 3 regarding my inability to work at all. (While we’re talking about satisfying partners, I would like to note that Donald is currently enjoying the company of his third model-or-pageant-winning wife so he’s obviously an expert in the field of satisfying his meaningfully-chosen partners.)

Chapter  3

“She does have a very nice figure…I’ve said if Ivanka weren’t my daughter, perhaps I’d be dating her.” – Grand Master D-Bag (Donald Trump)

If you’re 23, you need to be married (to a man) with babies inside or around you (preferably both). Be careful how you raise his children though because it seems risky for daughters to be too good-looking in a Donald Trump-run state of affairs. Also, be careful with how you schedule feeding time because he says pumping breast milk is “disgusting, disgusting, disgusting”. He’s had kids with each of his three wives though so who knows! In a Donald-endorsed future/past, the father of your child probably won’t even be around either! Good news about your status as wife & mother @ 22 is you don’t need to work anymore! Bad news is that in the 50’s, you weren’t actually allowed to and Donald seems keen on taking us all back in time.

Chapter 3 is where Donald’s grand plan starts emerging – that what he really wants is for all the ladies to stay home and lovingly tend to their husbands’ growing yet malting wig collections. I’m not saying the world will end if he’s POTUS, I’m just saying that it will for women.

beauty gift guide from aerin AERIN Eyelight Concealer | Rose Oil | Mediterranean Honeysuckle Fragrance

The glory in gifts is that they never require time or approval – you do it because you care and to show someone how valuable they are to you. Just think about how much more special you feel with the spontaneity of receiving something you totally never expected. In this case, you can’t ever go wrong with a beauty gift whether she’s a tomboy or a girl who has everything, especially when it’s as luxe and chic as the goods from AERIN. There’s just something about pampering your skin and indulging in the TLC it needs, which we usually don’t have enough time for, that flowers and jewelry can’t beat. The range you have to cast from are plentiful and we’re certain you’ll find something to startle her (and yourself).

3 Simple Tips to Land Your Dream Job

$
0
0

There’s a difference between getting paid and getting paid to do what you love. Which one are you doing?

Too often, too many are doing the latter because the path from job to dream job is just too far, too difficult, and impossible. But never lose hope in your dreams! Here are 3 simple tips to get you started:

#1 Start Early.

No one knows exactly what their dream job is from the get-go, but NBD because that’s constantly evolving. The important thing is to start early for the sake of First Mover Advantage – something we’re taught in business school. The concept that says a business, or in this case person, can gain a competitive advantage through a control of resource by being an early adopter. Apply this to life and it makes perfect sense – look at Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, plus all the top fashion bloggers. So start now even if it’s through process of elimination. The sooner you do that, the more time you have to do what you like. That’s not to say look for a new job every three months because three months isn’t enough time for you to gain substantial skills or knowledge. Key Lesson: Just start now.

how to get your dream job

#2 Update Your Resume Often.

To mull over your career journey sans action is an easy task, but this alone doesn’t provide the visual impact you need. That’s why updating your resume is so damn crucial even if you’re not in the employment market. Albeit tedious, your resume forces you to analyze your work history free of time constraints and review your accomplishments, both menial and remarkable. Writing it down paints a pretty picture of the path you need to get on and brings focus on how to get there. It also helps your resume stay fresh in a rapidly changing and competitive environment. Key Lesson: Look at your resume every 6 months.

#3 Think Skills, Not Experience, then Think Outside the Box.

We’ve been fed that experience triumphs all though I believe the world’s revolutionized too much for that, especially in creative fields. There are too many tools and resources the web offers, which were absent to all generations prior; we’re also connected in so many unbelievable ways, so to think you’re just inexperienced sounds quite foolish. If you’re not in your dream job, focus on the skills to get there – skills will give you experience. Get out there and DO even if no one can see because if you do it enough, eventually somebody will. (Thanks to Z & G for seeing me!! And if you need inspiration, here’s a funny story to thinking outside the box!) Key Lesson: Build your skills either through self-practice or education.

How to Wear the Trendy Blue Eye Makeup

$

I never thought I’d find myself in blue eye makeup again. But when it grazed the SS16 catwalks, I couldn’t help but wonder how to fuse it into my life without appearing to have sprung forward from the 70s and 80s.

Then, I learned quickly how simple of a task that was because there are really only two obvious details intrinsic to the mentioned period:

  1. Frosty, powdery formulas
  2. Certain shades of blue (Aqua, baby, and neon/highlighter shades – unless you’re an expert)

As long as you can avoid those very two things, there’s nothing to be afraid of. Blue eye makeup can look completely fresh and modern and it’s much easier to wear than you think. Here’s a look I created inspired by youth and elegance:

how-to-wear-blue-eye-makeup-trend

The easiest way to wear blue eye makeup is with eyeliner whether that’s liquid or pencil and the easiest color is navy!

The line can be as thin or thick as you’d like. For a bolder look, opt for a thick winged liner as I did using the Lancome Art Liner in Sapphire. Another option is to create a thin line using a pencil liner, like Rimmel Eyeshadow Stick – Naughty Navy or Stila Smudge Stick – Shimmering Navy Blue, then smudge it out for a soft, smokey look. Blue eyeshadow is just as effective as eyeliner in this case. You can also just follow my smokey eye tutorial here and replace the main eyeshadow color with blue!

And if you’re still scared, line your eyes as you normally would with black eyeliner. Then, take a pencil brush and smudge blue eyeshadow into the liner for the slightest hint of blue. Although Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Gunmetal is described as ‘gray’, it has very subtle blue tones in it, which makes a great option for blending into black.

Bringing back a bit of lessons from art class here – blue’s complementary color on the color wheel is orange! An orange lipstick, like Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick – Siren, makes a perfect pairing with blue eyeliner. Plus, it’s super duper fresh for the Spring/Summer toasty nights. In this particular look, I chose Nars Velvet Lip Pencil in Cruella for my lips because it’s a bit more sophisticated yet looks just as good!

What are your thoughts? Are you for blue?

How to Kill It In an Interview

$
0
0

I think many people will agree with me when I say an interview is one of the most nerve-wrecking things you can ever go through. The hiring manager looks you up and down and judges your every move waiting for a slip. And there you are hot flashing like a middle-aged woman, sweating, and feeling sick to your stomach. No? Only me?

Ok, well forget any fear you do have because you’re going to learn how to kill it in an interview. Right. Now.

Act like you have nothing to lose.

When you act like you have nothing to lose, you usually end up gaining something. Hopefully the job you’re interviewing for is something you’re passionate about, which makes showing your confidence and enthusiasm easy enough.

This includes keeping eye contact, even if it’s uncomfortable, sitting with good posture, and appearing as relaxed as possible. The worst that can happen is you don’t get the job and you stay in the same place you are right now.

Create a conversation.

I never understood why my mom said the longer the interview the better…until I was rejected 9 times out of 10. Now I get it. When your interview is longer than 10 minutes, that typically means a conversation has been started.

As your interview goes from drill sergeant Q&A to relaxed conversation and getting to know one another, you know you’re in. Connecting with your hiring manager on a deeper level is key.

During one of my interviews, I discovered my interviewer was a substitute teacher for a while and so was I. Another one of my interviewers’ wives had a blog and fashion line. I received offers from both of those companies because I was able to connect and keep a conversation going.

how to kill it in an interviewTake your time.

One of the biggest mistakes you can make in an interview is answering too quickly. Despite the “awkward silence”, your interviewer will appreciate a well-thought out answer versus an impulsive one. Because your every word is scrutinized, you want your answers to align with the company culture and vibe of interviewer. Usually, you’ll sense how things are going within the first 5 minutes.

Ask questions.

A good question elicits a good answer. People value people who ask questions; it shows you care and you’re willing to learn more.

A good question is not, ‘How much is the salary?’ or ‘How much vacation time do we get?’. A good question is something like ‘What do you love about working here?’ or ‘What’s one of the biggest challenges the company faces?’.

Be memorable. Be witty. Be friendly. But most of all, be yourself. If I can do it, anyone can.

Tell me your best or worst interview experience below!

xx Britt

6 Inspiring Snapchats You Need to be Following

Snapchat’s dominating the world one day at a time…

and we’re right there with it. No doubt the world is moving to real-time – e-mail is officially too slow and even text is losing its instantaneity. And now, we have Snapchat giving us the ability to peek into the lives of just about everyone we envy on the spot and the best part is it’s unedited, raw, and real as ever. No photoshop, but it does offer those addictively genius filters (rainbow vomit and squishy face) that are insanely fun to use. We’ll always have a place in our hearts for Instagram and the live features our friends at Facebook are making happen (Hello Facebook LIVE), but Snapchat has a magic to it that ain’t going anywhere anytime soon.

inspiring snapchats to followIf you need assistance navigating the cool kids’ block, leave it to us. These are the inspiring Snapchats you need to be following:

Carin Olsson

@carin-olsson
Carin is a brilliant Swedish photographer who’s worked with brands like Dior and Gucci. Lust-worthy life aside, Carin documents life in Paris and shares the occasional behind-the-scenes snaps. She has the most adorable and honest “from where I stand” fast walks and is always sure to make note of the simplest things in life like the beautiful sun, her cozy pillows, and the charming streets of Paris. Her Snapchat is a graceful reminder to find appreciation in everything around you.

Bryanboy

@bryanboy
If you’re not already following Bryan, go now. Notoriously known for his flamboyant and lively persona, there’s good reason behind that IDGAF attitude – he’s the perfect role model for ‘just doing you’ – living life to the fullest, wearing whatever the hell you want, all the while being totally unconcerned of everyone else’s biases or judgements #YOLO. He’s also hilarious, crazy, and full of witty life observations. If you need to lighten things up, let him be the one to remind you not to take yourself too seriously. His Snapchat is lots of fun, but definitely NOT at all G-rated.

Casey Neistat

fashion bloggers to follow on snapchat @caseyneistat
Casey is an engaging Filmmaker/Youtuber based in NYC who’s super talented and innovative. He was famous for snowboarding around NYC this past winter. You gotta be active to catch him because he doesn’t post a lot but when he does, it’s guaranteed to be something interesting. And one thing is for sure – he’ll inspire the adventure in you!

Brooke Testoni

@brooketestoni
Brooke is a super stylish Aussie in Sydney who knows how to work a good story. She’s got some wicked outfit ideas and travels to incredible locations – the epitome of dream life! Her snaps are really personal and a true reflection of who she is, which is always inspiring to see how someone of that stature can be so personable and relatable.

Caroline Vreeland

@cvxx
The fashion royalty-born singer (i.e. the great granddaughter of the infamous Diana Vreeland if you didn’t know) and BFF of Peach Love Shea, she’s as raw as it gets. Literally, NO FILTER and tells you exactly how it is. This just goes to show fashion elitists are just as human as the rest of us. She candidly shares the highs and lows of life and exposes the real deal on LA, not just the pretty things we see from our favorite West Coast Bloggers. She also loves eating and telling jokes. Caroline gives the #realtalk!

Jacey Dupree

@damselindior
And lastly, another LA local – a fashion blogger who openly shares the fun details of her life and the silly things fashion bloggers do (like take 100 pictures of a single cocktail to get the right Instagram shot). She isn’t afraid to tell it like it is, which is of course done sarcastically and cleverly – very funny if you’re in desperate need of a midday break.

A Surprisingly Special & Unique Spaghetti Recipe

black squid ink pastaraw calamari

Quite a while back I had a weekend like no other! Here’s the full story that led me to make the most delicious Squid dish:

I had an art project for the term to create something within the theme of familiar space using unconventional materials. As I always want to stand out from the crowd and be different, I decided to venture into the world of sculpture. I chose my dreams as the familiar space and one in particular where I could fly. Thanks to my mom being a ceramicist, I was able to create a sculpture at home out of clay, but that was not enough. I had to somehow transform the material into something unconventional so I decided to use candle wax. With a little Youtube research, I discovered that that you can make a professional looking mould using household silicone – it worked perfectly after a few tests. I was able to make a mock sculpture mould and reproduce it with melted candle wax. So I went on to complete my sculpture and all seemed to be going to plan. When I fired it in the kiln, the face unexpectedly popped off and broke into 4 pieces. I should emphasize that the deadline was this past Friday and I had already been given an extension. On top of that, I was at a sports event the day it came out of the kiln and slept at my granny’s house because my dad’s been away – she lives on the other side of the mountain. On another note, I tried out for the sports event, but didn’t make it into any of the races so I offered to help out with the time keeping. I ended up doing all of the teacher’s work for them – ran up and down the stairs endlessly to hand in times to the people recording the them on top of the stadium. I basically did more running than the runners, so when I got home this past Friday, I was exhausted.

I came home to my lovely sculpture with cracks through his face (thankfully my grandpa, the handyman, came to the rescue and pieced it back together). I went on to make the silicon mould of the sculpture, which went perfectly. I melted the candle wax, added some black ink (which doesn’t mix very well with wax), poured it into the mould, and waited a few minutes before I tried to remove it from the silicone. But it was too soon and fell to pieces. I quickly put it back in the mould and waited a bit longer. When I tried to remove it again, it was still in pieces. I then melted more wax to act as a glue and played the waiting game. Long story short, the attempt failed so I moved on. I started with the silicone mould again and as I was preparing it, my very fragile sculpture fell off the table into pieces. I picked it up and tried to glue it together with silicone, but that failed. I then tried to piece it together in the wet silicone mould, but that didn’t work either. So I removed the sculpture from the wet sticky silicone and cut my thumb on one of the cracks in the process. I think the best way to react to this kind of situation is to just laugh it off, so I did.

I asked my mom for assistance when she came home and she helped. Then, we all lived happily ever after. The moral of the story is that patience is key, get support from others, and always keep your workstation clean and safe. The end.

If all else fails, make pasta – a unique spaghetti recipe!

cooking raw calamarispaghetti recipe with calamari and chili

As I write this, my fingers are in absolute agony; in fact, my skin is peeling from yesterday’s hot candle wax episode. I wanted to lift my spirits by cooking so I made this dramatic fish-inspired dish. I had some black squid ink pasta** lying around and calamari rings so I threw them together along with chili, lemon zest and juice, spring onion, and a little sea salt. The result was fantastic and delicious. It was perfectly fresh and salty with the right amount of heat from the chili. I was instantly lifted after eating it all!

The Special Spaghetti Recipe (Black Spaghetti + Squid):

Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 250g squid ink pasta
  • 1 tbs olive oil
  • 1 red chili, deseeded and finely chopped
  • Zest and juice of one lemon
  • 3 spring onions, finely chopped
  • 100g calamari rings
  • 2 tsp sea salt

Method:

Boil a pot of water to cook the pasta. Once cooked, drain the water (save 1 tablespoon for later), and drizzle the pasta with a little olive oil.

Pour the olive oil in warm pan over medium heat. Add the chili, lemon juice and zest, and spring onion. Cook through for 1 minute. Add the calamari to the pan and cook for another 2-3 minutes. Add the saved cooking liquid to the pan and mix.

Place the cooked pasta into your calamari pan and mix through. Serve.

isabel marant look with patent leather pants

Social media may have fooled us into thinking we can’t dress the part without a huge budget when it comes to looking a certain way (i.e. effortlessly cool…i.e. the Isabel Marant look), but we’ve proven otherwise…it ain’t gotta be sooo expensive.

Get ready for pre-fall 2016 with these patent leather pants (the best thing is they’re 59% off). Remember when we told you the trend would be a huge hit? If Marant herself is incorporating patent leather into her designs, they’re bound to be ubiquitary as is the case with almost everything from the French designer. You’re probably thinking it’s getting a little hot to make good use of now, but think of it as an investment for the future – you’ll be set come September and ahead of the game. Studded boots are also starting to feel fresh again, even more so when there are multiple buckles involved (soft grunge for the win) and the polo (this window pane one is super budget friendly) – we’ll leave it to Zanita to show you how to bring it back.

5 Job Application Mistakes You’re Making That’s Costing the Job

$
0
0

If you didn’t get the memo, we’re hiring…

interns – that is. Check out the job description HERE and if you think you’re a good fit, send your resume and cover letter to career@zanita.com. That being said, we thought we’d give you a helping hand…

As a successful entrepreneur, it’s obvious you get to romp in some pretty unbelievable, self-indulging action like fashion week, travel, and freedom, but you’re still obliged to run the not so glamorous aspects like HR, financials, and sales. The real business. In today’s case, we’re focusing on the HR piece: recruiting and hiring talent. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to feel out who may or may not be a good fit, but it does take time and effort to appear a good fit before the conversation arises.

From first-hand experience rifling through e-mails and more, we’re divulging the most common job application mistakes we’re seeing.

common job application mistakes Mistake #1: You’re not reading the job description or instructions.

Location, requirements, and qualifications – do you fall in all three categories? You may not fit the description 100% but you should fit at least 70% of it before you consider applying. You’ve got to read and follow the instructions as they’re written. If you fail to follow something that simple, how can a company trust you with bigger, more important things?

Mistake #2: Your resume, cover letter, and/or e-mail has errors.

Every single resume advice forum or website you read stresses grammar and spelling redundantly because it seems that no matter how much it’s plastered over the internet and across college campuses, applicants continue to produce those little bloopers. It’s a deal breaker. Writing is a prerequisite in fashion when you’re dealing with journalism, social media, or public relations. Reach out to a friend, family member, or mentor with excellent writing skills and have him/her proofread it to the tee!

Mistake #3: You’re not selling yourself.

The point of a resume/cover letter is to make a killer first impression! If you’re using too much of a passive voice, you’re doing harm. Also, we get that you’ve worked here and done this, but what does that mean? The more skills you can show and the more open-minded you are, the better vibe we get from you!

Mistake #4: Your resume includes irrelevant data.

Anything pre-postsecondary school – you can scrap. For one, it’s probably making your resume longer than one page and if you have less than 5 years of experience, there’s no reason to have a 2-page resume. Bonus: If your resume is showing tasks, modify it to include results.

Mistake #5: Watch the length and formatting.

As mentioned in #4, one-pagers for resumes unless you’ve got 5+ years under your belt. As for cover letters, one page is sufficient as well; however, e-mail cover letters should be concise. No hiring manager is going to thoroughly read 5 full paragraphs in e-mail format. You’re better off writing 5 sentences and attaching your cover letter with your resume. Also, be mindful of any pre-made templates or tables because the formatting can be all out of line on the other side.

Alright so fix those pesky job application mistakes and get them rolling in! We look forward to hearing from you!
