I don’t feel like talking much about how stressed out I am at the moment, so let me talk about the positivity in my life (sorry if I seem like an I-specialist). This term, our art project at school is to create something around the theme of Recognising and Resisting injustice. The topic is based on the Holocaust and Resistance Art of South Africa made during Apartheid. These are two pretty serious and intense issues that I don’t feel I could justify, so I decided to go for something more positive and current, World Peace. You can call me naïve, but it’s completely okay to imagine a world of complete peace and harmony. I decided to create an embroidery (to show the bringing together of lost cultures) made using Shwe-shwe fabric (traditional African patterned fabric) and coloured thread. In the beginning I thought of using felt, but I couldn’t relate to the material. I’m going to create an image of women of all the cultures in the world. What I love most about the idea is that I get to embrace my African culture. I’ve been inspired by traditional African embroidery techniques and patterns. Here’s a test sample I made.

art-practice-emboidery

Then, my design project for the term is to create an environmental campaign for the beaches or oceans of the world. I chose the ocean because I found out that it’s basically a dumping sight for the earth’s waste. It’s sad because that’s basically destroyed the homes of our sea creatures. I looked specifically at the effects of this dumping on the coral reefs – these beautifully coloured corals have been reduced to lifeless grey nothingness thanks to us humans. But on that note, lets talk about some tomatoes now. So these got to be the most delicious stuffed tomatoes with their salty and smokey flavour from the addition of olives, parmesan, and paprika. They are stuffed with butter beans and various others, meaning they are totally gluten free and vegetarian. As they bake in the oven, the tomatoes soften slightly but form a crispy skin. The filling warms up and the flavours merge into one delicious stuffed tomato.

Baked Stuffed Tomatoes

Makes 8 stuffed tomatoes

Ingredients:

  • 8 large tomatoes
  • 2 tins butter beans, drained and rinsed
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • 100g pitted and chopped olives
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • ½ tsp ground paprika
  • 3 tbs chopped parsley, plus extra for garnishing
  • 2 tbs grated parmesan cheese
  • Sea salt and black pepper to taste
  • Olive oil for drizzling

Method:

Slice the tops off the tomatoes and remove the pulp from the inside using a spoon. Place onto a baking dish.

In bowl, combine the remaining ingredients excluding the olive oil. Mix together well and slightly crush the butter beans. Taste the seasoning and add salt to your liking.

Stuff the tomatoes with the mixture. Cover with their tops. Drizzle with olive oil and place into the preheated oven. Leave to cook for about 20-25 minutes or until tender, but still slightly firm.

Remove from the oven and serve warm with a little more olive oil, lemon wedges, and parsley.

6 Branding Tips We Learned From Today’s Most Influential Digital Stars

$

If you’re at all active in the digital space, you’ve got a personal brand whether or not you intended on it.

How that brand is viewed in the eyes of others is defined and led entirely by you. The power digital influencers have today is rather impressive – so much that they’re racking up quite the haters, but as Zanita enlightened us here, the influencer economy isn’t going anywhere. In fact, even despite the inundated pool of cognoscente, we’d bet that now’s the best time to build your social presence because only the best can rise to the top with a much wiser audience (and brands). Wondering just how to do that? We’ve culled the branding tips you need from some of today’s most successful Insta-stars!

#1 Jules Sariñana of Sincerely Jules

Everyone knows that Jules is the epitome of easy, breezy west-coast cool, which is becoming quite the cliche on Instagram. Though we yawn at these tropes, we’ll never get tired of her in particular because she was one of the first and few adopters who nailed the aesthetic, building an empire out of it with her burgeoning business, Shop Sincerely Jules. Key Takeaway: You need to adopt a unique identity early on and be consistent with it – every single aspect of Jules’ outfit, daily details, and text shared exudes nothing but easy, breezy cool and that’s exactly how it became engraved in her name.

#2 Chris Lin & Brock Williams of Yummertime

The new and hip can certainly rise to the top as Chris & Brock have validated… We learn here that positive vibes always win! They channel that with their pastel wall signature, direct sunlit pictures, and tongue-in-cheek props (pizza! who doesn’t love pizza?!). They’re never too serious and that mood is conceded throughout the Yummertime brand. Key Takeaway: Define your brand with a signature pose, prop, or color and carry that string throughout your digital presence. That’s how you stay recognizable.

iskra branding tips#3 Iskra Lawrence of @iamiskra

An impressive, almost 2m followers on Instagram, Iskra is surely doing something right. She’s special because she doesn’t embody the ideal Insta-babe – no thigh gap, no bikini bridge, but she embraces her body beautifully and confidently. What’s not to love about a confident woman?! Body shaming comments like elephant ankles, as she mentioned, doesn’t bother her the slightest and she encourages everyone to feel sexy in their own skin. Key Takeaway: You don’t need to fit society’s mold of beauty. Don’t be afraid to show the world the real you! People will love you for that and that itself should be your personal brand!

#4 Irene Kim of @ireneisgood

Being a model might sound like the easy way into social, but that’s not always the case especially when you’re not a big-time model to begin with. Irene attracted a large social following with her adventurous spirit, namely her unicorn hair – the look that made Irene ‘Irene’ today. The funny thing is no one wanted Irene to dye her hair and she didn’t ask for permission although she knew her agency would disapprove. And look what it did… Key Takeaway: Don’t be afraid of the naysayers. Don’t be afraid to be different. If you feel strongly about a certain look that may not be widely accepted now, just go for it and ride the waves.

#5 Negin Mirsalehi of Negin Mirsalehi

The Dutch blogger rose to fame within a year of starting her Instagram and blog through one simple tactic: posting consistently and staying active in the Insta-community (following others hoping they’d follow back). The tactic worked, but only because Negin had already nailed her personal brand: a sunny and fashionable life (though a pretty face and lush locks don’t hurt). Key Takeaway: Experiment early and often, then see how viewers react. Engage and interact with the community by following people you admire and then following their followers. That’s how you gain traction.

patricia bright branding tips

#6 Patricia Bright of Patricia Bright

Patricia is a new mom who isn’t afraid to speak out on the pressing, and often times difficult, issues of young women today. She uses fashion and beauty to rebut those insecurities and proudly wears her heart on her sleeve. In Patricia’s light, there isn’t a pretentious sense of oversharing, which is appreciated when she’s so candid and grateful. Key Takeaway: Care about the community you’re building, take an interest in them, and express gratitude often! Patricia genuinely shows she cares about the overall being of her followers. People appreciate when you’re kind enough to give back.

#2 Layer it over jeans

How to Work From Home One Day a Week

$
0
0

The realty is, almost all jobs can be done from home in today’s world. Teachers, receptionists, engineers, fashion designers, realtors, you name it – they technically don’t have to be face-to-face with anyone to get their job done. Unfortunately, not everyone agrees with me on this one, hence the fact that people in these jobs are still slaving away in the 9-5. But don’t give up just yet!

If you can’t work from home 5 days a week, there’s still a way for you to work from home at least one day a week.

Step 1: Assess your job functions.

The first step for 9-5 freedom is to take a look at your daily tasks and see if they can be performed remotely. Can you answer those e-mails, delegate tasks, and edit content from home? Or do you attend a crap load of unnecessary meetings and dish out paperwork left and right?

Regardless if your answer is yes to all of the above, there are still ways to work from home. You can start by making a list of the said functions, then figuring out how you can do business as usual from home without affecting your work. I’m seeing Facetime in your future… You can then use this “list” to make a proposal to your boss.

office space to work from home

Step 2: Highlight how efficient you’d be at home.

When you go to pop the question to your boss (hehe), make sure the proof is in the pudding! You must have evidence showing how you can be more productive at home. You can do this by saying there’s less distraction, a larger work space, and no commute time. You can also make the case that “work-life balance” will make you more productive and engaged back at the cube.

With less distraction you’re able to focus more. A larger work space means more room to be creative. And with no commute time, you can get to work right when you wake up or work through the night if need be.

You should also use real examples of when you had to work from home, like a snow or sick day, and you closed X amount of deals.

Companies want to hear how they can benefit from a new idea so be sure to share how working from home one day a week will be an advantage to them not you.

Step 3: Suggest a trial run.

If you’re feeling uncertain vibes from your boss, you can suggest a trial run for a month or so. This keeps your boss in control and gives you time to prove you deserve that one day a week!

Consider your trial run baby steps in the right direction for autonomy. This is a crucial time for you to really show that you’re a wo/man of your word. When you meet with your boss after the trial, bring stats showing how much more you were able to accomplish working from home.

Do you work from home? If so, how were you able to do it? Sound off in the comments below!

Adding Oomph to Stubborn Flat Hair

Hair is not my forte at all!

As a matter of fact, I hate my hair so much I hardly bother with it, let alone brush it… It was always a life-long dream to achieve bouncy, super touchable lush locks. That explains why I was often on the hunt for adding oomph to stubborn flat hair. And as a result, I’ve learned a handy thing or two so I thought my flat-haired companions might appreciate this post.

To start, take the time to understand your hair. I have have flat, slick straight, heavy Asian hair except I don’t have much of it. You’d think because I don’t have much hair, it’d be easy to get volume, but nope, that’s how annoyingly stubborn it is. I’m notorious for being impatient to the point where I was just putting anything labeled “volumizing” in my hair at first, which was probably one of the dumbest, most wasteful things I ever did. I learned quickly that overloading product in your hair ultimately weighs it down and makes it feel quite crunchy (not sexy) so try the below instead.

Shampooing

I shampoo my hair everyday… I’m not telling you to do this, but if I don’t, my hair gets pretty greasy, which only weighs it down more. So if you know you have a big day coming up and you want really want to amp up the volume, double cleanse the night before…by that, I mean shampoo twice and no conditioner. This really strips away the oil and leaves you with squeaky clean strands (that also means your hair might feel pretty dry).

The Blow Dry

After you get out the shower, spritz your hair all over, focusing on the roots, with a root booster + heat protectant spray. I’m currently using Eva NYC Up All Night Volumizing Spray, which does a pretty good job. I was a devoted user of the Sally Hershberger Supreme Root Lift, but it’s become quite the pain in the ass to get a hold of – that would be my first choice. Half-way through blowdrying, take a texturizing spray, like L’Anza Beach Spray and blast it all over your hair. This stuff is pretty amazing for adding grit and creating piecey, undone tresses. I discovered it last summer and now have a 3 bottles just in case… Anyway, finish blowdrying, but use the cold air setting the last 20 seconds.

Finishing Touches

Once your hair is dry, tease the shit out of it in sections using Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray. I admit, I was highly skeptical of the magnified Oribe – at $44 a pop, it was a risky buy. And when I first attempted to use it, the nozzle was so hard to press down, I had to do use two hands! But now that I’ve broken it in a little, I absolutely love it! Oribe is heavy in texture and latches on to the hair well – so well that the volume is surprisingly long lasting. This product married with the L’Anza Beach Spray is MONEY! In the photo above, I’m only using these three products – I added some waves with a flat iron.

Final Oomph Factor

If you’re not happy there or have an extra 5 minutes, take a crimper and crimp the top sections underneath the outer layer of your hair. I’ve had my beat-down Conair crimper for over 15 years – no lie and I’ve been using this method for over 12 years now. On a good day, I’m often asked how I get so much volume…well that’s it –

the real secret to adding oomph to stubborn flat hair.

Notice how the bottom right picture looks much fuller than the top?

Can Successful Bloggers Create Successful Bloggers?

This is how most normal trades work, right?

There’s a mentor-mentee relationshop. A teacher and a pupil. A Jedi Master and a young Padawan…but does the same thing work for bloggers? If the most important thing about a blog is its individuality and voice, can you learn from others?

If you’re reading this post, then my guess is that you’ve already heard about H&M’s team-up with Man Repeller to offer five bloggers mentoring sessions with Leandra Medine. Bloglovin’ is on board and continuing its new award at the annual Bloglovin’ Awards during New York Fashion Week: Breakthrough Fashion Blogger of the Year.

It’s a big deal. For the past couple of years, people have been talking (and panicking) about the blogosphere being “oversaturated” and that other platforms like Instagram and Snapchat are the new frontiers for fashion media. Traffic to home pages is low and YouTubers are the new power players. Zanita wrote a fantastic post last week that myth-busts a lot of the hyperbolic banter being thrown around at the moment, but the basic premise is correct:

Fashion blogging is big now, and in a big pond, how do you grow to be one of the big fish?

I happen to think blogging is just like most things in life – that the smartest people learn from the successes (and mistakes) of others. So yes, successful bloggers can create successful bloggers! Getting yourself amongst people who know way more than you do always forces you to grow. Ask a ton of questions. Heck, even just be a fly on the wall in the right room! These basics have been true in my first waitressing jobs, in my past career as a lawyer, and now I learn this lesson as a writer, from other writers, every single day of my life.

successful bloggers manrepeller
Zanita Studio has so much fantastic advice for bloggers. Zanita herself is obviously the mastermind that makes this site go KA-BLAM, but blogging is also about running your own small business. It’s about being entrepreneurial and knowing how to be your own boss. It’s about being fit (both mentally and physically), and knowing how to document your life in a professional yet personal way. All you need to bring is your own message, and the rest is a toolkit you can learn.

I happen to think the success of Zanita Studio is because you know that these lessons can be taught, and that you’re reaching out to educate yourself. That you want to listen to this community and be a part of the way it’s growing and changing.

Someone once told me that in the fashion industry they “eat their own young”. That established players *cough cough, traditional media* just churn and burn free interns, and that people higher up will try to crush any threatening new talent. I think that fashion bloggers are a part of the fashion world but they don’t buy into such a narrow view of the industry. The more blogging grows, the more people look to blogs for content, and that fuels demand, which in turn gives more bloggers an audience and money for their work. Just because the landscape is shifting and moving forward doesn’t mean this basic, democratic premise has changed.

Big, successful blogs like Man Repeller and Zanita Studio are virtual communities.

We write for our readers, knowing that you have aspirations and struggles like we do, and that as we grow and improve, you do as well, and that we’re all moving through this exhilarating shifting media landscape together. There’s never been a more exciting time to be in media, and you can learn the ropes before you make them your own.

I’m definitely biased, but that’s probably just because I know how awesome this team is, and I’ve seen how generous they are with their time and expertise. If you wanna be a top blogger you’re in the right place. I’m stoked to called Zanita my Jedi Master (even though she probably thinks that’s weird).

And now, we have an EVEN BIGGER surprise, giving you the opportunity to learn from your favorite influencers from around the world: Azalle. We’ve been working on this for so long and it’s now at the tip of your fingers! Watch this space!

The Ultimate Breakfast: Crumpets

syrup-pour-crumpetsprep-crumpets

Either you’re a crumpet or pancake person. I’m a crumpet person.

Believe it or not, I can actually still remember the first time I ever made crumpets. It was quite a while back, maybe when I was about 10 years old? In fact, it wasn’t even in this country – South Africa. It was in China, of all places to learn to make crumpets. I had family who lived there for a while. We were lucky enough to visit them three times in Beijing. Those were actually the only times I travelled across the borders of my country. I thought that China was an absolutely beautiful country filled with diverse culture and amazing people. I loved how different it was to anything that I knew before it. Anyway, my cousins went to an international school, which was also amazing, and one in particular attended after-school cooking classes. (I wish they offered that here!) So when we were there, I had the privilege of attending one of her classes. That day we made – you guessed it: crumpets or flapjacks. When the teacher said, “Today we will be making crumpets”, I had no idea what she was talking about but then soon realised that they are the same thing as your normal flapjacks. Notice how much more sophisticated crumpet sounds?

My mom loves crumpets too and so I made them for her. She is such an incredibly inspirational person and far more than just my mom. Without being cheesy or anything, thank you mom for being yourself and for working so hard for all of us. Here is a small token of my appreciation to you (this is what the more privileged people at my school say to other important guests who visit our school: here is just a small token of our appreciation to you…it seriously annoys me)…

a stack of crumpets.

These little guys can be whipped up in 10 minutes flat! They are super easy to make and the results are delightful! This recipe makes light, crisp crumpets, which are perfect with fresh fruit, syrup, and butter.

how to make crumpets

Delectable Crumpets

Makes about 20 small crumpets

Ingredients:

  • 500g plain flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 5 tbs castor sugar
  • 2 tbs vegetable oil
  • 4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/3 tsp salt
  • 450ml full fat milk

Method:

Place all of your ingredients into a bowl and mix until a thick batter forms.

Melt a little butter with a drop of oil in a large frying pan over a medium to low heat.

Drop spoonfuls of the batter into the frying pan. Once bubbles start to form around the sides of the crumpets, they are ready to flip. This usually takes about 2 minutes. Leave to cook on the other side for a further 2 minutes.

Continue the process until all of the batter is gone.

Serve warm with fresh fruit, butter and syrup.

5 Reasons Why Your College Degree Doesn’t Matter

$
0
0

If college degrees guaranteed jobs, everyone would be employed, but these days, knowledge and skills trump degrees!

While this isn’t the case if you want to be a doctor, engineer, accountant, or something of that nature, it’s also NEVER too late to jump ships if that’s where you ended up, but can’t stand it. Remember, it’s more important to build a career you’re proud of than getting a college degree that doesn’t matter – no need to flex your smart muscles… Here’s why:

#1 You probably don’t know what you want to do anyway.

Who’s making all the right life decisions at 22 years old? If you know, then bravo – get to it, and if you don’t know, don’t worry about it. Focus on learning and touching as many things as you can and in another 5 years, you might find that you want to do something else.

#2 Your soft skills are equally as important as your educational background.

Soft skills are those that allow you to work well with others – that means thinking, communicating, and reacting well under all situations. What good does it do employers if you’re smart as hell, but unteachable and unadaptable?

your college degree doesn't matter#3 Experience trumps education (most often).

The best way to get into the career of your dreams is to focus on the skills and experience necessary. This is all accessible today through online courses, short training programs, interning and/or freelancing, or starting a side hustle. Don’t forget, skills lead to experience.

#4 Never underestimate your network.

People more often than not will be your guiding path to a career you’re proud of. If no one knows who you are, no one knows how talented you are and that just about applies to everything in life.

#5 Education doesn’t stop after college.

If you think going to college is a one-stop shop, you’re in for a surprise! Knowledge should be a life-long pursuit otherwise you’d be the same stagnant person forever *yawns*. Strive to constantly learn something be it a hobby or something as simple as writing a check… As a matter of fact, you’re constantly schooled by life itself, pay attention to the lessons!

We’ve got a few model examples right here at The Studio:

  • Zanita: Model/fashion blogger to Creative Director and Fashion Photographer
  • Gustav: Business & IT degree to CEO
  • Susan: International Business & Japanese degree to Editor
  • Brittany: Education degree to Social Media Marketer and Freelance Writer
  • Bri: Law degree to Freelance Writer
  • Nicole: Journalism/Comms degree to Graphic Designer

In a generation of the self-made, it’s clear you have much control over how your future unfolds. Your college degree doesn’t matter – it doesn’t define you and you’re never confined to its boundaries. Ready for what’s next?

The 5 Best Autobiographies to Read if You Want to Work in Fashion

$

0

I recently wrote a post about whether or not successful bloggers can create other successful bloggers (the answer is yes, duh), and it got me thinking about other ways we can learn about the fashion industry – specifically from other women who have walked this path before us. I consider the books below the best autobiographies because they have been written over several decades. If you read them all, you’ll be able to see really interesting developments through the fashion industry over time. (Also – a difference in how these incredible women pushed boundaries in their generations!)

I also picked them because I totally tore through each and every one of them – they’re great reads that also teach you about this crazy world we work (and live) in.

The Vogue Factor

Kirstie Clements was the editor at Vogue Australia for 13 years. You might not have heard much about her or about this book if you’re not an Aussie, but Kirstie has an undeniable wealth of knowledge (and gossip) that she is all-too-happy to share in this timeless memoir.

My favourite thing about it? She started as the receptionist.

Honestly. If you want to read a book that inspires you to work your way up the ladder to your ultimate dream job, this is it. Kirstie made me believe that the only thing between me and my aspirations was hard work. I leapt out of bed for weeks after finishing this book.

the best autobiographies for fashion#GIRLBOSS

Sophia Amoruso is incredibly fresh. She’s different from all the other women on this list because she started her business from nothing at a time when her business model didn’t even exist yet. She was quick and adaptive with social media and tech at really critical moments, and carved a career for herself from the outside of the traditional fashion industry structures. This book is also wonderfully split into chapters that teach you life lessons whilst you follow Sophia’s own journey.

It makes you feel like you’re having a cocktail with your fabulous BFF – what more could you want?

D.V.

I have to say – not only should you read this book, but you also must watch the documentary about Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel. They go hand-in-hand.

Let me also put this clearly: Diana is one kick-ass lady boss.

This book is so delightful and it’s full of totally quotable witticisms. The other women on this list have written their autobiographies to sound genuine and real, but I think Diana has written hers to be particularly entertaining. She has a truly unique view of the world, too. Her lessons on how history, art, and humanities overlap with fashion are incredibly valuable to anyone starting out. It helped remind me of why I fell in love with fashion in the first place and that element of perspective is so important to hold on to when work gets tough.

Grace

best autobiographies if you want to work in fashion
Do I really need to sell this one? It’s Grace Coddington. The. Grace.

The most important lesson Grace taught me is that you can totally love your work and be absolutely dedicated to it, and that is cool. You can be enthusiastic! You’re allowed to get excited and sweat for a creative vision you believe in! So much of the fashion industry is people pretending not to care. So many young people and social media celebrities work for that “effortless” look in both their personal style and their career. They want you to think they’re too cool.

Well, Grace has a lesson for all of us: being successful and loving what you do is the ultimate “cool”.

Vivienne Westwood

I had to put Vivienne’s book in here because it has that same awesome perspective as D.V.

She’s a literal grandmother now, but this huge book also positions her as the grandmother of punk, the matriarch of fashion activism, and the heroine we all want to be.

She’s so gutsy, and this book doesn’t hold back from sharing the rougher, tougher parts of her life. They run alongside the glossy stuff and are important reminders for us newbies not to lose sight of the bigger picture. We can contribute to this industry in rebellious ways by rejecting fast fashion and sexism, you know? Vivienne has done it all and has been successful across multiple decades. She’s a woman we can all learn from.

What do you think?? Have I missed your favourite? Do you love or loathe these? You know me – always looking for the next great read!!

An Introduction to Anti-Aging Skincare

$
0
0

I was a huge tomboy growing up (can you tell?) and could care less about my skin up until I was 21 when I began to notice “freckles“… One day, I finally asked my sister, “Why am I getting these annoying spots?!” to which she responded, “It’s called sun damage…“!

That was my WTF moment and my entire life changed.

Though I admit much damage had already been done and I felt it was too late to get into the game, there’s no excuse to NOT start caring for your skin. I’ve played and dabbled with ingredients for the last several years, but have never found anything to be more powerful, more effective than those I speak of below. So if you’re new to this whole anti-aging skincare thing or looking to get your hands (face) wet, I’d recommend looking for these first:

– Retinol

This is probably one of my favorite skincare ingredients that’s proven to deliver top notch results. It helps smooth out wrinkles, unclog pores, even out your skin tone and improve its texture.

My Pick: Peter Thomas Roth Retinol Fusion PM

anti-aging skincare tipsanti-aging skincare serums

– Peptides

Peptides are amino acids that make up the proteins in the skin. They signal your skin cells to reproduce collagen, which is what helps it stay firm and supple. The more firm and supple your skin is, the more likely it is to fight off wrinkles. I discovered this ingredient through my Korean skincare binge at Peach & Lily – they have an impressive team of experts to help you customize a regimen.

My Pick: Mizon Peptide 500

– Ceramides

Ceramide-based products help replenish the skin’s ceramide content (which is described as the ‘glue’ that holds skin cells together). It helps maintain your skin’s appearance by retaining moisture and hydration, which is key in any anti-aging skincare regimen.

My Pick: Dr. Jart+ Ceramidin Liquidanti-aging skincare routine

– SPF

The sun is one of the fastest aging factors on this planet and often the culprit for wrinkles and age spots (hello, I’m a victim!). I’ve never basked in the sun purposefully, but I used to play outside for hours and never wear sunscreen (big mistake). My favorite sun care ingredients are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide – they’re physical protectants that sit on top of the skin to form a barrier against the sun’s rays. That’s not to say I’m opposed to avobenzone. You should apply it at least 15 minutes before stepping outside and again as needed, though I’m often guilty of only applying it once.

My Pick: Shiseido Urban Environment UV Protector, Supergoop Everyday Sunscreen, Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer

As with anything in the beauty universe, no one ingredient or product can cure all.

The key is to experiment and personalize a regimen that’s effective for you. It’s taken me several years, but I haven’t felt more comfortable in my skin until after I introduced all these products. Also, NEVER forget to drink lots of water and load up on antioxidants. You can get an in-depth look at my current skincare routine here.

The Satin Moment: It’s Back Baby!

2016 satin trend

Satin has been steadily creeping back into our fashion subconscious.

As we saw cemented all over the Australia Fashion Week scene, it seems to be the fabric of choice from bomber jackets and anything PJ-inspired to scarves and chokers – you name it and it comes in satin.

The high-gloss material yields a provoking textural element while imposing a luxurious feel to street wear – no wonder it’s become a go-to for celebs and street style stars alike. At the end of the day, your body can breathe and it feels just right for the weather.

We saw so many iterations across the runway from Dion Lee’s exquisite gowns to the free-flowing ruffles at Bianca Spender and the feminine details at Bec & Bridge – we’re on a major satin high.

So silky, so soft and supple – the stuff’s just too good to sleep in these days.

5 Tips to Get You Through Fashion Week

$

FUN. FAST PACED. TIRING. MOTIVATING. INSPIRING. CREATIVE. PUMPING.

Last Week was Australia Fashion Week and the words above are exactly how I’d describe it. It was FULL-ON, literally nonstop all week and yes, I was exhausted, but being around so many amazing and creative people inject you with boundless energy (a few sneaky cappuccinos go a long way too). These two in hand got me through a jam-packed week.

I filmed the whole experience while attending shows – you can watch the mini clips HERE. I will also be posting a video diary soon, so stay tuned! Although fashion week as an IG scanner or blog reader often looks like fun and games, it’s actually really overwhelming and crazily fast-paced. Not just anyone can get through the frenzy without proper planning.

So from experience, I’m sharing my best tips to get you through fashion week.

Be Organised

Organise each day to the T on your calendar. You will need to know precisely when you have breaks to eat and refuel. Find out how long it’s going to take to get from one show to the next and take traffic into consideration. Make sure you are on top of:

  • Charging your camera
  • Ensuring your camera cards are clear
  • Eating breakfast and drinking coffee – you might not know when your next meal is 😛
  • Taking a portable charger for your phone

tips to get you through fashion week

Multitasking is Key

If you’re not on top of multitasking, it will be struggle central. Photos, Videos, Snapchat. Repeat. There is so much going on in the week and the last thing you want to do is miss an opportunity or forget something. You need to be on top of everything and wear a lot of different hats at the same time so keep your eyes and mind open!

Be Flexible tips to get you through fashion week

Remember things change – this is fashion and the industry is notorious for changing. Shows run late (most of the time), understand that traffic is an issue, and sometimes things fall through the cracks. Don’t stress, these things happen – just get on to the next thing, otherwise you’ll be in panic, angry mode the rest of the day.

Me-time

Yes, even at fashion week. It’s something that’s hard to fit into your schedule at a time like this, but it’s so necessary. That might be some exercise, a self-prepped dinner, a bit of reading, or coffee with no electronics.  This will help you get some ZEN in a week of GO GO GO!

Plan Your Outfits

Have your outfits sorted for the week with a few back-ups and different combinations prepared. You never know what’s going to happen. Also, have multiple shoe options just in case your heels give you hell (which of course they will). Flats will be your ultimate relief!

These tips were written specifically from my fashion week experience, but can certainly be applied to any hectic week!

What Would Our First Female Bond Wear?

$

Bond, Jane Bond.

I just typed: “Gillian Anderson” into Google and it auto-filled the third word: “Bond”. That’s a pretty big deal for a woman with a truckload of other things to be famous for (how is X-Files not the third word!?), but I guess that’s how much hype this whole female Bond thing is getting.

gillian anderson next female bondTo fill you in – Gillian has a Tumblr, where she sometimes answers her fans’ questions, and one question was: “What’s the best rumor you’ve ever heard about yourself?” To which she answered: “That I might be the next Bond.”

Cue: complete internet meltdown.

Another name being thrown around is Idris Elba. Basically, it seems like people are a little tired of the never-ending stream of straight white dudes. But that’s not even what I want to talk about!

What I want to talk about is this feeling I get every time I come out of a Bond film where I’m like: “Damn, that was classy and kickass.”

I don’t want to be the “Bond girl”, I want to be the Bond. What would I wear? How do I speak? How do I stay that fit in order to kick that much bad-guy-butt? What do I smell like???

So, I’ve put together a little mental collage of what I think Jane Bond might be like.

Jane Bond wears:

Tom Ford has been responsible for the recent image of Daniel Craig as James Bond, and I think it’s great, but I don’t think Ford’s womenswear is the best we can do. You know what I’m thinking when I think about how strong, yet elegant Jane Bond needs to be? I’m thinking Celine. I’m thinking The Row. I’m thinking about some of Ellery’s more subtle cuts. They’re all strong and feminine and practical and stylish. Tom Ford can still do the eyewear though – man oh man does Tom know his way around frames!

Daniel as Bond also wears Rag & Bone jeans! I’m betting Gillian would be down with that. I’m down with that.

The only thing I can’t decide on yet is if she wears heels with her suits. I mean, it’s tricky, because Bond almost always ends up fighting the bad guy while looking killer in a suit, but it’s not exactly practical. What do you think? The girls in Charlie’s Angels managed to save the day in stilettos…

Jane Bond drives:

I don’t know anything about cars. Sure, whatever, an Aston Martin will be fine.

Jane Bond works out:

Every day. Hardcore body-to-body combat skills. Kickboxing! She’s strong. She’s fast. She does yoga to unwind and totally nails the headstands. She probably did ballet when she was younger and now she’ll have good posture for life. Bam bam bam.

Jane Bond smells like:

I know this is a leap, but every time I smell Armani’s Si fragrance it makes me feel like a classier version of myself. It helps that Cate Blanchett looks incredibly chic and strong in all the ads for it. Giorgio says: “Si is my tribute to modern femininity, an irresistible combination of grace, strength and independent spirit.” Sounds pretty fitting for the first female Bond, right?

 Jane Bond drinks:

A martini, shaken not stirred, duh, but she also gets to make her own slightly different recipe and name it after the first man (or woman) who broke her heart. I.e. The Vespa… And also, of course, the Dom Perignon that appears in most of the books.

Do you agree with my choices? Have I missed anything?

Anti-Aging With the NuFace Trinity Facial Toning Device

$

0

I’m starting to take my anti-aging game a little more seriously as you can tell from my previous post.

I’ve been a skincare minimalist for years so although I was aware of these technologies, e.g. light therapy and micro-current facials, I didn’t know much beyond that. It only make sense as I head north into my 30s that I educate myself in this space and that’s how the NuFACE Trinity Facial Toning device came into the picture.

So…if you don’t know, micro-current technology uses a low level of electrical current to mimic your body’s natural current, driving the production of collagen and elastin. This ultimately improves your facial contour, tone, and reduces fine lines and wrinkles.

The NuFace Trinity comes with the following:

– The toning device
– Facial toner attachment (this is interchangeable)
– A charging cradle and power adaptor
– Gel primer

The standard attachment is used for larger areas of your face, like your cheeks, jaw line, and forehead, but I also have the Eye & Lip Enhancer attachment, which targets hard-to-reach spots like your eyes and lips obviously – think crow’s feet and smile lines. It claims to wane 3 of the biggest aging concerns mentioned above: facial contour, wrinkles, and skin tone.

nuface trinity facial toning device reviewuse the nuface trinity

Here’s the verdict…

So what you do is cleanse your face as usual, then apply the gel primer to your face in sections at a time. As you apply the primer, work the device outwards from the center of your face. The direction card does a much better job explaining this. Upon initial use of the Trinity, I was like “uhh I don’t feel anything” and then realized, DUH – you’re not supposed to (silly me). The device is super gentle – there’s zero discomfort when gliding the nobs over your face.

It’s been a little over two weeks since I’ve been on the NuFace Trinity and I can’t say too much about wrinkle aspect because I frankly don’t have much wrinkles at this point in my life. However, the toning is where I’ve noticed a difference… It seems helpful and effective in preparing the skin for deeper penetration from succeeding skincare products (which you’d just apply as usual after wiping the gel primer off). Overall, my face feels smoother and brighter.

nuface trinity gel primer

My only quibble is that it’s a tiny bit of a time commitment – a whopping 5 minutes (recommended) 5 days a week for 60 days, and then 5 minutes a 2-3 times a week thereafter… I have a problem with time here – I don’t have enough of it. Introducing essence along with two more serums, plus facial masks a few times a week was already major strides for me. This little gadget commands another 5 minutes, but hell, we’re all about prevention right?

If it’ll serve me in the long run, I’ll do the work now and you should too! Approved!

What Does It Mean? White After Memorial Day

It’s time to address some big questions…

“What’s this whole ‘You can only wear white after Memorial Day’ malarkey mean – and do we even care?”

Frankly, I’m quite sure the answer comes from some obscure American fash-history reference in the 1940s, but no, not really.

That doesn’t mean I haven’t used the reference to spend the last two hours seeking out my favourite white fashion pieces in avoidance of working on some editing that I’ll likely have to do later on the plane… though don’t feel sorry for me, I’m flying to Tokyo! Stay tuned for some super kawaii instaspam.

Either way I’m pretty excited about the warmer weather – it’s better to suited for wearing the lightest of hues, though technically speaking, is white even a colour? Looking forward to feeling fresh and putting coffee stains all over the season’s bright white and fabulous pieces!!

5 Kinds of Tea to Give Your Health a Boost

$

Tea is kind of underrated…

I mean, no one wants to see a beautiful warm cup of tea on Instagram like they do cappuccinos and acai bowls, do they? But did you know that tea is the second most widely-consumed beverage in the world, only second to water – bet you thought it was coffee, right?

I love tea and don’t drink coffee at all, unless it comes with a cone – in other words, ice cream. Aside from that, every single morning, I heat up some water and browse through my personal selection, depending on the mood and the goal of the day.

There are only three main kinds of tea: green, black, and oolong with a lot of variations in the mix. Each one has its own purpose and benefits, but the sole ritual of drinking a warm cup of tea is in itself – relaxing. Let’s go through my favorite variations for a health boost.

Green Tea…

is my absolute favorite and said to be the one with the highest level of powerful antioxidants – the amazing little things that fight off the damaging free radicals in our bodies. It’s also famously known for its upward effects on bad cholesterol, boosting metabolism, and burning fat. All of which, of course, come along with a balanced diet and regular exercise.

kinds of tea
There’s also the trending tea of the moment: matcha tea, which I’ve never actually tried it until a few days ago in a pear smoothie. Matcha is a powder that contains the nutritional and benefit equivalent of ten cups of regular green tea and can be consumed in more ways than one. A simple Google search shows us that matcha can easily be incorporated into smoothies, muffins, puddings, and even guacamole.

Chamomile tea…

is another favorite, especially if I’m having a stressful day or week. It has great and natural soothing effects, which helps you sleep better and boosts your immune system.

There’s also rooibos tea, which is quite popular in Japan, Germany, Holland, and England. It’s known for being low in tannins (that means you can actually enjoy it), easing digestive problems, and being rich in vitamin C. Another hidden fact: Women in Japan drink this for its positive effect on the skin and hair. That’s all we need to hear right? #FTW

Peppermint tea…

can be made with the actual plant – it’s as easy as pouring hot water over a few leaves. It helps with digestion, eliminates inflammation, and is your cure for bad breath (no wonder it’s in everything from our mouthwash to gum).

The best thing about tea isn’t just the amazing benefits, but it counts as water intake – a life essential we can all use more of. So instead of drinking 8 cups of plain water or downing 3 cups of coffee, try sneaking in a few cups of tea…starting now.

The Most Comforting Celery and Bean Soup

celery & bean tomato soup

A few weekends ago, I treated myself to a new cookbook.

My collection at home is pretty small compared to my mom’s and is predominantly made up of baking books, so I definitely deserved a new one. Anyways, I spent about twenty minutes in the bookstore making sure I had chosen the best one at the best possible price. I am extremely fussy when it comes to everything outside of eating. If something doesn’t fit the criteria I’m looking for, I’ll say good-bye. It has to have a certain rustic, wholesome feel and the paper must be matte. Anything else is out of the question. I don’t do glossy paper – it just drives me insane. I eventually found Moro East. My mom has the first one in the series so I immediately knew it was perfect. The photos are super natural, the paper matte, and the price unbeatable. Even better – the recipes are superb. Often when you buy a cookbook, you love everything embedded in the pages, but never really come around to cooking any of it – maybe it’s the confusing instructions or the ingredients are hard to find. I knew that this would not be the case with Moro East. It’s filled with simple recipes using accessible and substitutable ingredients, and the directions are completely modifiable. This is my kind of cooking and that’s exactly what I did with this celery and bean soup.

This recipe, adapted from Moro East, is a warm soup filled with textures and flavours of all kinds. The broth is tomato-based filled with celery, butter beans, and sweet cooked onions. It’s seasoned with fennel seeds, which complement the sweetness of the onions and the earthy flavour of the celery – best served with a squeeze of lemon and some good crispy bread.

Celery and bean soup

Hearty Tomato, Celery and Bean Soup

Serves 4 people

Ingredients:

  • 10 tbs olive oil
  • 1 large red onion, roughly chopped
  • 1 large head of celery with leaves, roughly chopped
  • 1 tsp seas salt
  • 4 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1 tsp crushed fennel seeds
  • 500g chopped canned tomatoes
  • 250g canned butter beans, drained and rinsed
  • 400ml vegetable or chicken stock

Method:

Place a large saucepan over a medium heat and add 6 tbs of olive oil. Once hot, add the chopped onions, celery, and sea salt. Cook for 10 minutes until soft, stirring occasionally so that it doesn’t burn.

Next, add the garlic, fennel seeds, and chopped tomatoes. Mix together. Then add the remaining ingredients to the pan and stir to combine. Bring to a gentle bubble and leave to cook for another 10 minutes covered with a lid.

After 10 minutes, taste the soup and adjust seasoning if needed. Pour the remaining 4 tablespoons of olive oil over the soup and serve with lemon wedges and crispy bread.
