Top Foodstagrammers You Need To Follow!

A few weeks ago I was named one of InStyle Online’s Favourite Foodstagrammers!

I was so proud and extremely honoured to be recognized and appointed by such a large, well known magazine. This inspired me to cull together my own ‘Top Foodstagrammers‘ post. You might notice that my picks have pretty similar styles to me. I look at these Instagrammers as my inspiration, but most of the time just to see what other people with similar interests are doing with their time…

Here are my 5 Favourite Foodstagrammers:

nina-avo-toastnina-olsson-salad

 Nina Olsson of @nourishatelier

Nina’s photos are super beautiful and most of all, relatable. When I say this, I mean she styles her food in a way that doesn’t seem like she spent hours labouring over a plate. When you flip through her gallery, you get a sense of effortless, vegetarian beauty. She is definitely my greatest inspiration and also happens to be one of my Insta-friends.

renee-kemps-bagelrenee-kemps-cake

Miss Renee Kemps of @renneekemps

Miss Renee Kemps is just something else. She has such a particular minimalistic style that never gets boring. I could stare at her photos for hours, sulking in every simple and effortless detail. She won the coveted Best Food Photography award at last year’s Saveur Blog Awards. I wish she WAS my Insta-friend!

aran-flanaran-yoghurt-fruit

Aran Goyoaga of @canellevanille

This woman’s work is just too immaculate for words. She is definitely a trendsetter within the Foodstagram community and is always coming up with something completely unique and beautiful. Her photos are light, simple, and super approachable.

anne-chocolat-chocolateanne-chocolat-avo

Anne au Chocolat of @anneauchocolat

Each and every single one of Anne’s photos is breathtaking – so delicious, crisp, and clean. She has a sweet tooth and does a great job showing off her delectable sweet treats. She’s really good at playing with different textures from glossy glazed donuts to crispy waffles. P.S. She once liked one of my photos!!

sunday-suppers-settingsunday-suppers-bun

Karin Mordechai of @sundaysuppers

Karin is minimalism at its best. Here, you’ll see the most natural, but hypnotizing photos of all kinds of trendy foods. She owns a studio, based in Brooklyn, NYC (the dream), where she hosts gatherings for people to learn about local ingredients, food styling, or anything topical in the food community. She has such a good eye and each of her shots create such storms in the community.

Happy instagramming!

Time to Fight FOMO & Other Things Holding You Back From Success

$

Oh no, FOMO!

Every corner you turn in the name of social media, someone is on a lavish vacation, working from some cute cafe, or being “gifted” things the 9-5 girl can only dream about, so we pick and pry at ourselves to do better and work harder. (If you read my post about Arianna Huffington, you’ll know this is definitely not the answer!)

Thanks to Instagram, we are constantly bombarded with “thinspiration”, beach bungalows, and Kylie’s Lip Kits… there’s no escaping. It’s hard not to have FOMO (fear of missing out) and compare yourself to digital stars while vicariously living through them. Are these things holding you back from success? So what do you…

1. Stay in your lane.

Just keep swimming! Keep looking forward and going towards the gold regardless of what techniques other swimmers are using to try to beat you. If you’re going to be in competition with someone, let it be YOU.

When you stay in your own lane and continue to focus on what you’re doing and not what everyone else is doing, you’ll be a lot happier, more productive, and successful. You’ll be amazed by what opportunities arise and how much better your life gets.

fight things holding you back from successMany uber successful people don’t even check social media or follow what their competitors are doing because they’re so immersed in their own stuff. So often we get caught up in comparing ourselves to those around us, in our industry, at work, etc. that it’s really a buzz kill.

There are no winners in the comparison game.

2. Realize you’re not alone.

Every single person has compared him/herself to another at some point and felt left out, defeated, and useless. And guess what? However specific your situation is, there is someone out there who’s going through the exact same thing. You’re never alone and the world isn’t out to get you.

Everyone goes through rough patches, it’s just a matter of powering through to the other side. In fact, those who have succeeded at what they set out to do most likely experienced a series of awful events that led them there. And through their stories of triumph they’ve inspired thousands of people.

So, if you’re experiencing FOMO or other things holding you back from success, why not share your story and help someone else?

3. Focus on your strengths.

You can work on your weaknesses, but that does nothing for your strengths. So why not focus on what you know you’re good at?  Your strengths are going to allow you to hit a home run – use them to leverage yourself in a position for success.

Let your team compensate for your weaknesses while you kill it with your strengths.

4. Be grateful for what you DO have.

If you’re an avid social media checker like me, it takes about two celebrity Snapchat stories before you’re like #omg #squadgoals #majorFOMO… #FML. You forget about how great your life is because you’re so busy comparing it to someone else’s.

It sounds cliche but gratitude is the best attitude. A truly successful person isn’t posting on social media about how great life is because he/she is too busy living it and being grateful (Zanita is a big fan of this).

Another thing to keep in mind: while you’re comparing your life to someone else’s, someone else is comparing their life to yours.

There is someone in the world who would love nothing more than to switch places with you and the faster you realize that and become grateful for all that you have, the faster you’ll attract more of what you want.

Do you have FOMO? Tell me about your experience in the comments below.

xx Britt

Versace Equals Supermodels + Supermoms

$

0

It’s the latest from Versace and it’s Gigi and Karlie – of course we’re all buzzing about it. Donatella didn’t get where she is now by being predictable.

Versace’s latest campaign depicts a kind of vignette of a “regular day” in the life of a Chicago family who happens to be mega rich and mega hot. Gigi Hadid (who, I might remind you, is 21) walks along a windy street with her black partner and two kids. Karlie’s partner is a heavily tattooed business man and she’s got kids hanging off and around her too.

The images were shot by Bruce Weber although I’ve read everything I could find about the meaning behind the shoot, the most important thing you need to know is that Gigi would have had to be about 14 when she gave birth for those kids to be hers. Donatella came out defending people’s objections to the shoot. She says:

The combination [of images] perfectly illustrates the relevance and wearability of modern Versace for all parts of one’s life, from the ultra-glamourous to the everyday…

versace equals supermodels as supermoms
So here’s the thing: we send 14 and 15 year old girls down runways to sell clothes to grown women. A huge part of fashion is fantasy. The industry happens to be youth-obsessed and age-phobic so it makes sense that even when they want to sell the idea of “mummy” they pick a fetus. Jezebel wrote a funny monologue from the perspective of the baby in the pram about Gigi being “new mummy”.

The baby asks: Why does everyone ask if new mommy used to be our nanny? I laughed a lot.

What I’m more interested in is why, when, and how the idea of motherhood got fashionable. En vogue, so to speak.

Remember the Dolce & Gabbana runway show with babies in models’ arms and a pregnant woman on the runway? That was their Fall 2015 collection and everyone heralded it for successfully presenting a multi-faceted woman who can be both thin-limbed-praying-mantis and mother. The only reason I remember that moment is because the pregnant woman got the most boring, ugly dress from the whole – and otherwise stunning – collection. They could have taken the smock off the toddler and made it bigger and it would have looked more chic.

So why are we seeing this new angle? One element is that these days, there’s so much more diversity in fashion and modelling. I mean, hello, the Versace ads depict inter-racial couples and nobody is even really mentioning that! Ten (let alone twenty) years ago that would have been the headline.

Here’s what I think is fuelling this trend:

  • Blogging. Duh. Social media influencers have forced design houses to cater to a real target audience. The more honest and relatable a blogger (or especially a vlogger) is, the better connection they have with their readers. So what do “real” women do? In contrast to the late-teens-early-twenties dream audience that designers used to latch on to, they’re finally being forced to acknowledge that a bunch of women are actually mothers as well. It’s all part of the democratisation of fashion and it’s exciting.
  • Its celebrity culture. Think about the Beckhams and the Kardashian-Wests. These mothers and fathers have been on Vogue covers and their kids get to sit front row at huge fashion shows. We follow whole families on reality TV shows whereas children used to be “seen not heard”.
  • It’s commercial. Kids are the new extension of status. They grew in the same way and nature that luxe sportwear did. I remember the days when workout gear was just ugly and simple. So you’ve been working hard at the office and can finally afford that Versace jacket? Nice one. Now multiply that cost by four because these days your whole family has to be fashionable.

Well what’s the punchline here? Why is this important?

Because understanding the way fashion trends grow, move, and work is critical if you want to work in this business. The brands who latched onto the sportswear craze early enough are now miles ahead of the pack. “Supermodels as supermoms” isn’t the beginning of this new trend – it’s already well underway. Stay ahead of the curve.

My Tokyo Experience: Japan Video AND Photo Diary

After a damn long wait, I’ve finally got another chance at the Tokyo Experience.

I visited around 8/9 years ago, before I started my blog (was there ever such a time?!), and it’s been top of my list of places to return to, yet I haven’t been able to make it happen until now. My trip was pretty rushed – I was there to shoot for my friends at Away Luggage Company and our days were filled dashing between locations. I did get to see a whole load of the city though – and it’s only renewed my desire to visit yet again.

IMG_2763
Two cats on a street sign = chaos in Ginza.

Japan is the most captivating place I’ve ever had the good fortune of visiting. It’s got a certain je ne sais quoi – a magic that gives the impression of an alternative reality. Walking the streets of Shibuya, I found myself day dreaming, being part of a scene in some science fiction movie. The Japanese have a culture that I’ve only experienced being gracious and accommodating despite obvious language barriers. Despite being one of the most ethnically homogenous places on the planet, I never felt out of place or uncomfortable, the locals aren’t prone to staring…though they might ask for the occasional photograph! In stark contrast to the Big Apple itself, Tokyo is spotlessly clean – you can’t even find public rubbish bins – you’ve got to take home your trash yourself.

My Tokyo Video Diary – Watch Now!

There’s some pretty bizarre (to some) trends that have caught on in Tokyo. We visited a maid cafe – not as sinister as you might think…it was all about kawaii and politeness, and also a Cat Cafe, which my friend described as the Soho lounge, with cats. Unfortunately, you couldn’t order a glass of wine alongside your feline friend, but I’m totally down for the idea of having a pet for an hour. We ate some much great food and also some pretty strange things. Food tastes certainly run pretty polar from Western styles and I can’t say I became partial to all the fermented and dried fish and plants while I was there…

A highlight from the trip was visiting Golden Gai in Shinjuku, an area where over 200 bars are crammed in, each with the ability to accommodate around 4-8 people. I didn’t get any photos, it’s a little frowned upon…but stay tuned for some snaps in the Away campaign. I also loved visiting the Mori Tower in Roppongi, where there was the added bonus of a Sailor Moon Exhibition alongside the staggering views.  Finally, one of the most classic tourist destinations in Tokyo was the Tsukiji Fish Market – not to be missed whether you’re a sushi fan or not. Truly a feast for the senses… just like everywhere else in Tokyo!!

Really can’t wait to go back again to Tokyo and Japan properly. Thanks so much to Away for reviving my passion for this amazing country.

The Perfect Fashion Trick When You’re Uncertain About the Weather

You look out of the window and you don’t know what the day will bring – is it gonna be hot or cold…wet or dry?

Then, you find the perfect dress to wear, but not sure if bare legs are appropriate. If you’re ever in this predicament, I have the perfect fashion trick for those kinda days:

Dress + Trousers Combo

It sounds bizarre at first, but I’ve pulled together the perfect examples to get you inspired and all-around weather ready!

#1 Maxi Dress With A Sneak Peek of Jeans

Dress + Trousers

This look is in particular my favourite… I believe that the more layers the better when done right. And let’s be honest, she has done it so right, hasn’t she?

#2 Go Minimal

Dress + Trousers

Minimalism is always chic and effortless. You can’t really go wrong in this arena – pair your dress with a skinny jeans and you have an on-trend, fresh summer look. If you have masterful draping abilities, that’s even better!

#3 See-Thru Dress & Jeans

Dress + Trousers

This outfit works like magic… Sometimes I wonder how to wear see-thru dresses and it looks like jeans underneath is the genius answer. Would you agree?!

#4 Head-to-Toe White

Dress + Trousers

Nothing can be fresher than a total white look especially in the summer time. The combo of a dress and white trousers is perfection. So crisp!

#5 Choose the Casual Route

Dress + Trousers

Mixing a dress over cropped jeans and finishing it up with your favourite sneakers is a walk-in-the-park good.

4 Blog Hacks Every Blogger Should Use This Summer

$
0
0

It feels like summer is already in full swing here in NYC, which means more time outdoors and less time indoors working on your blog. Don’t panic! When you use your time efficiently, vacations, more family time, and outdoor activities won’t be a factor in your busy blog schedule. Yes, you can continue business as usual in the summer and I’m going to show you how with 4 blog hacks every blogger should use.

#1 Batching

Batching is my #1 blog hack because it is truly a game changer. Batching is when you bang out a bunch of tasks at one time. As a fashion blogger, this can be done by writing posts for the following week on the same day or even in the first few hours of a day. You can also batch your e-mail by checking it once a day as opposed to every so often throughout the day.

The benefit of batching is that it makes you more productive and it frees up the rest of your time for other things. When you bounce back and forth from one project or another you’re wasting time and you’re not giving either project your all. When you sit down and focus for a few hours on one task, the quality of your work will be better and you’ll finish faster than you would have otherwise.

I batch my meals, blog posts, picture editing, laundry, and e-mailing all at one time each week. You can spend 2 hours editing all your photos in one shot or 4 hours editing photos over the course of the week. What would you choose? I’ll take the first choice, please!

blog hacks to use this summer#2 Turning off your phone

Turning off your phone is easier said than done, I get it. When you finally do decide to unplug, you will be so laser focused on batching, you may get your tasks done faster than you thought because you won’t be distracted by social media. Turning off your phone can be treated like an intrinsic reward in the sense that you get to treat yourself at the end with social media. (Sad but true.)

Think how much more we could accomplish if we didn’t have Facebook videos, Snapchat stories, and Instagram memes to distract us.

#3 Automating

When I started writing this post I was gung-ho on automation. Now my thoughts have changed slightly only because I’ve noticed the blog front changing.

It is almost impossible to post on Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, and Twitter all at your highest engagement hour. People can’t expect fashion bloggers to be slaves to social media so automation comes in handy in that sense. Automation services like Hootsuite, Sprout Social, and MeetEdgar are productivity hacks that free up a lot of time.

At the same time, you don’t want to automate a generic post like “Sign up for my e-mail list and get blog tips straight to your inbox!”. Instead, automate something a little more personal and make sure you personally respond to as much feedback as possible. Nothing is more frustrating than supporting and engaging on a blogger’s social media feeds only to never have her/him respond back to you. The readers are the reason you’re where you are so the least you can do is give them a shoutout here and there.

#4 Working longer hours during the week

At the time, working after your full-time job is going to suck. The last thing anyone wants to do after a long day is to have it linger into the night. But if you want results and free time in the summer, you gotta do what you gotta do. In the winter, it’s not such a terrible thing to work on your blog on the weekends, but come summertime, you are ready to get out there and enjoy life… which you should!

The point is instead of making sacrifices, start utilizing blog hacks this summer that will help you work smarter and harder to get you the results you want.

What’s your #1 blog hack? Tell us in the comments below!

xx Brittany

Break Out of A Rut By The End of June

$

0

Great things never came from comfort zones…

Sometimes you don’t even realize you’re in a rut until you feel a sudden urge to change – maybe you’re bored, fed up with life’s routine, or feeling less than yourself. For the average person, one becomes less ambitious and less competitive with age. The good thing is, this discontentment means you’re not that average person… You’re ready. But what now and how? We have exactly what you need to break out of a rut before the end of this month.

– Say ‘yes’ to new opportunities.

“Insanity as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” – Albert Einstein

We’re not telling you to say ‘yes’ to spending an extra 10 hours a week at work, or ‘yes’ to adding to piling onto your already burdening work load. Instead, say ‘yes’ to an opportunity that makes you a little uncomfortable…to an activity you’ve never tried before – ‘yes’ to these things create momentum. You can’t expect change in your life by doing the same thing day in and day out.

break out of a rut– Fail at something.

“Failures, repeated failures, are finger posts on the road to achievement. One fails forward toward success.” – C.S. Lewis

Overcoming failure requires a bit of mind conditioning. Don’t let uncertainty or fear of failing deter you from taking action as it’s probably one reason you fell into this rut in the first place. Fail at something every day and you’ll becomes less afraid of it.

– Don’t think, feel.

“Don’t think. It complicates things. Just feel, and if it feels like home, then follow its path.” – R.M. Drake

Your intuition is powerful and whether or not you believe it, everyone has an internal wisdom so robust it sends cues through your body. Stop listening to everyone around you and start listening to yourself… Think about the many times you wished you trusted your gut and the consequences of not doing so.

– Make choices for your future now.

“When a habit emerges, the brain stops fully participating in decision making.” – Charles Duhigg

The choices you make today build the very foundation for your future so if you’re not taking any steps to plan and act on the potential immensity of it, you’ll never get there. The rut you’re feeling stuck in was probably the outcome of your decisions months and years ago.

– Talk to someone you admire or find successful.

“The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” – William Arthur Ward

We’re huge fans of mentors and professional networking because sometimes, one person is all you need to get the ball rolling…someone to inspire you and point you in the right direction…

– Stop waiting.

A young man without ambition is an old man waiting to be. – Steven Brust

There’s no such thing as the perfect moment. Forget your idea of saving up enough money or having enough time – it doesn’t exist. Make a decision, take action now, and figure out the rest along the way.

The Latest Beauty Trends You Haven’t Tried But Need To

$

Beauty trends, very much like fashion, recirculate itself every so often.

It’s easy to get stuck in old ways – Instagram eyebrows, clean cut eyeshadow and cheekbones, and winged eyeliner, but you should never be afraid to break the cycle and try something new. Lucky for us, there are always new tricks to try in the domain of beauty and today, I’m rounding up the latest beauty trends you should try by the end of summer.

Half-Up Bun

Hair up or hair down? Well, just like we talked about dress over pants to resolve your weather dilemmas, the half-up bun is the answer when you just don’t know what to do. It’s a much fresher take on the ubiquitous top knots we saw over the last several years. And it makes a perfect hair do if you lack the length to achieve a full-on pony tail.

latest beauty trendsNon-touring

Not exactly sure who comes up with these fancy names, but strobing and non-touring all essentially mean the same thing: Highlighting sans glaring contouring. Last year, we were inundated with strobing – intense highlighting – and there’s no questioning the robust influence highlighters have in today’s market. So simply put, non-touring is a toned-down version. I’m a fan because glossy skin without the walking disco ball look is my favorite kind of glow.

Lined Pouts

I haven’t seen the frequent use of lipliners much since the late 90s/early 00s, but it’s become quite the norm (perhaps, thanks to our Kardashian friends). Line your lips first and then fill them in – leave it just like that… It lasts longer and looks more natural too.

Lobs

Long hair is one thing that’s seasonless – it happens to be a part of our feminine identity, but going short is where most girls tend to shy away. Long bobs sprouted up in the last two years, but you can count this summer to be peak. I’m caving in myself and although I’m typically a fan of super layered, texturized hair, I’ll be working towards blunt ends with a bit of texture on top.

Blue Smokey Eye

Have you seen Allure’s latest cover with Elizabeth Olsen? Maybe blue/turquoise eyeshadow is an extension of the 70s/80s, but it looked so fresh. What a reminder to put away all those naked and nude palettes, and start playing with color again!

All Your Friends Are Getting Engaged!? Here’s How to Stay Cool

$
0
0

I’m about to turn 25 and I’ve just started seeing a serious domino effect.

Do you notice all your friends are getting engaged? The effect is like standing in the middle of a big ring of glamorous dominos, watching them tumble down all around, one after the other, with no chance of hitting me. As they tumble, my Facebook and Instagram feeds light up because all these carats of diamond rings are like disco balls and everyone is smiling so much I get blinded by their super-white teeth.

Huh? Oops, I didn’t realise the time! But really? Are we all already there?

friends are getting engagedIt’s not jealousy (I promise I’d admit if it was) and I’m overjoyed for my friends who are so in love that they’re ready to take this next step together. But there’s a cynicism holding me back. And it’s coupled with a really deep-seated fear of being left alone. I can’t be the only woman whose ever felt this way, but I’m still pretty surprised how I seem to care.

I don’t want marriage for myself (yet), but seeing everyone else jump on the bus has me panicked! So here’s what I’m doing:

1. They’re still my mates

I have to keep reminding myself that a wedding isn’t a one-way portal to another dimension. That feeling of fear was about being left behind – but not by my partner – by them. Take a deep breath. You work together or hit the gym together or you shop together or have shared interests. Don’t panic. Unless they win the lottery, they’ll be home after the honeymoon.

2. Enjoy the parties!

Here’s the deal: engagement parties and weddings offer free-flowing alcohol and delicious food. They are the best excuse to wear all the beautiful clothes hanging in your wardrobe that never see the light of day. And finally, just soak up the positivity in the moment. People are literally throwing these parties because they love each other so much. Humanity is beautiful. Let your hair down.

3. Get to work

And then put your hair back up. Haha.

There’s a proven and direct correlation between women being more educated and getting married later in life.

Don’t let your focus shift towards other people too much. You do you! For me, that means setting myself up to kick-ass in my profession every single day. My work defines who I am like some of these marriages define some of my friends. We each make choices and I’m happy with mine.

4. Every relationship is different

This may be the most important point of all. I have a boyfriend. We’ve been together almost 4 years now. We’re not getting engaged any time soon, and that was 100% fine with me until this whole domino thing started happening. Some days, I wake up with my man and I’m so happy and loved that I wish I could freeze time.

The thing is, nothing about our relationship changed, and I don’t want it to, I had just almost let a trend ruin my style.

I don’t want anything else and that means, for now, I don’t want to be engaged. And with a little reflection and a little time, I can be totally cool remaining the last standing domino.

I was so overeager to score my chance to preview Zimmermann Resort 2017 here in NYC that I accidentally turned up to my appointment a day early.

Embarrassing, yes, but you can blame a girl for being enthusiastic – especially when it comes to sneaking a peak at freshly minted Zimmermann Resort? The collection stood in a spacious, light-filled studio in Chelsea – the same location I visited back in February to shoot a look and spy the preparatory scene and chaos that was the Fall/Winter 15 show – though the pieces were quite a different journey to what we saw on the runways back then. Titled, The Winsome One, this resort collection is a dreamy and effortless getaway to Miami, Florida.

Zimmermann Resort 2017 collage

Screen Shot 2016-06-17 at 3.46.01 PMSo I gushed and strolled around the room, picking up the dresses and imagining myself on some fabulous tropical getaway. I pictured styling up the more feminine, delicate pieces with dramatic hard wear – maybe a chunky mirrored heel. That’s always my first instinct when I find something new. It broadens the idea of what my own personal styling is and can be. So today I’m more feminine than I was yesterday – more in love with pink hues and romantic nod’s to the fifties. That’s my fashion blogger hat! Evolving my personal style with each new influence I come across.

Next my brain shifts into creative gear – I wear my fashion photographer hat. I don’t usually travel around to showings with my DSLR, its just too delicate and heavy, so many lenses… it’s more a hindrance than a help. I really wish I brought it this time! Amazing light and gorgeous models to feature and don the garments… I promise myself I would find a concept to shoot the collection in a way that inspires me. Fill me a suitcase with ‘The Winsome One’, bring me a model, and let’s visit Cuba! Thankfully, I could bring you this little post – I brought along my little Canon G7X, which can shoot in RAW albeit a little grainy. Better than nothing.

Screen Shot 2016-06-17 at 4.03.49 PMThese days, I do, on occasion, wear my stylist hat. It’s not one that fits me well – sometimes it falls off. I can never wear my photographer hat well at the same time – too many things go missing or overlooked. Despite all that, I envision this collection with a ‘luxury meets casual’ vibe. Cotton shirts contrasted with the embellished details. Flat suede espadrilles and pretty glass water bottles. Wire rim sunglasses. Being a good stylist requires a certain level of organisation that isn’t really my speciality. I’m more of a ‘fly by the seat of my pants’ kind of girl. I’m getting better though! And it’s important for me to at least understand the role of a stylist.

Thanks so kindly to Nicky and the whole Zimmermann team for inviting me to preview The Winsome One and allowing my spontaneous little shoot. Always an honour.

Do This If You Want to Stand Out as a Blogger

WARNING: This is not your typical blog tips post – this is more, this is deep, and this is the cold hard truth that everyone is thinking but no one talks about.

If you want a play by play on how to strategically blog, this post is not for you. If you want to really stand out as a blogger, and you’re willing to put in the work, read on…

Don’t comment on Instagram

…unless it is a genuine and well-thought out comment. Most of you comment the sweetest, most in-depth thoughts on Zanita Studio. But we still get the occasional “Cute skirt babe!”, or “Great tips”.

Those comments are still lovely, and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. However, did you put as much thought into that type of comment as you put into one of your own blog or Instagram posts? Probably not. (Comment below if I’m wrong!)

The majority of the time bloggers comment on Instagram, it’s for their own benefit, not because they actually like what you’re doing/wearing. Trust me, I used to be one of those people until I decided I was going to stand out as a blogger and zag around everyone else.

stand out as a bloggerSolve a problem

Are you solving a problem when you blog or post on Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube? If not, no one cares. #sorryiaintsorry

Think about how often you go on YouTube to watch someone talk about their opinion on skinny jeans. Not very often, right? But how many times do you YouTube “how to curl your hair like a Kardashian”? Maybe it’s not that exact term but when you go on social media or visit someone’s blog, you are hoping they solve a problem for you.

Even those “pointless hauls” on YouTube solve a problem for you: what to buy for spring/summer/fall/winter.

We all have questions and we all want answers and the best way to stand out as a blogger is to answer as many of these questions as possible. Not everyone is going to come out and ask questions, so you have to do some research. (Yup… research. If it was easy, everyone would do it!)

Give more than you take

This is my favorite way to stand out as a blogger. I always talk about taking action and adding value to people’s lives, which is essentially giving, but what about giving away your time or money?

So many bloggers are obsessed, and I mean obsessed, with getting noticed and making money that they forget the true essence of abundance: you have to give to get.

With the recent events going on in the world, it’s time to stop being selfish and start being self-aware. Give away your time by volunteering in your community. Share a change.org petition on Facebook. Donate to The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust – there are around 450,000 wild elephants and only 7,500 Sumatran orangutans left in the world.

Don’t wait for someone else, don’t wait until it’s “cool”, start now! Make a difference.

Give more than you take and you’ll get back more than you ever imagined.

Every time I’ve donated money to an organization or tipped someone above average, I’ve gotten it back tenfold. I’ve either sold things on eBay that had been sitting for months, got a nice tax break, or someone has given me money for no reason. Giving works so it’d be silly not to do it.

What is one thing unique to you that makes you stand out as a blogger? What problem do you solve? Share in the comments.

xx Britt

A Guide to Buying the Best Cookbook

$
0
0

This might sound like silly post to make, but you’re probably guilty of owning cookbooks you haven’t opened since the day they were bought… Right?

That’s exactly why you need my help so let me guide you in buying the best cookbook!

My cookbook collection comprises of 33 books; out of those, I probably only use 8 of them regularly. The rest just sit quietly, looking pretty on my bookshelf and that probably sounds like a waste. Lucky for you, over the years, I have realised a few life transforming tips that can be useful in that bookstore. Read carefully and take notes!

simply-nigella-cookbooksrelatable-cookbooks

  1. What are your first impressions of the book?

When it comes to cookbooks, it’s perfectly normal to judge them by the cover. It tells you so much about it – like what kind of images to expect, or if it’s a well known author. Generally, if the cover includes a photo of the author, this means the author is famous or the book is more about the author than the food (possible sign of a fault for a real cookbook). If the cover displays a food image, the author may be less well known or the book truly focuses on food.

  1. Take a look at the back of the book

The back of the book typically features reviews or awards. This can tell you if the book is even worth opening at all.

  1. Do you like the style of the book?

Style in regards to the images, layout, typography, or type of paper used. This is a vital piece for me. The images have to be just right, the layout must be easy to read and understand, the typography must be legible and beautiful, and the paper matte. Anything else, and you’ve lost me.

  1. Are the recipes easy to follow?

Just like you would read the opening paragraph of a fictional book, flip to a recipe and see whether you can follow it. Most importantly, are the ingredients easily accessible or even better, do they exist in your pantry right now? If not, it’s highly unlikely you’ll just quickly pop down to the shops one evening because you want to quickly cook something from your new book. Also, think about the difficulty of the techniques and methods used and what your skill level is.

buying the best cookbook guide

This is an example of a recipe that I would never cook. Who has the time for so many steps and finicky presentation?

  1. Is it affordable?

The price tells a lot about a book, but you also don’t want to break the bank to buy one. Generally the more expensive the book, the more reputable the author – you can expect hard covers and supreme quality images. Before you fall in love with a book, make sure you can afford it. If you can’t, I suggest putting it down because once that book is in your head, you won’t stop thinking about it.

Does Taylor Swift listen to Taylor Swift when she’s going through a break-up?

$
0
0

It’s the tenth anniversary of Taylor’s first hit single and she’s just officially nabbed a mega-hot rebound hunk. How can I be that awesome?

TSwift_PhotoI love her. I love her latest album. I love how she refuses to be shamed for falling madly in love with ill-fitting, older men. I mostly love how she manages to take heartbreak (crippling for most of us mere mortals) and turn it into lucrative, chart-topping, booty-shaking tracks.

She once said to Parade in 2012: “I think every girl’s dream is to find a bad boy at the right time, when he wants to not be bad anymore.”

I mean, hello, she’s a damn genius! When you meet a hot new guy, you listen to Style. If it’s going well, you get all mushy and put on Love Story. Then he cheats so Trouble is on repeat. He calls you and you tell him you’re Never Ever Ever Ever Getting Back Together. She’s got a song for every moment you need.

But who has a song for her? What is Taylor Swift listening to right now?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’d know she just announced her break up from Calvin Harris, and that the tabloids just announced (via a classic grainy paparazzi image) that her beachside steamy rebound is Tom Hiddleston. Safe to say she’s probably not listening to Calvin with Tom hanging around. Does she even listen to music though? Or does she just make it? Does she sleep like a normal human being or is she actually a cyborg sent to this earth to remind me about my New Year’s Resolutions to work out more and take my makeup off before I go to bed?

TSwift_Photo_2The tabloids are shaming Taylor for moving on too quickly, and I know they’re doing that because it sells a few papers, but Taylor just bought another multi-million dollar house. Amber Rose says Taylor “doesn’t need time to let her vagina rest”, which is a hilarious way of commenting on all the unnecessary shade being thrown at a woman who’s having a steamy rebound that will almost certainly result in another fantastic hit song in a few months.

It’s easy to Shake It Off when you’re chilling out in your Rhode Island mansion, right? In that song she says: “I go on too many dates, but I can’t make ‘em stay. That’s what people say.” But whoever those “people” are, they’re missing the point.

When you’re climbing from Jake Gyllenhall over to Calvin Harris then up to Tom Hiddleston, who on earth would want them to stay.

At a concert in 2009 she said: “You grown up and realise that Prince Charming is not as easy to find as you thought. You realise the bad guy is not wearing a black cape and he’s not easy to spot. He’s really funny, and he makes you laugh, and he has perfect hair.”

Give it 6 months (or less, if my cyborg suspicions are correct) and you’ll be thanking Taylor for ignoring the haters, throwing her heart out again, then offering it to us in a multi-Grammy-award-winning-album. What a woman.

10 Questions with Bec Wilcock

Ever wanted to run 10km, a half marathon, or even an ultra-marathon?

Meet Bec Wilcock, an Aussie that has dedicated her time to training for triathlons, marathons and ultra-marathons, and most recently, the revered and absolutely insane Barkley 100 in Tennessee. So to say that Bec knows a little bit about lacing up a pair of sneakers and hitting the pavement would be an understatement. I chatted to Bec about life – how to tackle a 10km race best and grabbed some tips on how to run a half marathon.

What does your morning routine look like?

I wake up at 4:30am with a warm shower, a glass of hot water with lemon and green juice. Then, I head to teach an NTC session or go to 98 Riley Street Gym to train my clients. My real breakfast is mid-morning, around 9am, and my own training doesn’t start until 10am.

How many times a week do you train?

I train 7 times a week across a variety of activities.

What types of training do you do?

I currently do 3 runs per week (speed, tempo, and a long run), 2x weights sessions, a yoga session, and a “play” session (surf or a beach activity). My play session is just as important as my long run…so important for mental stamina. I strongly advise it!

Can you share your favourite smoothie recipe with us?

Acai, banana, blueberry, plant protein, almond butter, maca, L-Glutamine, cinnamon, flax oil, vitamin B12, & coconut water. It’s a must try!

bec wilcock instagram

What famous quote do you live by?

To live with purpose. To say the courageous thing. To celebrate the simple gift. To follow your dreams. This is a happy life.

What advice would you give someone who is going to run their first 10km

  • Find a well-structured program that suits you and you know you’ll stick to.
  • Be patient with yourself and appreciate progress you make.
  • Make it fun! Training in a group (like at NTC) or with a friend is incredibly motivating.

Bec Wilcock - Nike - Train - Run - Fitness

What helps keep you motivated?

I stay motivated by not getting bored with my training. I know why I do every session and I reward my body with rest and nutritious meals when it’s been working hard!

What are your top 3 tips for preparing for a half marathon?

  • Assess where you’re currently at; have you completed a 10km run?
  • Find a program that suits you and caters to your level of experience. The Nike Half Marathon Training program is designed to increase your speed, strength, and endurance over time.
  • Trust the process and enjoy the growth :).

Do you have rest days? If so what do you do on those days?

Of course! Rest days are just as important as your hardest training days. I normally go surfing, have coffee with friends, and enjoy a good sleep-in!

What piece of clothing is critical when going to run a half marathon?

The right shoes are so important, as they’ll be your main support. Look for something like the Nike Free Run Flyknit – it adjusts to each step you take, and are designed to make running long distances a breeze!

Basic Pieces That Are Essential For Every Closet

$

A good basic can transform an entire outfit.

Everyone has their own dressing patterns or go-to ensembles that make them feel like a million bucks. Most of mine are composed of various basic pieces that help balance out anything too forward, and even elevate any outfit.

Some of us have formulas that work wonders and others of us are just trying to figure out what works best. While you figure that out, there are a few wardrobe essentials you should definitely have.

Fair enough, they can vary from one person to the next, but a white shirt is a fundamental necessity, right?

I gathered a few of my key essentials you can easily fall back on especially on days where nothing feels right.

To start, I always have to have a basic white shirt on hand because it literally goes with everything and along with that, a go-to tote that I load up with anything that fits. I tend to collect much throughout the day. Then, a flattering pencil skirt is also great because it can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion.

You can’t go wrong with a statement top – when life seems quite bland, don’t be afraid to be bold. The best thing is a bold top pairs beautifully with all your solids (and even other prints) regardless of how it’s worn. A clutch or small bag for a night out can make all the difference in the world. And you can’t forget, a great pair of sneakers and heeled sandals. Casual boyfriend jeans are great for days you just want to be comfy and tailored pants because you never know if you’re getting that interview.

And finally, la pièce de resistance, the little black dress, which is adequate for a number of situations.

What are your go-to basic pieces? I would love to know.

What It Means to Add Value & Kill It as a Blogger

$
0
0

Since the beginning of my time at Zanita Studio I have preached one thing constantly: how to add value to people’s lives as a blogger…

And it dawned on me recently that I never actually explained what that meant. Let me ask you a question, why do you follow the people you follow on social media? (Tell me in the comments.) I am going to guess that your answer will be something like “I love their style”, “They have the best beauty secrets”, or “They’re really inspirational”.

My next question is: what makes you follow one particular blogger over another? The answer may not immediately come to you, but the bloggers and celebrities you follow offer massive value on a subconscious level that you may not even realize. From what they’re doing, eating, wearing, using, etc., you are being given value after value after value. You think these people are cool and you most likely want to be like them, so when a blogger Snaps the name of her favorite lipstick… she’s offering you value.

When considering what it means to add value, think about the type of value your favorite bloggers bring and then follow their lead and put your own spin on it. You’ll probably find bloggers do one or more of three things: educate, entertain, or inspire.

add value as a bloggerEducate

My most favorite way to add value is through educating my audience. Whether it be blogging, general business, or self-development tips, I love taking information that’s already out there and making it applicable to the average girl or guy. Sometimes all it takes is some rephrasing or utilizing a different medium (video, text, image) for the message to finally click. And there’s no reason you can’t do the same.

There is so much great content out there that people a. don’t know about, b. don’t have access to, or c. don’t understand how it applies to them. If you have access to this stuff, share it! What fun is it to have all this knowledge and not let people know about it?

You can educate people by hosting mini-rants or live Q&As on Periscope. You can take your followers on a step-by-step tutorial on Snapchat. You can upload vlogs on YouTube. You can show people where to buy what you’re wearing on Instagram. You can post your favorite recipe on Facebook. The options are endless.

Inspire

Pinterest built their entire business around the idea of adding value through inspiration aka “pinspiration“. Seeing as Pinterest is a multi-billion dollar company, using social media as a means to inspire pays!

A lot of style bloggers add value through style inspiration on Instagram, Pinterest, and YouTube by tagging the brand they use or wear. The more specific, the better. Say if you’re making YouTube videos, go above and beyond your YouTube competition and link your lamp, the camera you used, your makeup kit, hair tools, etc.

Inspiring is definitely the easiest way to add value because sometimes all you have to do is take a picture of your outfit, make-up, or location in order to motivate your audience to take action.

Entertain

If you follow some of the early Viners or the Kardashians on Snapchat, you’ll realize their main tactic is entertainment. Early Viners make hysterical Snapchats and the Kardashians just post their dreamy cars and luxury shoe collection for us to drool over. Either way, it’s entertaining and it keeps us comin’ back for more.

Some bloggers have made it big by making web-based series on YouTube like Jenna Marbles or on Vine like Brittany Furan. Even if it’s ridiculous and strictly comical, it’s still adding value to our lives by entertaining us. A great way to utilize Snap filters is by taking on an alter ego or silly persona. Brittany Furlan does this often and it’s hysterical.

So what if you’re not a comedian? Snapchat screen shooting is one of my favorite ways to engage and entertain my audience. I’ll get my followers involved in my styling process by helping me pick an outfit or accessory by screenshooting their favorites. I’ll also make fun of my boyfriend a lot which is very entertaining… for me anyway!

How do you add value as a blogger? Tell us in the comments below!

Getting Back on Track With Your Goals After They Fall Off Your Radar

$
0
0

We’re quickly headed for the middle of July and that means there isn’t much time left in 2016 to knock out all the goals you set at the start of the year.

If you’ve been laggin’ and draggin’, have no shame… I’m right there with you – this is probably one of my worst years ever in terms of killing my personal resolutions, e.g. building a healthier lifestyle through smarter choices and a consistent fitness routine; creating beautiful, meaningful content for my personal blog in union with my professional work; and expelling the toxic forces in my life while being more accessible to the people and things that matter! If you’ve also been cemented in life’s hurdles, here’s what you can do about getting back on track with your goals and resolutions… (P.S. I just started two weeks ago and it’s working!)

get back on track with your goals

– Write it out!

Specifying is key and therefore, journaling is such a genius idea whenever you’re stuck for anything. Write (in detail) everything you thought you’d accomplish by now, but haven’t… This gives you the chance to figure out where you’ve fallen short and in turn, helps you fill in those gaps. Plus, there’s a puzzling burst of relief and motivation when you write down all the things holding you back.

– Get started NOW.

Don’t overthink anything you’ve written and start taking action. Life’s too short to wait (hello, we’re already in July!) and it’s never too late. Over the last four days, I’ve ran 5 miles, squeezed in two 45-minute workout sessions, worked through some CSS on my personal blog, and edited several of my 300+ backlogged images from April!! I’m making victory laps! Now, it’s your turn

– Remove distractions.

While you’re filling in the gaps that made you fall short, annihilate anything preventing you from making magic happen. Phone calls, text, e-mail, and social media? Those are all things that can wait…excuses, excuses, make no more excuses. Everyone can use more time, but you’re never going to be given more, so what are you gonna do? Simplify! Block out chunks of time to yourself.

– Remind yourself  intently.

The minute you let your goals and dreams escape you, they can easily be lost forever. And since they can be so easy to forget and dismiss through the course of any day, you need to create daily intentional reminders to help you take action. This can be reminders set on your phone, writing in your journal, or having someone physically tell you (my kids have been helping me – no joke)!

Never forget, excellence is a habit, not an act.

How to Style Your Vintage Tees Like Gigi Hadid

$
0
0

We’ve all seen Gigi Hadid and her legs for days right?

Only in her early 20s, Gigi manages to set herself apart from other models through her covetable off duty style. I love analyzing what other people wear and dissecting the slightest patterns consistent in their outfits so when I did this with Gigi, I found that she wears loads of vintages tees on various occasions. So, if you’ve been wondering how to master Gigi’s effortless aesthetic, I’m showing you one of them – three different ways to put your vintage tees to use.

Who doesn’t want to know and master the art?

And you can with just a few simple pieces… The best part, you probably already own most of them, which makes it even better! The trick lies in the way you pair them up and for what occasion…

Imagine you have an important meeting with a not-so-serious client…

You want to look polished but with a nonchalant, edgy detail. Pair your favorite vintage tee with tailored pants. Finish it off with platform oxfords to elongate your legs.

Want to bring the bedroom attire to the streets?

Just wear your pajama blazer with cutoff shorts. Playing with proportions, a statement bag, and comfortable sneakers are key to looking natural.

If you have a date night with your significant other…

or a brunch session with your girls, think casual meets chic with a hint of prep. Turn it up a notch with cropped pants of a discreet color, chic loafers, and a casual leather jacket.

How do you pair your favorite vintage tees?

Why Self-Love is The Most Important Life Lesson You Will Ever Learn

$
0
0

Self-love isn’t about being narcissistic or selfish…

And it’s not about comparing yourself to others or boasting your esteem… It’s about self-acceptance, self-respect, self-conviction, and accountability for yourself! The ironic thing is we’re all so amazing at being good friends and lovers to everyone, except ourselves. We’re wonderful when it comes to uplifting a friend in distress, encouraging a lover who’s felt the wrath of failure, and celebrating their milestones (big and small), but never wholly there within when

self-love is indeed one of the fundamental building blocks for love, happiness, and success in life.

self-loveSo if you haven’t discovered what that looks like yet, keep working for it because it’s going to be the most important life lesson you’ll ever learn. Here’s why…

– It’s the first step to building a great relationship with yourself.

Independence from someone else’s approval, criticism, and security is one of the most liberating things you will ever feel! By doing this, you’re setting the stage for yourself – you’ll begin to trust and believe in YOUR decisions, and act on them with confidence. When you have this kind of relationship with yourself, everything else becomes possible and a whole lot easier.

– You’ll get much further with your hopes & dreams.

If you don’t stop dragging yourself down, you’re never going to get very far in life. Self-love gives you the strength and courage to pursue your dreams relentlessly, even on the bad days. You’ll begin to recognize and prioritize your needs, and ultimately, prosper into the person you want to be.

– It’s the only way to find true love.

Self-love is a prerequisite for genuinely loving another and allowing yourself to be loved in return. It emanates a mystical happiness, confidence, and positivity that draws people in and keeps them there. You’ll find yourself kinder and much more pleasant to be around and this all helps your relationship flourish. When you love and respect yourself, you also begin to see the boundaries of a truly loving relationship clearly and that means not tolerating crap you don’t deserve.
