My Top Food Photography Tips to Bring Your Images to Life

ben-food-photographymeringue-food-photography

This post is like a follow-up to my ‘How To Photograph Like A Foodstagrammer’ article. I’m not saying I’m the best Food Stylist because I most certainly am not, but there have definitely been huge lessons and tricks I’ve learned along the way, which I’m happy to share with you today. Ready for my top food photography tips?

Lighting

There are many different ways to use and manipulate light, but I like to keep it simple and true. I only use natural light – I like it tell a story and reveal the time of day I shot a photo. Was it quite a moody, dark shot taken late in the day or very light in the morning? I don’t use direct light, just light coming through a window away from the glaring rays. Some photographers like to use white screens or reflectors to create certain affects. For example, lighting a cake evenly without obvious shadows and highlights. To achieve this, simply hold a piece of white card or fabric on the dark side. The light will reflect off the white and onto the cake. You can also get into proper expensive studio lights, but that’s typically for bigger, commercial shoots.

Props, props, and more props.

You seriously can’t have enough food props. In fact, they consume my bedroom, but I have a problem. Anyway, food props are important as they can contribute to creating a specific mood or feeling. For example, if you’re wanting to create a wholesome rustic soup, you might use lots of old wood and thick cloths with neutral-coloured dishes.

easy-food-photopgraphy-tipssimple-food-photography-tips

Composition

This is something that gets better with practice. It refers to the layout of your food and props. You need to try to create a shot that is both balanced and interesting to the eye. Play with shapes, textures, and colours. Also, the compositional lines are critical – use your surroundings to bring your eye into the main focus or the food. That could be achieved by using cutlery or other props to guide the eyes.

Enhance

These are the small things in food photography, yet without them, the image would not come to life. Essentially, they are the decorations and garnishing. For instance, as soon as you remove meat or anything cooked from a heat source, it loses its liveliness and becomes grey and dry on camera. This is basically because it continues to cook off the heat. To resolve this, you can take the artificial route by using chemicals to enhance it, or you can go the edible path like me. I use burnt butter, a trick I picked up from a real food stylist. Simply melt the butter and continue cooking it until it becomes a beautiful maple brown colour. Then spoon it over your food to make it photograph-ready. For fresher foods, like salads, you might want to use things like oils or spray water to create a fresh, vivacious, and healthy feeling. I like to use herbs and salts.

enhance-food-photographyAA1A3955 copy

Keep things clean and simple.

It’s best to keep things as simple as possible when styling food so as to not distract the eye from the focal point. Keep props to a minimum and avoid filling the composition with useless decorative objects.

Add the human element.

Make the shot relatable. Whether that be an actual person holding the dish, taking a bite out of the food, or casually leaving a squeezed lemon to the side of a plate.

Practice makes perfect.

This is the most important tip. When I started, I expected my shots to be on the level of some of the top food stylists. That was seriously unrealistic because nothing is instant. It is by continuous practice and commitment that brings you close to perfection. Still, today I struggle to get what I think is the ‘perfect’ shot. If you scroll through my blog, you’ll see how far I have developed my style. Don’t beat yourself up because it is often the case that an artist doesn’t like his/her own work. Also, another thing I learned is to NOT compare myself to anyone else. Comparison will only get your images to look like everyone else’s.

hot-cross-food-photograhyapples-food-photography

Good equipment

There’s no denying, photography is an expensive hobby. I suggest starting off with basic equipment. As your skills improve and you’ve saved up, you can move onto better equipment. Currently, I am using a Canon 5D Mark III, which is an amazing camera, with a 50mm lens.

Post production

This is the final step in bringing your photos to life. I use Photoshop to edit all my photos. I learned how to use it at school and also with the help of Zanita’s amazing courses. I like Photoshop because I can incorporate text or other images into my photos. This can also be expensive, so if you don’t have Photoshop, you can easily use the editor on your phone.

7 of the Best Instagram Accounts for Subculture Style Inspiration

I don’t know about you, but sometimes my Instagram feed just feels like a big pile of same same same.

I mean, I follow people whose style I like and I pay attention to the new people they follow and tag, but that means a lot of the time, everything just looks like everything else. I went out on a mission to shake things up and these fantastic feeds are the fruits of my labour. Subcultures will always be the best new places to look for mainstream style inspiration.

Don’t get scared! Just hit ‘follow’ and let this mixed bag of subculture wash over you. You don’t have to go all-out. Take the good bits and leave the rest, e.g. take the hemlines and leave the haircut…

For the punk and grunge girls: A Thousand Chapters

It’s not easy to make two-colour purple lipstick look good, but Mickylene does it every time. Her feed is full of really high-quality images showcasing her style and gothic landscape shots of California.

athousandchapters instagram

For the artists among us: Fash of the Titans

This is such a delightful account. I love when I scroll past one of their art/fashion comparisons, but what I love even more is that now all the art I see around me is sartorial inspiration. Everything has become colour and texture cues for tomorrow’s outfit.

subculture style inspiration

For the poets, sad girls, and romantics: Audrey Wollen

Audrey Wollen’s feed is challenging in all the right ways – and so it should be. She’s an artist and intellectual whose work I greatly admire. Her feed reminds me that what I put on my body has the potential to communicate so much about myself. (And yes, I’ll always have a soft spot for redheads.)

audrey wollen instagram

For the queergender and agender allies: Tyler Ford

Tyler Ford was kicking goals long before Miley Cyrus came along and shot their name into the internet stratosphere. Tyler identifies as agender and the pictures force me to consider who I’m really dressing for every day. Is it me? It should be.

tywrent instagram

For the soul-loving, musically-inclined ladies: Solange

It doesn’t get much better than Solange. “Style” is an often overused word, but you can see Solange in twenty completely different dresses and somehow she makes each one of them her own. I crave her wardrobe, yes, but what I desire even more is her ability to make her clothes her own.

solange instagram

For the San-Fran art lovers: Rewina Beshue

Rewina Beshue is so cool. Her feed is a mix of art, style, and her San Fran friends, and I love it. Compared to some of the other feeds I’ve listed, Rewina’s images feel really genuine and it makes me think she’s a real human being and that by extension, maybe one day I could be as cool as her too.

rewina beshue instagram

For the L.A. thru-and-thru vintage/trashy/glam girls: Sophia Amoruso

Confession: I’ve had a mammoth girl crush on Sophia ever since I read Girlboss. I love how she’s the CEO of a multi-million dollar company that she built from the ground up, and she definitely still wears velvet platforms. Sohpia Amoruso is, duh, my go-to feed for a reminder that entrepreneurialism can look ultra awesome.

Mother’s Day Gifts That Will Make Your Mama Proud

Remember that time Dad spanked you and Mom came to your rescue…
And all the times you kept her up for 3 days straight because you were sick and fussy (you probably don’t remember)…
And when you shit and peed all over her favorite cushions (you probably don’t remember this either)…
All those early mornings she hustled you out of bed for school (and the late nights she stayed up packing your lunch, but you never actually witnessed)…
Plus, the countless lectures to study hard, make good grades, and reach for the stars…
How she told you to eat your carrots and your broccoli, wash your face before you sleep, and avoid that bad boy like the plague…
When she tried to domesticate you and teach you a few tricks in the kitchen, but you never cared (because she did it for you)…
All those times you should have listened, but never did and realized 5+ years later when it was already too late…

Mom wasn’t always right, but most times she was…

There’s much we owe our moms – a debt that can’t ever be repaid and that’s why Moms are the best.

Product Highlight: Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Water Foundation

tarte rain forest of the seatarte rainforest of the sea water foundation

As a lover no-makeup makeup, the perfect base always comes first.

I’m not about changing my entire complexion or masking every single flaw because it’s the little quirks in the skin that add the realness so let the imperfections shine through. For me, the definition of perfect synchronizes with fresh face, lightweight, and natural finish – 3 key things I’m always on the hunt for.

When I was introduced to the Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Foundation, I knew I’d met my match and was instantly riveted.

The Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua Foundation was my first ever foundation and became my #1 pick for years – it was this foundation that drew me to all bases labeled ‘water’; hence, my natural attraction to Tarte’s Water Foundation. I’ve also learned in my makeup journey that lightweight, water-based formulations are your best bet for summer – thickly slicked ones only encourage slipping and sliding in humidity. As far as quality, results, and packaging goes, both of these products are equally on par. Throw in wear-time (longevity) and I can say with certainty the Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Foundation has an edge (with or without primer). As a sucker for pretty packaging, Tarte did a brilliant job – this product comes with a dropper applicator (I’ve found that 2-3 drops suffices for my sheer preference), which I’ll dispense into the palm of my hands, dab across the center of my face, and blend outwards with a beauty blender. The texture is more aqueous than the Vitalumiere Aqua and blends out smoother. It absorbs into the skin rather quickly and provides a dewy, but not greasy, finish that lasts all day. I don’t even wear foundation regularly, but find myself reaching for this one daily over the last two weeks.

If you haven’t sauntered the road of Tarte, you might want to jump the gun ASAP – it’s your ultimate answer to top notch harmless makeup, ALWAYS concocted without parabens, mineral oil, sulfate, and other highly controversial ingredients most cosmetic brands can’t survive without.

All in all, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

How to Get More Snapchat Followers

how to get more snapchat followers

Snapchat has officially been dubbed the “it” app of 2016 and how to get more Snapchat followers is a hot topic. But why?

It gives you a real-time sneak peak into people’s lives that would otherwise be inaccessible and because stories are time sensitive, Snapchat creates a sense of urgency in our subconscious. God forbid you miss your 24-hour window to see Coachella!

Everyone wants to feel important and everyone wants to be seen and heard and the best way to extend your reach is through Snapchat! So if you want to get more Snapchat followers the trick is getting people to care…

Snap valuable content.

I follow 20 people on Snapchat but I only watch about 4 people’s stories because those people add value to my life. They offer business tips, life advice, and how-to tutorials. When you Snap valuable content, your followers aren’t wasting 5 minutes of their day looking at pointless Snaps of what you’re eating or watching your feet walk.

Offer people something that inspires, educates, or entertains them!

get more snapchat followersPromote, promote, promote.

I saw one blogger post her Snapchat username as her name on Instagram, which helped her get more Snapchat followers. Genius. This way it’s the first thing people see when they search you. You should also promote your Snapchat in the caption of your Instagram and Facebook photos.

Proceed with caution: You don’t want to keep saying, “hey follow me, follow me, follow me”. You want to give people a reason WHY by saying something like “I just posted the best smoothie recipe on my Snapchat” or “Add me on Snapchat to get behind-the-scenes action at Coachella”. This offers incentive and adds value to people’s lives.

Host Snapchat takeovers.

Snapchat takeovers are a #winwin for both people. The person hosting gets to offers his/her Snapchat followers something special by having a guest, and the person doing the takeover gains new followers from using someone else’s platform. Pretty cool concept, right?

Happy Snapping.

What is your Snapchat name? Comment below and let’s be friends!

Here’s Why You Need to Watch Beyonce’s Lemonade ASAP

$

0

Full disclosure: I finished watching the full hour-long visual album of Beyonce’s Lemonade five minutes ago and I had to get up and shake myself out.

I’d been gripping the edge of my desk for the full hour and I don’t think I blinked. Also, my throat hurts, like I think my jaw dropped at the beginning some time and I never closed my mouth again.

beyonce's lemonade videoThe 5 best bits:

  1. Serena Williams twerking in the fourth track, Sorry.
  2. When the camera pans to mothers holding portraits of Michael Brown, Eric Garner, and Trayvon Martin – three of the young men whose deaths fueled the #BlackLivesMatter movement.
  3. Bey dancing along the street happily smashing car windows with a baseball bat asking what’s worse between “looking jealous or looking crazy?”
  4. Jay-Z kissing Bey’s ankles while she’s singing a song that is so emotionally-charged that she’s crying out.
  5. Bey rapping/yelling “Suck my balls!”

Were you were waiting for a reason to try Tidal? Because this is it. Are you wondering how Beyonce could possibly level-up from how badass and invigorating Reformation was? Because she can and this is it. Do you want to take an emotional journey through gothic southern USA with an African-American queen as your guide? Who wouldn’t!? Get your popcorn, grab a drink, make sure you’ve got a good speaker system, and buckle up.

But you have to promise me that you will sit down and watch the whole thing! The. Whole. Thing.

The full visual album is a modern masterpiece. A lot has already been written about the first half being about Jay-Z cheating on Bey. Not gonna lie – it’s vitriolic and the videos that accompany the lyrics make it difficult to find an alternative interpretation. The thing that’s bugging me about that though, is that all these people on the internet are rambling on what they think Lemonade is “about” and whether or not it’s “about” Jay-Z… If there’s one damn thing this work is “about” – it’s Beyonce.

I mean, as a white woman, I could never understand what Lemonade feels like to watch or connect with as a black woman. The struggles, journeys, and triumphs of African-American women is a constant theme though! To harp on about how it’s about Jay-Z is way too shallow for what we’re dealing with here. Bey’s personal journey takes us on a trip through the generations that came before her. It’s in the lyrics and it’s in the panning landscapes, the hairstyles, and the cast. There’s even a snippet from Malcolm X saying: “The most disrespected person in America is the black woman.”

Now that I’ve mentioned the meaty part of what I admire about Lemonade, I want to finish with what I just really LOVE about Lemonade.

It’s so beautifully filmed. Each of the 12 tracks are a totally different vibe! I laughed in Hold Up and then I cried in Sandcastles. How many actual movies make you both laugh and cry these days!? The hairstyles are amazing. The costumes and outfits are awesome. Beyonce let’s us in to see a whole new side of her and I legit feel blessed.

Beyonce’s Lemonade = the apex of Queen Bey slaying.

A Last Minute DIY Mother’s Day Gift That Won’t Disappoint

diy mother's day gift

Unlike most teenagers, I get on pretty well with my parents. I’ve never really been embarrassed by them. This is simply because they are who they are: amazing! But this is supposed to be about mothers so before I get carried away, let me tell you what I made…

corn-raw-mom-veggie-cardscorn-veggie-mom-cards

You know how there are all these festivals and sometimes you forget about the fact that it’s Mother’s Day until the night before or even worse, the day of. For me, it’s hard to get away with this because I’m still living with my parents. Anyway, no one tell my mom, but I’ve often forgotten about it nor had it on my to-do list. I just kept it safely in my head, but never got around to it. So I came up with a foolproof idea for anyone who might share my same problem – a fun DIY Mother’s Day Gift!

Everyone has old vegetables lying around in their kitchen. Here’s what you can do with them:

Find some with good texture, pattern, or shape – I chose sweet corn, broccoli, and green beans. I also used potatoes, but let’s save that for later. Then, brush paint over them and press them onto card stock like a stamp. I used normal watercolour paint and applied the paint quite thickly over the vegetables. Carry on brushing and pressing until you’re happy with the design you’ve created. For the potatoes, cut it in half and then carve a design into one of the halves. Brush paint over the design and press onto card paper.

Wait for the designs to dry. Then, cut the cards into fun shapes. I cut out words and shoes into the paper so that there was a negative shape, which you could see through. Then decorate it, write your message, and give it to your mama.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mom’s out there. I love what you do!

Here’s A Fresh Way to Wear Florals For Spring

how to wear florals for spring
megan park floral dressflower dress and silver heels

A few weeks back, we insinuated a floral dress redux and now Zanita puts it into full action – transparent evidence that flowers aren’t for the prissy, nail-painting obsessed, and mirror gazers nor is it for the grandmothers and royalty. They’re for the free spirits, the androgynous feminists with offbeat styling tricks and shoes to kill.

Now that’s a fresh way to think about florals for Spring – what was once too-sugary chic has taken a turn for the badass!!

The mastery in the look starts with the blossoms themselves. We’re quite into ones that spawn across a billowy figuration, falling below the knee, but doesn’t quite graze the ground – a midi situation.

Megan Park just gets it and gives us the outlook we’ve been looking for!

She totally nailed the entire vibe with her bohemian-esque dresses that boast modern like no other brand. She takes a mainstream garment like an adorable shift dress and transforms it into something unforeseen – adorning carefully thought out sections in eccentric green and pink woozy florals… There’s absolutely nothing that speaks “Yes, my lord…” This is what we’re talking about – flowers worn right…toss on a surprising bomber jacket (check), mirrored heels or heel-forbidden (check), turtleneck layers (check). Badass – DONE.

3 Modern Ways to Wear Metallic

$

Once again, metallic is still one of the biggest trends and are we oh-so-happy?

We’ve seen it everywhere, from catwalks to street style. For AW16, Gucci placed a bet on metallic emerald for its skirts and dresses, Céline chose a subtle ivory version in her oversized shirts, and Acne played on gold in its one-piece body wear. Now, the question is: What we, normal citizens, that happen to be in love with the name of fashion can do? How can we wear them in our daily lives? Take a look at some of the options below and I challenge you to take a walk on the wild side with me…

#1 Modern & Feminine in Metallic Pleats

pernille metallic skirt

As seen on Pernille, and let’s be honest – this girl is always getting everything so right! I mean, how beautiful is this combination? One could say it is quite unusual, but taking risks and letting your personality speak for itself sometimes is all too worthy! The pleats are so-ever-feminine and classy, but the golden metallic totally upgraded the look to modern and futuristic!

#2 The Statement piece: Metallic Jacket

chiara ferragni in metallic

Let’s take a minute to gloat at this entire look. Chiara Ferragni totally rocked the bomber jacket by making it her one statement piece against an all black outfit! All I can add to this one is: Think outside the box! We can all do well by adding some life to our outfits.

#3 Metallic Mules

aimee song in metallic shoes

Bow down to these beautiful Gucci mules! This is literally the secret to having all men on your feet (if only….!), but if not all men, believe me – you will have everyone else’s jaws dropped all over the streets leering at you when walking in them!

Why You Feel Depressed & How to Fix It

$
0
0

Stress and depression are the leading causes of health-related issues in women to date. We hold ourselves to the highest standards, beat ourselves up constantly, and push ourselves to “have it all” even if that means sacrificing our own well being. But where does it come from?

Once you find out why you feel depressed, that’s when the real healing can begin.

It’s easy to get a prescription, but if you truly want to rid yourself of depression once and for all, you, must stop comparing yourself.

Every corner you turn in the name of social media, someone is on a lavish vacation, working from home with a beach front view, or being “gifted” with things the average woman can only dream about, so we pick and pry at ourselves to do better and work harder.

why you feel depressed and how to fix itFrom thigh gaps to nice cars and Kylie’s Lip Kits, there’s no escaping. It’s hard not to get #FOMO (fear of missing out) and feel depressed while vicariously living through these people. So what do you?

The Cure

1. Realize you’re not alone. Every single person has compared him/herself at some point in their lives.

2. Get grateful. It sounds cliche but gratitude is the best attitude. A truly successful person isn’t posting on social media about how great life is, he/she is too busy living it and being grateful.

If you’re an avid social media checker, it takes about two celebrity Snapchat stories before you’re like #FML.

But if you stay in your own lane and continue to focus on yourself and your work, you can kiss that depression goodbye.

You’ll be amazed by what opportunities arise and how much better your stuff gets. Many of the people “livin’ the life” don’t even check their Instagrams or Snapchats to avoid feeling like the ones who do check them often.

So take a page out of their books – just keep swimming and don’t look over… no matter what.

Do you compare yourself to others? Tell me about your experience in the comments below.

Mmm – so monochrome…

Look who’s gone and classed herself up?

And let’s not pretend there isn’t a few of you out there that have been waiting a long time for this. ‘Hey Zanita, maybe it’s time you dressed like a real functioning adult with a job, rather than someone who could be on some kind of a perpetual holiday?’

classic black lookWell here I am dressed like the real lady boss I am – and though it irks me to say, it does feel powerful. I read an article recently stating that people who do the black classic look are smarter than those who don’t, and while I’d like to flip the bird at whichever author wrote that drivel, I can’t deny that this outfit makes me look like I’ve got all my ducks in a row. It’s a total look from my friends at Karen Millen – and the fourth time I’ve had the chance to represent the brand on Zanita.com.

I haven’t mentioned here on the blog, but I did turn 30 a couple weeks ago. This site has been with me for most of my adult life and I’ve documented my style evolution over its course. While I still hope my aesthetic is as fun as it’s ever been, I certainly feel like my sense of style is growing up. Upon excitedly opening this package from Karen Millen, I even uttered the phrase, “Ooh, nothing like a good pair of slacks!” * with a broad Australian accent.

Picked that up from my Nan, bless her.

In all seriousness though, these high waisted black trousers satisfy my holy trinity of ‘chic – versatile – comfortable’ more than anything else I own and I’m frankly thrilled to add them to my collection. Pairs perfectly with a white tee and sneaks (who is this minimalist!?) or a bold printed shirt. I also feel like a million dollars in the coat. POWER.

Now where’s my next meeting? I’m feeling ready to kill it.

Picture a busy New York sidewalk on the brink of Spring. Zanita is bending and calling out directions from behind a lens pointed at this figure. Long and lean, her eyes sparkling for the camera, striking bold and free poses regardless of onlookers.

The woman is Jacky O’Shaughnessy and she’s a determined, fearless woman who says her high point is “yet to come.”

Jacky is an actor and model whose history is tied to both American coasts. Moving to New York when she was just 17, she worked the acting scene for twenty years before trying her luck in LA – eventually winning a Drama-Logue award and rave reviews in the Los Angeles Times. We’re profiling Jacky mostly because she’s fantastic, but also because we want to highlight awesome women doing kickass stuff in Zanita’s new home city. “There’s a strong history for me here,” Jacky explains, describing the firefighters and captains in her family heritage, inextricably linked to Manhattan Island.

You might recognise this beautiful woman from her American Apparel ads or her many television or stage appearances, so it’s hard to imagine that near the end of her time in LA she was turned down (again) from acting agencies because she was “too tall”. Jacky openly admits that “as an actor, you so often find yourself back at first base, and it’s exhausting.” For most of us unfamiliar with the stress and rigors of the acting world, it’s almost impossible to imagine how you could find the drive inside you to keep chasing your dreams in the face of that kind of rejection.

Jacky O'Shaughnessy black dressJacky O'Shaughnessy interview

As a lesson to us all though, Jacky returned to New York and discovered a new avenue to success in a couple of weeks. “I was sitting outside and Marsha Brady saw me as she waited for a cab and came over to me and said I was beautiful. Two weeks later we saw each other in a restaurant, had dinner together, and the whole modelling thing started. I’ve also had some acting auditions that went extremely well. So, once again, I’m encouraged.” Jacky will be featured in a major campaign for Diesel too, so you can expect to see a whole lot more of her soon.

As a woman who has dedicated her entire professional life to the pursuit of her dream career, Jacky has seen the acting game change significantly over the last few decades. “In the late 1980’s when I started getting TV work, “unknowns” could still get guest-star and co-star roles. Now, these roles, even walk-ons, often go to stars who are already well established. It’s the same thing with commercials. Stars used to shun TV and commercials. Ditto with modeling. Major modeling campaigns go to stars and now children of stars.”

If you think the changing scene is enough to stop her, you’re wrong.

“My advice is taken from Ruth Gordon’s acceptance speech when she won her Oscar for Rosemary’s Baby: ‘Never give up; and never, under any circumstances, no matter what – never face the facts’.”

Jacalyn O'Shaughnessy black dressJacalyn O'Shaughnessy interview with zanita

Zanita and I are both tall girls too, and as I gaze at these shots of Jacky I can’t help but feel angry that anyone could find fault in her striking figure. Personally curious, I asked her the old trope question: What’s the best style advice you’ve ever received? And she laughed, citing a long list of rules she grew up with, but finishing with: “The best advice I got that’s still valid was from my mother who kept saying, ‘Stand up straight!’ to which I would add, be comfortable.” It seems pretty clear to me that Jacky is comfortable in New York and in her own skin – two things that thousands of women around the world spend their whole lives working towards.

I’m not an actor or a model, but as a writer, I have real admiration for creative women like Jacky O’Shaughnessy. She’s spent her life in a grueling and judgmental world, yet still offers us an open and genuine personality. She shares her knowledge and experiences, and by refusing to rose-tint her journey, she paves the way for the rest of us to be proud of our own paths.

“Inspirational” is an understatement.

Sneakers? Check. Sweatband? Check. Topknot? Check.

Who would’ve thought that Spandex, French Terry, and Sneakers would become part of a stylish day-to-day outfit?

activewear trendadidas activewear for everyday

There’s no denying activewear (aka athleisurewear) became essentials in our daily uniform over the last year – sweats and yoga pants are no longer workout staples in the same sense walking about in full fitness gear is no longer embarrassing – it’s a proud statement (even if one’s not working out). It’s also a phenomenon that’s grown so strong, even top celebrities are on board, take for instance,

Beyonce’s Ivy Park, Kate Hudson’s Fabletics, Rihanna’s Fenty x Puma, Carrie Underwood’s Calia, Heidi Klum’s New Balance collab, as well as Kanye’s and Pharrell’s Adidas collabs.

Not just celebs, but the activewear lines themselves (Nike & Adidas) are gaining high-fashion credibility with their luxurious collusions (we’re looking at you Givenchy) and street style babes adopting Superstars, Freeruns, and Stan Smiths all the time. You can’t deny that you own at last one of these… There’s just too many to name – case in point – it’s got to be one of the largest growing retail sectors for all ages and genders.

activewear for everyday wear

When it comes to activewear, I’m a fan – it’s something I wear on the daily. The truth is I want to be able to go to the gym, work up a sweat, and then head to my favorite coffee spot without looking like a hot mess – let’s be real, looking good makes people feel good. Luckily, activewear pieces on today’s market make it that easy and accessible! I’m not complaining about brands jumping on the activewear bandwagon and making them look super chic because I’m 100% becoming the double agent!

Zanita and I are both excited to share with you this activewear editorial we worked on together! The goal was to forge a fashion-inspired editorial that focuses on something we firmly believe in: Getting sweaty! We couldn’t have been more excited to snag a few pieces from latest activewear label, P.E. Nation, founded by fashion vet, Pip Edwards – it’s athleisure at its finest. But anyway, one of my favorite things about this project was being connected over the web – the shoot was possible while sitting at desks on opposite sides of the world! Talk about virtual team work #dreamteam!

The Real Deal on the Korean Skincare Routine

$

As you know by now, I’m one of those incredulous people where if you tell me something’s going to be good for my skin, I’ll watch it promptly, but discreetly, and once I’m in, I’m all over it! No doubt K-beauty blew up over the last 3 years and I did exactly that – watched the market, explored the ingredients, and then went all in. I started with snail cream and became obsessed with it along with sheet masks – my trek didn’t stop there. I’ve been back and forth with my favorite K-beauty vendor, Peach & Lily, to get the low down on the Korean skincare routine and they were kind enough to talk me through it. Now the real deal was me putting it to the test and I’ve been at it faithfully for the past two weeks.

The nice thing about the Korean skincare routine is it’s completely customizable.

Although it’s commonly referred to as the “10-step Skincare Regimen”, there is no set number of products you’re obligated to and it’s more about devising the ingredients that are best for you. In saying that, Peach & Lily has an amazing team of experts that make insanely powerful recommendations – they did that for me and I couldn’t be happier with the personalized picks they proposed. Now onto the ritual I customized for myself inspired by K-beauty and the brains at P&L…

Step 1: Remove Makeup

For lazy girls like me that find too much effort required to properly remove makeup, a cleansing balm is a genius option. Banila Co Clean It Zero Purity quickly melts into the skin and effectively removes makeup fuss-free. It’s super fast and requires little to no effort. It looks like coconut oil and comes with a spatula so you can easily scoop it out.

best k-beauty cleansers

Step 2: Cleanse

A few months ago, I had been wanting the Mizon Egg White Bubble Cleanser, but they were sold out so I was overly excited to finally get my hands on it. I NEVER use foaming cleansers because they tend to strip my skin, but this one is off beat! It’s become my favorite cleanser to date. My pores look so much better (though I’m sure that can also be attributed to everything else) and my face feels so much cleaner. This plus the cleansing balm above is a real #dreamteam!

Step 3: Exfoliant (optional)

Exfoliating after cleansing is a standard – that’s simply the best way to rid excess skin buildup. I exfoliate 2-3x a week, but have not had the chance to trial any K-beauty exfoliators. I really want this seaweed one – unfortunately, they’re sold out.

Step 4: Toner

Korean toners are all about hydration unlike American versions, which are highly astringent influenced. The Aromatica Sea Daffodil Aqua Toner was probably the one thing I was least excited about, but it’s been a massive revelation. After using American ones for years, there’s an obvious difference between the two and no way I’m ever abandoning this aqua toner. It feels that much more rejuvenating while doing everything else a toner is expected to do.

korean skincare routine essence

Step 5: Essence

I’ve talked about the Cremorlab Mineral Essence before and I continue to use it, except I recently adopted the venerated SK-II Facial Essence (this starter kit is an amazing value). Essence is one of those things that are so subtle you’re fooled into believing it makes no difference, but you notice the effects immediately once you stop using it. Currently, I alternate between the Cremorlab and SK-II. It really plumps the skin up, making it more receptive the goodies that come next.

k-beauty ampoules serums

Step 6: Treatments

Now’s the time for serums and ampoules. These products can be layered to address multiple skin concerns. They’re highly concentrated and your best bet for the best possible complexion. I’m using both the Mizon Peptide 500 and Peter Thomas Roth Retinol Fusion PM. More to come on anti-aging. At this time, I’ll also apply my acne treatments though I think most estheticians would recommend using them after moisturizer…

Step 7: Sheet Mask (optional)

After Steps 1-5, a sheet mask can be introduced, which I’ll do a few times a month when my skin is really barren – they’re absolute necessities.

korean skincare routine sheet masks

Step 8: Eye cream

The Cremorlab Wrinkle Off Eye Cream is the BEST eye cream I’ve ever used for Spring/Summer. It probably won’t be moisturizing enough in the winter when my skin is radically dry. But anyway, this is EVERYTHING a gel eye cream should be – hydrating, delicate, and nourishing! It’s amazing under makeup!

Step 9: Sealant

After applying serums, your skin is not to be left alone. You need to seal it with a moisturizer. I’m still loving the Mizon Snail Cream, which I’ll use alone at night. For the day, this Caolion Pore Care Hydration Cream is gold! The snake and bee venom, which are supposed to improve skin texture, blemishes, and pores, really work their claims. It’s got an impressive texture, feeling like jello, yogurt, and pudding all in one, and then blends out like a dream. Definitely my moisturizer of choice these next few months as it’s really light and works gloriously as a base for makeup.

Step 10: Protection (for daytime)

And finally, you should know by now, SPF is mandatory during the day, rain or shine.

So if you can’t tell, I’m HIGHLY satisfied with my Korean skincare routine and I’m obsessed with all these products recommended by the P&L team. And just so we’re clear, this is NOT sponsored content…I’m overly excited (and maybe sound slightly exaggerative although I promise I’m not). I haven’t been this happy with my skin over the last 3 years! If you think the routine is too expensive, adopt one or two products at a time – perfect for testing.

I agree with Alicia Yoon, the mastermind behind Peach & Lily, that if there’s only 3 things you get, let it be the sheet masks, this oil-based cleanser to ignite your double cleansing, and the beloved snail cream!

The Makeup Trick Kylie Jenner Swears By

As I’m sure you know by now, my forte is career and self-development. Basically the last thing I’m qualified to blog about is beauty, but I am always intrigued by any makeup trick that supposedly enhances my appearance with little to no effort.

… cue the makeup trick Kylie Jenner swears by.

I don’t know Kylie, (I like to think I do though), and she didn’t swear me to secrecy on this one, but I do religiously watch her Snapchats so I’m able to pick-up on a thing or two.

Stalking, I mean, looking at Kylie’s Snaps, I can’t help but be fascinated. How does her face glow without looking greasy? How do her eyebrows look full and not fake? And how are her lips perfectly painted like Dolly Parton’s? Ok, odd comparison but you get the picture…

I don’t have all the answers yet, but one thing I was able to find out was Kylie’s secret to flawless cheekbones.

kylie jenner's makeup trick

Instead of brushing your blush normally on your cheekbones, Kylie’s make-up artist actually dabs her cheeks with the flat side of the brush.

I’m telling you it is amazing! This make-up trick gives your cheeks a sexy glow that wouldn’t be achieved otherwise. You don’t get any weird blotches or an uneven skin tone you sometimes get with brushing it on regularly. Plus the dabbing method prevents you from goin’ crazy on the blush and looking like Santa Claus. Who knew?!

Do you have any blush beauty secrets? Tell me in the comments below, I am such a newbie to this beauty thing!

A Warning for All Entrepreneurs: Everyone is Leaving Twitter

$
0
0

I’m going to start with a summary of my controversial opinion: the only reason you still randomly log onto Twitter is to make sure that yes, it’s alright, you’re not actually missing out on anything.

FOMO is the only thing keeping you from deleting the app altogether. It doesn’t make you laugh that much anymore and it doesn’t inspire you and it isn’t even where you go for breaking news. Why? What happened?

What can we learn from this huge Titanic and how do we capture the attention of the thousands of people jumping ship?

The figures don’t lie, it’s tanking and everyone is leaving Twitter. Business Insider reported that the number of tweets per day has plummeted by more than half since the platform peaked in August 2014. I’m writing to you about this here and now because you (and I) read Zanita Studio. We follow Internet trends the way we follow fashion trends – both because we want to and for many of us, we need to. Because we’re entrepreneurs.

Other apps have grown and give us what we want in a better way.

I use Instagram for an entertaining and inspiring platform when my bus is stuck in traffic. Snapchat is where I go for the surprisingly intimate and funny keyhole-peep into strangers’ lives. If there’s a super intense political situation, Periscope pulls through with live video feeds that Twitter’s 140 characters could never compete with.

The lesson here is one Zanita herself has applied to the principle of fashion blogging before – you need to nail a niche. If you’re presenting a platform that’s trying to be too broad in its appeal and effect, you’re not going to build and keep a quality customer base.

twitter-declining

There seems to be a higher concentration of dickheads on Twitter than at a Trump Rally and the moderators aren’t doing anything about it.

Their previous CEO, Dick Costolo, admitted that Twitter “sucked at dealing with abuse.” A guy, called Jon Ronson, has just written a book called So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed and the whole thing explores the horrific ramifications for people who find themselves in the eye of an online shaming hurricane – often starting on Twitter. Posting something funny that has any potential to be misconstrued or taken out of context could make you the next 21st century Monica Lewinski.

Twitter only updated its usage policies to combat revenge porn last year. Last year!? Not good enough.

The next lesson here is that if you want to bring people to your platform, your business, you have to also protect them. It’s the Internet – they don’t need bubble wrap and cotton wool – they need trust in lightening quick responses to harmful content. Gamergate was a sobering lesson in how dangerous the Internet can be for women when service providers don’t monitor their platforms. Make sure your bullying, diversity, privacy, and community policies are watertight. Especially if your customers are female.

So what’s the good news?

People are always evolving and looking for the next great thing! And that’s where we can step in. The Internet is the future and we’re the entrepreneurs ready to take the reins.

The Real Winners of the 2016 Met Gala

$

Forgive me for sounding like a conspiracy theorist, but the most prolific designers on this year’s Met Gala red carpet also happen to be some of the biggest advertisers in American Vogue.

met-gala-2016-dressNot that it’s a bad thing – I prefer to admire the “Oscars of Fashion” because it represents the jewel in Anna Wintour’s crown. The apex of her fashion media empire. If you’ve seen The September Edition, you’ll know that her decision to bring the world of celebrity into the world of fashion was not an accident, but a stroke of commercially-minded genius. She got so much hate for the 2014 Kim & Kanye cover, but here they are on the red carpet with the rest of the Balmain army.

Why? Because that’s where the population is. The cover was one of the highest-selling issues of all time. Maximum readership = maximum $$$. What else equals maximum money? Happy advertisers. And so, without further conspiracy-theorising,

here are the real winners of the 2016 Met Gala:

Louis Vuitton

Military boots for everyone! Nicolas Ghesquière was even one of the night’s co-hosts! Way to play favourites, Wintour. Alicia Vikander, Grimes, Selena Gomez, Jaden Smith, Taylor Swift, Lea Seydoux, and a ton more all repped the house. (And despite all my sassy reporting here, their looks were some of my favourites.)

Balmain

The Kim & Kanye hullaballoo was totally Balmain’s fault. I don’t know how ripped jeans made it past the door at a “White Tie” event, but if I was a security guard and I saw a guy with such crazy eye contacts, I wouldn’t start a fight either.

Also – did you hear – Kim was reportedly offered four different one-off Balmain dresses, and chopped two of them in half to make the one she ended up wearing!?

It’s crazy to think that the same fashion house dressed the “Balmain Army” of supermodels: Jourdan Dunn, Joan Smalls, Cindy Crawford, Doutzen Kroes, Sean O’Pry, and Alessandra Ambrosio. That’s kind of what Wintour is getting at – a mix of highbrow and lowbrow – I suppose.

Calvin Klein

Kudos to CK for keeping things classy, am I right? Emma Watson’s five-piece outfit was my favourite look of the entire evening and it was made entirely from recycled plastic bottles. To get even better, Amanda Stenberg’s red outfit was Afro-Futurism inspired and was one of the only not-silver outfits. Lupita Nyong’o rocked that minty green colour. Remember the pale blue dress she wore to accept her Oscar for Ten Years a Slave? She’s obviously onto something. And I thought her hair was awesome.

Actually, now that I think of it, CK was one of the only designers able to steer clear of silver. Well done!

Chanel

Wintour herself put all her chips in the old faithful. Did anyone else get the vibe that Lily-Rose Depp had picked the mini-me version? Willow Smith is their new ambassador and I think she nailed it too.

Honourable mention goes to:

Beyonce, duh. Because she “rocked that Givenchy dress”.
