Introducing: Free Spirit Bri Lee

Bri-Lee-finalThere’s been much discussion over the last few months about what’s becoming of Zanita Studio. And one thing is for sure – we’ve been hustling hard over the last year to evolve something that was once a traditional fashion blog into a new kind of creative space. We’re all about staying fresh and keeping you inspired so we’re putting forward kick ass personalities alongside Zanita to provide you with all the cool content you need to stay empowered and excited as you endure your journey to success.

We’re excited to introduce Bri Lee!

Bri epitomizes all the amazing qualities of a free spirit with a bold attitude from leaving her corporate legal job a year after graduation to pursue a freelance career (um, who actually has the guts to do that from the get go?) to founding the interview series Hot Chicks with Big Brains. Not only that, but her blunt approach to contacting Zanita directly landed her a dream internship, which afforded her exclusive NYFW runway coverage. As if running a website and freelancing didn’t keep her busy enough, she’ll now be joining Zanita Studio as a regular contributor. Here’s more from Bri herself:

#1 How’d you come to intern for Zanita all the way in New York City?

I emailed Zanita from Australia when I knew I only had a month left of my legal career. I made the transition to full-time freelancing at the end of January 2016 and have hit the ground running – interning for her over here for New York Fashion Week. I wanted to crack into the fashion writing and photography scene because I love it, but my portfolio is a little lacking in that area. This was the perfect (and most fun) way for me to do that.

#2 What’s been the best part of the internship?

Honestly, I’m so grateful for how much Zanita has involved me in her work. I shot her at the Zimmermann preview, interviewed an upcoming designer she’s about to feature, and will be putting together a runway video for the site too. I’m stoked I got to create so much content during my time here. Zanita is also hilarious and has great taste in food as well as clothes. I’ve had the time of my life.

#3 What inspires you most right now?

The people I’ve met over here are so passionate and have the most amazing drive and dedication. Seeing the runway shows live is like a hot injection of inspiration and excitement straight to my brain. I come home and sit up through the wee hours of the morning just writing, doodling, and editing videos. New York City itself is inspiring! Zanita is inspiring! Thinking of an answer to this question is inspiring!

#4 Last lesson you learned?

Turn up to runway shows on time and ask if they have any standing space. If you’re willing to put up with snooty stink-eyes from the PR people, there’s a good chance you’ll get to see a show. And then half the time you’re standing in there, some ticketed people don’t show up so you get a seat anyway! This happened to me at Dion Lee and Karen Walker. Boom!

#5 What are your plans for post NYFW? Back to Australia?

I fly home at the end of February (Boo! Hiss!) but I’m looking forward to contributing to Zanita Studio from Australia. As mentioned above, I run Hot Chicks with Big Brains, which is about to go to print back home, and I’ve just received a writing fellowship that I’m super excited to start working on. The freelance life will be a huge adjustment after the daily 8-to-6 legal industry grind, but I’m so ready for this new chapter of my life.

Isn’t Bri just a bundle of sunshine and inspiration? Be on the lookout for her first article this weekend!

My First Time! (At New York Fashion Week)

Exactly one week ago I was stuck in awful traffic creeping uptown, sweating under my winter layers, and a full twenty minutes late to my first show at New York Fashion Week. I had a ticket for BCBGMAXAZRIA and it was only my second day working for Zanita. Panicked is an understatement. I was cussing and looking up 5th Avenue at the bumper-to-bumper situation. Ten blocks out I decided I could run faster than the car was travelling – so I did.

IMG_6391In a hot pink, two-piece suit with purple trainers I yelled an apology back to my Uber driver and took off down the sidewalk. Dodging dog walkers and leaping over stacks of newspapers, I counted the streets I passed until I hit 33rd. Skidding round the corner I nearly hit a wall – a wall of street style photographers. Click click SNAP click snap CLICK. I must have looked maniacal with my flushed cheeks and my hair flipping around my face! If I ever get famous, those photos will inevitably resurface.

Fortunately fashion week shows never start on time (I only know this now) and I found my place in the audience with minutes to spare, waving at Zanita as the lights went down and the bass lines of the music started pulsing. The crowd went quiet and a sea of phone lights rose in the dark. In the few seconds before the first model emerged onto the catwalk, I felt a shiver roll over me, but I definitely wasn’t cold. The melody burst forth into the space as the first look went down the runway, and I can barely recall the details of the show that followed – only an overwhelming sense of excitement and wonder.

A runway show is affecting just like live music is. Hundreds of people come together for a shared experience of an art form they all love. It was dramatic like a Baz Luhrmann film. Inspirational like an afternoon at The Met. Exciting like a picnic with a new crush. I came home jabbering a million words a minute and didn’t sleep until 3 am.

In the days that followed, I saw Dion Lee, Karen Walker, Herve Leger, and a bit of Anna Sui. BCBGMAXAZRIA definitely wasn’t my favourite collection of the season, but I had a special experience that morning that I’ll never be able to recreate. The only thing that came close was my backstage access for Zimmermann.

Zanita and I had visited the Zimmermann studio a few days prior to the show and I shot her in one of their incredible bronze dresses. That studio space overlooking the Hudson River was a new kind of magic. Nicky Zimmermann herself talked us through the collection, referring to it (accurately) as “relaxed opulence”. A dozen people were scattered around the loft-style space, tucked behind overloaded tables, and in between bolts of fabric and packed clothes racks. Some were pouring over meters of silks, sewing mirrors onto breast panels, and fixing seams. Light poured in through the high studio windows and played through the hanging silk. We had a delightful morning.

Zimmermann Preview ImageOn the day of the Zimmerman show I saw models get their makeup done, then dress, then have their hair painted, and then walk the show. It gave me a new appreciation for the immensity of effort that goes into a single fashion week show. When the lights went down and the music came on it was a different kind of explosive. My curiosity and wonder from BCBGMAXAZRIA was replaced with admiration and awe.

The same goes for Zanita herself. Seeing New York Fashion Week from start to finish with her as my guide has been an absolute privilege. I couldn’t be more stoked to come on board the Zania Studio team. These people work hard to bring you the best shots, the brightest inspirational stories, and the fullest fashion coverage.

Work worth sprinting for any day of the week.

Remember When You Want to Quit

$

yellow-fur-coat-denim-cutoffs-flowerThere’s a divergence between where you start, where you are now, and where you want to be.

That’s what we call ‘the hustle’.

Negligently, you probably think you’re willing to hustle and do whatever’s required, but do you know what that quest truly entails? Who doesn’t want to be successful and happy – acquire a praise worthy job, financial freedom, even something as plain and simple as a killer body – a healthy lifestyle? I sure as hell do (and in fact, with all of the above), but what we really need to be asking ourselves is: What are you willing to give up to get there?

It’s inconceivably hard for anyone to get to where they want to be especially when hard work alone isn’t always enough. Time isn’t always opportune, the tide often rises against us, and the people who matter won’t always open that door, but that’s why it’s your responsibility to figure it out for yourself and carve your own path. This is the glory in chasing your dreams. Are you willing to put in 100 hours a week? Obtain 4 hours or even less of a good night’s sleep? Have almost empty pockets and possibly even no money at all for whatever time demands? Give up the luxury of potato-couching? If it were easy, we’d all be successful and happy.

So the next time you want to quit, remember…

no-elevator-to-success
Struggling is a part of the process as long as you’re willing to struggle…

Don’t give up what you want most for what you want now…

You’re allowed to take abrupt lefts and rights and above all, make mistakes..

You can slow down and even come to a complete stop – no one is watching your every step of the way and even if they were, they wouldn’t care if they mattered…

NO ONE ever has EVERYTHING together; sometimes we fall apart so we can fall back together…

Nothing lasts forever – the pain, the happiness, the ecstasy, the misery, it’s in constant fluctuation so enjoy it while you can (all of it, even the bad)…

And when you think there’s absolutely nothing left to give and no reason to try, you absolutely have 10% more.

Don’t ever give up! We’re rooting for you, remember that!

How Your Outfit Affects Your Success

Before the Zanita x Tictail event the Zanita Studio team had the pleasure of running into Mattias Swenson, co-founder of Bloglovin’, and yes, I had a bit of an entrepreneurial fan girl moment but instead of asking a ton of questions, I asked none and just listened.

Mind you, the atmosphere was very dark and very loud so I didn’t quite hear everything Mattias said, but I heard enough to be inspired to write an entire article about it.

He spoke about when he was applying for a certain role, he and one other person wore a suit. The competition was stiff and there were a ton of applicants hungry for the same opportunity and guess who were the only two to make it? The two in suits.

dress for successSuccess Tip #1: Dress for the job you want

I’m sure you’ve heard it before, but dressing the part really does affect your success. It symbolizes your commitment and willingness to do whatever it takes to get the job of your dreams, even if it means dressing like the CEO when you’re the receptionist. No job is below you, but that doesn’t mean you can’t dress like it is.

Success Tip #2: Let your outfit speak for you

What does your outfit look like when you’re sick? Hopefully it’s not the same as when you go on a date. When you don’t feel too good about yourself, you usually don’t look too good and vice versa. People will form their opinions about you regardless of what you’re wearing, but you increase your chances for a positive outcome when you’re exuding confidence because you’ve dressed for success.

Success Tip #3: Wear what you’re comfortable in

I am all about trying new trends, but if you’re trying to set yourself up for success at that business meeting, wear something that puts you in your comfort zone. Now is not the time to try those Stuart Weitzman boots and colorful fur coat. Stay true to yourself like the badass boss babe that you are.

Was there ever a time your outfit affected your success? Share your story in the comments below!

4 Tips to Help You Lead A More Creative Life

$

zanita-by-adam-katz-sinding

Creativity is such an important part in leading an effectuating life.

And by effectuating, we don’t mean financial success, an immense aggregate of designer goods, or superficial admiration from mindless social media followers. We’re talking about something meaningful, something that makes you proud, which doesn’t necessarily equate to a physical product or a business idea; it can prevail in the way you approach life and in the energy you expel in your daily encounters. For us, creativity means doing what we do best in a way that inspires others to want to do what they do best. Whatever your reason is for desiring a more creative life, here are 4 tips to get you there.

#1 Be aware

Inspiration exists everywhere and in everything, and in those fleeting instances lie opportunity – you just have to be ready for it. You do that by paying attention – listening to the conversations ensuing right before you, staying vigilant of your surroundings, seeing things for what they are, and reminiscing about your past (or others doing so about their own).

#2 Practice solitude

Notice how some of your best work manifests when you least expect it – when your mind is at complete rest like the moment you’re lying in bed at night, reflecting on your day or when you awake at the crack of dawn and everyone else is asleep? Take advantage of every moment you can to immerse in being alone

for in solitude, you drown in your thoughts and reach the deepest parts of your soul. You actually listen to yourself. You’re attentive and you flourish.

#3 Talk to creative minds & entrepreneurs

Ever experience a sudden eruption of motivation or burst of creativity by talking to someone who’s walked the same path? We’re sure you’ve encountered moments where you just want to give up, but hearing someone else’s perspective, especially when it’s someone you respect, you some how gain the hope or guidance needed to cultivate the propulsion. People exist for a reason so expose yourself to as many of them as you can and use them (but never in that foul way).

#4 Spend more time doing

One idea can trigger unlimited options and the byproduct you anticipated can very well come out entirely different – you may like it, you may hate it, but you do it over and over until you get it right.

Creativity is a process and we all know that good processes take time so do it now and correct yourself along the way.

A Surprising Introduction to Barre

I’ve always been inquisitive and super keen to find out what Barre is all about. I’ve seen a lot of well-known models and celebrities get their Barre on when scrolling through Instagram. So when a friend asked me to meet her in Sydney for a class and some brunch, I couldn’t be more excited!

models who barre

But then these questions started rolling through my head: Is it going to be hard? What are we going to do? How does it work? What do I wear!? (silly questions really :P)

So what exactly is Barre you ask?

mon 5 years oldIt’s a combination of conditioning exercises that include yoga, pilates, and ballet, which utilizes hand weights, mat work, interval training, and isometric exercises to get you sweaty, smiling, and all that feel good stuff.

So I jumped in the car at 6 am, turned the tunes up loud and proud and made my way to Sydney for a 9:30 am Barre Class! Of course I was fashionably late courtesy of Sydney’s #TerribleTraffic. I quickly dumped my sneakers when I walked through the door and jumped straight onto that mat that was waiting for me.

We started with some downward dogs, arm exercises with weights (….“1001, 1002, 1003” – I didn’t even know I had those little burning devil muscles), pliés which took me back to my 5 year-old ballet classes (#Nostalgic), and several other small movements that isolated my butt and thighs. It turned out to be a full body workout that was surprisingly relaxing? SAY WHAT! We finished off with some good stretching and mediation (closing our eyes and lots of deep breaths to get rid excess worry and stress). I have to admit, I was quite sweaty yet totally relaxed! 👊🏼

This was my first Barre class and though it was different compared to my usual exercise routine, I found it really refreshing!

This is a great reminder that it’s always a good idea to get out of your comfort zone and try new things. You may or may not like it but it’s a learning process. Who knows – you might find your new favourite workout!

barre body
I’m definitely more keen to try a Barre Cardio class now (same idea, but a bit faster paced) and I’ll give you an update when I get to it!

If you’re interested in Barre, I suggest keeping your high intensity workouts and throwing in a Barre session as something extra to spice up your weekly workout routine!

5 Barre Benefits

  1. Tones your body
  2. Improves your posture
  3. Strengthens your core
  4. Improves your flexibility
  5. Improves your mind and body concentration

What to Wear

I personally would wear tights or training shorts and a sports bra with a loose fitting singlet to allow free movement!

I would love to hear your thoughts on Barre if you’ve tried it or if you’re curious – comment below! 👇

Checking In: Catching My Breath In NYC

Exhale.

Since I last wrote a post about what I’m up to, a lot has happened – namely NYFW and the journey to becoming permanent in New York, which has been a very drawn out process and is still to complete. Tomorrow I’m flying to Milan for Fashion Week business and then to Paris to shoot a very special project. Sounds exciting, but trying to book a model for a shoot during PFW is an absolute nightmare as no agencies will release a girl from a whole ‘potential’ day of shows. In the fashion industry though things usually have a way of falling into place at the final hour so fingers crossed. I’ll forever love the thrill of it – the surprises then juggling and adapting.

I can’t believe how different our business has become from just a year ago – I’m incredibly proud of how far we’ve come. I’ve learnt several great lessons in working with Gustav who has a brilliant mind for business strategy and planning. I could have never reached this point alone – where we now have four full-time employees working for the site alongside our contractors. In my position as Creative Director, I’m able to put my full focus on the voice and direction of the content and I don’t feel like I’m treading water so much trying to keep up on posts – posting for the sake of posting. Struggling to feel what works because I couldn’t step back and assess my place. Now I’m so excited about developing the style and brand of Zanita Studio; it’s bigger than myself and strengthened by our talented team members. I want to thank you (again!) for coming along during this transition and supporting us – I love our site more than I ever have!

I think I’ve grown more in the last year than I have in the 5 previous, driven and confident, years. Ready for whatever comes. Look forward to sharing more of our ambition and story in my future content.

And here’s me in an outfit – textures and proportions. Fabulous bag. YAY Fashion! Haha :)

A Fresh Perspective on Double Denim

Some tend to think denim comes in waves while others of us believe it’s always in.

fresh-way-to-wear-double-denim

No matter which horizon you fall on, one thing is certain – we haven’t seen the mainstay contrived in ways more novel than now! In today’s diversified shapes and forms, it almost seems as if one can’t have too much of it, which is exactly why we’re constantly seeing our favorite fashion starlets promenade the streets in repeat double denim. We’re loving the latest innovations whether it’s undone and frayed, tightly cropped or culotte, worn over the shoulders, and even adorned in opulence. Though denim is inherently casual by nature, don’t be afraid to strive for elevation by way of standout accessories, funky or luxe footwear, and metallic add-ons.

zanita-denim-on-denim-outfit

5 Easy Styling Tips to Make it Work

1. Ensure the pieces you select for your denim on denim ensemble isn’t the same weight and wash in its entirety. This ends up looking too intentional.

2. Play with proportion for a maximum cool impact – this means bring out the flares and wide legs.

3. Don’t underestimate the slimming effect of dark washes.

4. A slinky, palatial heel – especially in gold or silver – instantly elevates while sneakers channel girl-next-door.

5. Take cues from Zanita and work in pops of color like the perfect jewel-toned emerald piece above. It’s a great way to add contrast even if you go for something as simple as a bold lip.

When Life Gives You Lurex – NYFW Has Thrown Us a Lemon

$

Zimmermann Lurex NYFW16It’s natural for the human mind to look for connections between disparate events. It’s even more natural for fashion week attendees to try to identify emerging themes across the dozens of shows they see. I went to six shows at New York Fashion Week and I definitely couldn’t stop seeing the same recurring feature.

It followed us uptown, downtown, to the meatpacking district, and the docks. We couldn’t be rid of it. Like a nightmare from proms past, lurex officially re-emerged.

Dion Lee, BCBGMAXAZRIA, Zimmermann, Herve Leger, and Karen Walker all featured it, and I’m quite sure I saw a hint of it at Anna Sui (although I acknowledge that you see a hint of just about every different kind of textile at Anna Sui). I left each show raving to Zanita:

“Did you see it!? It was there again! I’m telling you, dude – lurex!”

Returning home at the end of a long day, I contemplated how to use my discovery for good rather than evil. But is there anything good about lurex? It’s scratchy on your skin, too sheer to wear a comfy bra under, sweaty and synthetic for 10 months of the year (12 if you’re from Australia), and there’s a fine line to tread between “sexy” and “1960’s Catwoman”. (Disclaimer: I think Julie Newmar is incredibly sexy too.)

BCBG Max Azria Lurex NYFW 16Lurex is risky. But then again, we’re talking about fashion here, and risky can be exciting. Karen Walker herself took her bow in a double-turtleneck-lurex top, so there’s proof it can be done.

Most of the shows used lurex pieces as basics and built controlled outfits over the top of them. Skivvys, leggings, and turtlenecks poked out from underneath statement pieces and outerwear. There’s a potential lesson here: less (lurex) is more. If you want to avoid looking like a costume rental, avoid the overdone pieces. Calm down – it’s already sparkly.

Treat the fabric as an excursion into texture, rather than an opportunity to human disco ball.

Another option is to offset accessories. At BCBG the glimmer of an exposed lurex neck drew the eye to the décolletage and chest the same way a necklace might. Long-sleeved lurex appeared at the wrist from underneath Karen Walker’s long-sleeved dresses and basically replaced a bracelet.

Digression: You could even get married in Lurex and Maticevski has you covered.

Most importantly (and we learn this lesson from Missoni) wear it with confidence. Lurex is a wild beast that you can tame. Don’t let it wear you. And as always, if in doubt, defer to Karen Walker.

Beauty Hacks to Brighten an Exhausted Face

$

how-to-brighten-an-exhausted-face-makeup
Recovering from a sleepless work week or an exhausted weekend of parties and poor eating? Story of my life – I know that feeling all too well. I’ve got the beauty hacks you need to help fake a full-night’s rest.

– Wear a base slightly lighter than your natural skin tone.

When you’re exhausted, it’s evident in your skin – lackluster and dull. The goal is to fake a smooth enough canvas that radiates from within. Going for a base just a tad lighter than your natural skin color helps you achieve that – just don’t go too crazy. This is exactly why I reach for my Hera UV Mist Cushion Compact when my complexion demands that extra boost. You can fake a seamless neckline transition with contouring powder, but don’t do too much of that.

– Opt for a correcting concealer.

There’s no way to mask the dark circles under your eyes and redness on your face with concealer alone that’s why I’m such a fan of Laura Mercier’s Secret Concealer on days I need added coverage. Albeit scary in the pot and excessively orange seeming, it does an excellent job neutralizing those problematic areas.

– Layer on a brightening concealer.

But don’t forget lift those dreary areas with a brightening concealer like Dior Skinflash Radiance Booster Pen, which I believe to be the best of this kind as it’s nondrying yet has strong concealing capabilities. For lighter skin tones, the shade Roseglow (super light pink) really enlivens the skin.

– Stick with a pink or champagned-based highlighter.

Highlighting is a MUST in your arsenal for an exhausted face because it’s the one thing that’s going to lift when all else appears to spiral downward. Icy pink and champagne shades tend to bring forth a fresher, healthy sheen than say a gold-based highlighter. I’m a fan of NARS The Multiple in Luxor as it’s not frosty, rendering that ultra subtle glow I like.

– Become BFFs with your light, shimmery eyeshadows.

The first thing exhaustion typically draws attention to is your eyes – those bags and droopy lids,  both ill in color – my nemesis. I emphasize the lifting and brightening because it’s so essential in awakening your face! Don’t underestimate the power of light pink, gold, and/or champagne colored eyeshadow placement. Stila Eye Shadow in Kitten is my trusty default. With a fairy light hand, dust it over the inner corner of your eyes, right underneath the tear duct, brow bone, and center of your eyelids.

– Draw attention away from the eyes.

Now that we’ve lifted in all the right compartments of the eyes, curl those lashes and direct your attention away from it. Pop on a bright lip, which we know also has instant gleaming effects in its own way. Bright lips doesn’t necessarily mean cohere to red, orange, or pink – something dusty or deep works just as well like NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Rikugien.

Original_Statement Bags_Square Collage

If you don’t know the power of a good statement bag, you’re in for a huge surprise!

But we’re sure you already do as it seems to be the one thing all fashion lovers are willing to drop the highest volume of dollars on (either that or shoes). After all, it is an investment right? You probably own heaps of handbags varying from totes and flaps to top handles and micro shoulder bags. Inclusive in that is handheld clutches, chain straps, and full blown leather bags. If you’re looking for a peculiar way to add on to your daily wear, there’s no better way to make the update than by choosing between added opulence, geometric prints and patterns, floral textures, fringe, metallics, and multi-colored brights. Whether you’re a classic ladylike type or slouchy free spirit, you’ll find something fitting amongst this compilation. We’ve got all the novelties you need right here:

-The Graphic Tote

For when you need something massive enough to house all your necessities, which means something will eventually get lost in the thick of it. We tend to think big means all in, but at least easy access alleviates some of that mess.

-The Teeny Mini

Helps with portion control as it forces you to pick only the absolute essentials to toss in, which we all know that equates to credit card, driver’s license, lip balm, and (maybe) keys.

-Fringe

If you want to add texture or movement, let this be your pick. Those long loose strands are always influx.

-Boxed Bag

Impractical, but if you need an excuse to invest, it does add elegance and structure usually reserved for those special night outs.

-Excessive Hardware

Great for when you’re too lazy to accessorize. Let the bag do the talking!

As the world changes and we advance into the technological age, we’re only growing more connected than before. It’s the reason why I can have my closest friends dotted from all over and never lose touch. It’s also how we scout out talent across the four corners of the globe, discover new brands, and how others can find us by way of social media. This progression affords everyone the chance to share their story and find those who can connect with it using these mediums.

So the point of the story goes like this –

Whole9Yards is where femininity meets cool – my favourite track. It looks kinda like wearing lace with sneakers or brogues. Maybe add some denim or a t-shirt. It’s patent on baroque print, elegance with the right hint of skin. Luxe for the everyday. Pretty details with architectural structure. Best of all – created with a mind for social responsibility.

Music for Long Haul Flights

Sometimes when you’re on a long haul flight, it’s about surviving more than arriving.

Yes I’m being dramatic, but I spend so much time travelling, you can understand why I might be sick of plane travel. It’s a jolt to the system and it takes a certain kind of mental willpower to stay positive both through the journey and in recovery.

Music soothes the soul and if I’m not watching a movie, I’ll have my headphones in – I’m blasting tunes nonstop. I even have music playing into my ears as I sleep – the sound from the interior of a plane can be absolutely deafening. I love beats that are slow and steady, reminiscent of a heartbeat combined with a lilting voice. These tracks are as dreamy as they come.

Great to listen to while working too.

How to Prepare For Your First International Flight

packing-for-international-flight

If you’re like me and haven’t experienced the luxury of abroad travels, the thought of doing so might seem more than just a little frightening.

Preceding Zanita Studio, cities like Paris, Sydney, and even frequenting New York City seemed to exist only in my dreams and to think now that in just a few more days, I’ll be jetting off and loafing in some apartment in the gist of Paris is quite heart stopping. I can’t even fathom the thrill, the adrenaline that will keep me well wired through the exhausting timezone shifts. But let’s not get carried away here, I haven’t even completed the obligatory prep work to guarantee a harmonious journey. Aside from my inability to enunciate the most basic French phrases (minus Parlez-vous Anglais) and the American-grieving Parisian horror stories, there’s so much more to consider that I’d rather not suddenly realize in the afterthought. I’m winging this in the process, but I’m sure it’ll still be helpful to you in arranging your first international flight.

prepare-for-international-travel

– Passport/ID

As much of a no-brainer as this sounds, first things first, you need a passport! With all the petrifying pickpocket stories I’ve noted to date, I’m keeping my card pile to a minimum. This means I’m forgoing my driver’s license entirely because I have no intentions to drive. The passport itself will serve as a valid form of ID.

– Money

You should be safe with any major credit card like a Visa or MasterCard; I know Visa is good in France (because my brother told me so), but this information is easily accessible. You should also check your credit card company’s foreign transaction fee policy and notify them of your travels so they don’t suspect fraud when they see a charge transpiring on the wayside of the world. And make sure you have a large enough balance for emergencies in case shit happens.

Currency conversion is another topic of concern, but in any case where I might need cash, I’m just going to pull it from an ATM at the destination. Apparently, it does the conversion for you. You should really consider cash if your trip is totally spontaneous, but being that I have family in Paris, I’m not that concerned as you can probably tell.

– Your phone

You’re open to use wifi wherever so an international data plan isn’t absolutely essential, but since I’m feeling pretty nervous and paranoid about everything, I’m getting one before I head out – playing it safe if I happen to get stranded somewhere and need massive help.

– Timezone accommodations

With Europe 6 hours ahead of the U.S., I plan on sleeping amongst the clouds so I can hopefully arrive energized by the time I get off the plane. But as I mentioned above, I don’t foresee this being an issue as I’m sure the excitement won’t subside until I’m en route back home. Then comes the real jet lag. It’s just something to consider depending on where you’re headed.

– Location, location

We learn from domestic travels that everything bodes well when you know exactly where you’re going so I’m just going to apply this to my international destination for a minute here – you’re better off knowing where you’re going. Get those addresses in place. Mine have been long shot and saved on my phone.

Anything I might have left out that you can shed some light on? I’ll take it!

Introducing: Nicole Rogers

nicole-zanita-studio

There’s been much discussion over the last few months about what’s becoming of Zanita Studio.

Meet Nicole Rogers!

Just when you thought you were becoming familiar with these introductions, we throw you a curve ball. What’s cool about Nicole is that she doesn’t join us as a contributing writer like you’ve seen in the past, but rather a visual expert. Notice a change in the aesthetic of the killer collages and graphic medleys here? Yup, all can be attributed to Nicole’s artistic dexterity parallel to Zanita of course! Although most of her work will be done in the background, she plays an integral role at the studio and we’re beyond ecstatic to see what cool things she’ll whip up in the months to come. And now, you can hear from her yourself:

#1 Where are you from and how’d you end up in NYC?

I am from Texas and went to school at the University of Oklahoma. I was a journalism major and during college I landed a summer internship with a magazine at Hearst. I fell in love with the city immediately and moved here as soon as I could after graduating.

Nicole-rogers-zanita-studio

#2 What do you do for Zanita Studio?

I am the Project and Design Coordinator for Zanita Studio. This means I help edit photos, create collages, pitch ideas for content on the site and social media, help create and maintain production schedules, advise on color schemes and site assets, and design anything a client might need!

#3 Why fashion?

Fashion is it’s own form of creativity. It offers a very personal and authentic form of self expression and, because of this, I’ve always been drawn to it. It is very exciting to be able to work in an industry that encourages you to develop your own character and sense of style.

#4 Top 3 spots to eat in NYC.

This is difficult because I LOVE to try out new restaurants in the city. Palma is my favorite for pasta. It has the cutest, most picturesque back patio. Barbuto is my favorite brunch spot (hello, breakfast pizza!) And, Tacombi Fonda Nolita is definitely a top pick for some of the best tacos.

#5 Best advice you’ve ever received.

“Maintain perspective.” It’s so easy (especially in this city) to become overwhelmed with work and the daily ongoings of life. It always helps to take a bit of time out of the day and check in with myself to adjust my frame of reference if need be.

Be sure to follow Nicole on Instagram and Snapchat @nicelizz!

5 Lessons in Life (and Style) I Just Learnt from the Oscars

$

I used to think the Oscars happened on a different planet. I mean, celebrities aren’t real people and movies aren’t real life, right?

After this years’ ceremony I’m not so sure anymore. It was different. All the glamorous people talked about real issues, there were tons of kickass women supporting each other and representing feminism, and Whoopi Goldberg wore a huge octopus bracelet. What more could I need?! I felt moved in a real way this year, almost like the awards had made me think… Almost like… I’d learned a few things

Leo1. Award for the best never-give-up attitude goes to: Leo.

Leo was nominated FOUR times before winning on the fifth. How many things have I tried really really hard to do FOUR times in a row, not succeeded, and still got up and tried to do again a fifth time? (Real answer to this rhetorical question: getting back to Australia and trying to recreate Magnolia Bakery cupcakes.)

Runner Up: Diane Warren

Diane missed out on an Oscar for the eighth time and I think an altogether different story can be learned from this: perspective. She made some comments about being disappointed on the night, which is understandable, but she was also partially responsible for a radical and incredibly moving tribute to abuse survivors that was televised to millions of people. One thing I’ve learnt in my creative career so far it that consistency is key. Delivering great results on time, every time. A woman with a consistently awesome career spanning decades isn’t really a “runner up” at all.

Brie Larson after-party in Monse2. Award for best work-to-dinner (I.e. Oscars-to-Vanity Fair After Party) goes to: Brie Larson.

Why? Because Monse. That pale pink velvet drapery, oh man, it does things to me. Not to mention Zanita and I just saw it at New York Fashion Week. Remember this killer collage Zanita made from the Monse runway show? I sure do.

3. Award for most ballsy/gutsy/badass personal style goes to: Jenny Beavan.

A ton of dudes didn’t even clap when she walked past them to the stage (seriously look up the footage it was awful and hilarious) until she got on stage and they realised that, actually, in fact, she was the winner. Yes folks, that’s what an Academy-Award-winning costume designer looks like. She has a diamante skull on the back of her leather jacket.

Being comfortable in your own skin is one thing, wearing whatever you damn well want to literally the most fancy event in world is a whole new level of guts. New superhero status unlocked.

Whoopi4. Award for best accessorising combined with yeah-I’m-still-kickin’-it goes to: Whoopi Goldberg.

Did I mention her bracelet is an octopus? And honestly, look at that smile. Anything that reminds me that Sister Act exists is deserving of an award.

5. Award for best and most important overall theme of the night goes to: Encouraging conversation and fighting stigma surrounding sexual abuse and assault.

Where do we start? Lady Gaga’s musical tribute featuring dozens of sexual assault survivors on stage with her. Kesha’s tweet thanking Gaga in response for the song. Spotlight (a film about child abuse in the Catholic Church) won best picture when just hours earlier the stars and director of the film joined a march in downtown LA for sexual abuse survivors. Brie Larson won Best Actress for Room which is a movie about a mother caring for her child whilst trapped by depraved captor for 17 years.

It’s heavy stuff to talk about next to velvet and diamantes, but hey, that’s what I think was truly beautiful about the Oscars this year. For the first time (in my opinion) it started to shift toward recognising the real spectrum of human experience.

If you didn’t see ceremony, get yourself some popcorn and grab a pen and pad to make notes. Even if all they say is: OCTOPUS.

Broccoli & Bean Salad Like You’ve Never Had

So the inspiration behind this salad is rather strange.

At my school, there is a group of 5 teachers who have what they call a Salad Club where they basically take turns making salad for each other. Each day, one teacher will make a salad for the whole group and I think that it is seriously awesome.

Anyway, I heard about it last year but it escaped my mind until this past Friday. My Afrikaans (one of the languages of South Africa) teacher was away somewhere and so we had a substitute teacher who brought along with her this rather large dish. The substitute was quite a trendy looking lady. She wore a black jumpsuit with a brown leather belt and one of those beaded wood necklaces, which matched the colour of the belt. She had a leather backpack with another trendy bag. We had been given work to complete, but it was the last lesson on a Friday and very hot. We asked the substitute teacher what was in her dish because it looked very heavy. She told us that she was apart of the Salad Club and that this was her contribution. She opened the dish (it had a lid) and showed us what was inside. When she opened her dish, the smell of charred vegetables was so alluring. She had chargrilled a whole bunch of different vegetables, eggplant, peppers, and broccoli.

broccoli-linen

At this point all I wanted was to be apart of the salad club.

She asked if we would like to try her salad. The idea of sharing her salad was amazing, but I’m not one for picking from salads without appropriate cutlery and plates, but I tried it anyway. I went for the broccoli and it was literally a life changing moment. Before then, I had only ever tasted flavourless boiled or steamed broccoli, the kind you dread as a child. This literally tasted like nothing that I had ever tasted before. It had a very sweet, smoky flavour and quite a crunchy texture. I thought it was tossed in some fancy dressing, but when I asked her, she told me she had actually done the opposite. She heated some olive oil until very hot and then placed broccoli into it, covered with a lid, and let it do its thing. That way it gets steamed with a beautiful charred crust (the smoky flavour). Then she simply removed it from the heat, sprinkled on some Maldon sea salt, and a little olive oil. Who would have thought you could learn such useful stuff at school?

pan-broc

I was shocked and amazed at the flavours she was able to create with a vegetable I thought I knew well. I came home and I made this salad.

This is the perfect summer salad. It’s light and can be knocked together in minutes. It’s filled with all kinds of beautiful ingredients including smoky broccoli, lemon zest, butter beans, baby tomatoes, and a simple dressing.

Broccoli & Butter Bean Salad

Serves 4 people

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbs olive oil
  • 1 bunch of broccoli, broken up into pieces
  • zest of 1 lemon
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • a handful of cherry tomatoes, cut in half
  • 1 cup butter beans (I used tinned and then rinsed them)

Dressing:

  • juice of half a lemon
  • 3 tbs olive oil
  • 1 tbs honey
  • salt and pepper to taste

raw-broc

Method:

Place a frying pan over a high heat and leave for a minute to heat up. Add your oil to the pan. Next, place your broccoli into the pan along with the lemon zest. Immediately cover with a lid and leave to cook for about 2 minutes. After two minutes, remove the lid and toss the broccoli around. Cover again and leave to cook for a further 30 seconds to a minute.

Once the broccoli has cooked, it will be a bright green colour with dark char marks. Remove from the heat and sprinkle with sea salt.

broc-on-plate

Place all of your ingredients into a bowl and toss them around so that the dressing mixes with the other ingredients. Season with salt and pepper to your liking.

Sending a Successful Cold E-mail

$

sending-a-cold-emailSending a cold e-mail for the first time is hard to achieve but not impossible. A successful cold e-mail is a combination of perfect timing, subject line, and explanation. From countless unanswered e-mails to lifelong virtual friendships, I have acquired quite a repertoire of ways to send, (and not send), cold e-mails so the first time won’t be your last.

Perfect timing

There’s a reason people always say, “timing is everything”… because it really is! Did you know there are actually bad days/times to send an e-mail?!

The worst days to send them are on the weekends and the worst times are after work hours during the week. The majority of people check their inboxes from 9-11 am during the week so if you want to increase your chances of being seen and heard, I’d highly recommend this. I’ve gotten great responses from sending cold e-mails at 10 am on Tuesdays or Wednesdays.

Similar posts

Fridays are a hit or miss. Usually by the time Friday rolls around, everyone’s ready for the weekend so they hold off on responding to unknown e-mails until Monday and by then you could be forgotten. On the other hand, people are said to be happier on Fridays so this might elicit a more positive response.

Catchy subject line

So you’ve picked a great time to send your message, now you have to get the person to open it. The best way to create a catchy subject line is to browse through your inbox, look at your emails, and see what catches your eye. What subject lines have gotten you to open an e-mail?

You want your title to convey the main point of your e-mail but also be unique enough for someone to want to open. I’ve personally used, “Looking for advice”, “Thank you for the inspiration!”, “So nice meeting you”, and “I really need your help!”. Of course depending on the recipient, some headlines are more appropriate than others so it’s up to you to decide.

I would advise against using generic lines like, “Exciting opportunity!” to grab the reader’s attention. This phrase is so overused it’s an automatic pass for most people.

Irresistible offer

The next step in sending a successful cold e-mail is to make an offer the recipient can’t refuse. If you want something from him/her, you better have a good explanation for why you deserve it.
sending-a-cold-email

Start by complimenting the person, specifically about what the company has done and how it’s impacted you. Then, work in how you’d be a valuable asset or how you could benefit this person. You could say something like, “I really loved your article about creating your own job, I just recently created my own website to do just that. I’m wondering if you have any advice or suggestions for someone just starting out. My audience is highly engaged and I know they’d love to hear what you have to say”. #nailedit

You can also offer a service for free like writing, social media managing, taking pictures, helping redesign a website, etc. Let the person you’re cold e-mailing know you’ll do whatever it takes.

What has been your experience with cold e-mails? Share your story in the comments below, we’d love to hear from you!

xx Britt

15 Minute Airport Face

Heading to the airport for Paris in T-3 hours

and not exactly sure what I should do with my face given the lengthy flight and work schedule as soon as I arrive. I’ve never been on a plane ride this long so from what I’ve experienced – a whole 5 hours – I need to whip up something quick and easy yet promising enough to sail me through the entire day. (Note to self: Paris is 6 hours ahead.)

For someone whose favorite kind of makeup is one that indicates almost none at all, I know the skin must come first and this alone mandates much time and care in its own way. It needs to appear naturally moisturized and hydrated; ideally dewy, but not shiny – youthful and fresh without being too obvious. And though I most often talk up a big storm about sultry eyes, I’m not bothering for the the air (or lack thereof) ride. I’d rather not run the risk of unexpected narcoleptic tendencies ensuing undesirable smudges and eyeliner transfers. So just flushed flesh this time – let’s get started…

1. For this effect, I apply a dollop of La Prairie Cellular Radiance Perfecting Fluide Pure Gold followed by my faithful Dr. Hauschka Quince Day Cream and let the two sink into a glorious dream.

2. Then comes primer and right now, I’m totally diggin’ Hourglass N28 Primer for my maniacal dry skin. Then, I fuse equal parts of Nars Tinted Moisturizer and Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua Foundation, make swipes across my face and blend away with damp beauty blender.

la-prairie-dr-hauschka-hourglass-chanel-nars-becca-stila-makeup

3. Time to fake an awaken face – my eyes to be exact (these bags don’t lie) and nothing does that better than my Lancome Maquicomplet Concealer capped with my endlessly raved Dior Radiance Boosting Pen. For the discoloration around my nose and unwanted blemishes, Dior Star Concealer has been pretty life changing.

Similar posts

4. This face needs to be sealed hailing from the U.S. all the way to Paris so I’ll bust out my cream blush and liquid highlighter before dusting it off with powder – Stila & Becca are two true loves of my life.

5. Letting that base penetrate my skin now, I move onto the brows first by priming them then working in brow powder and pencil. You already know by now how much I love Nars Eyeshadow Primer and Anastasia Brow Wiz. Nonstop talk!

6. That should be enough time for everything to sink in, so I’ll follow up swift and subtly with all the necessary powders as advised in this post to ensure a budge-proof base – bronzer, highlighter, & blush.

7. Base checked. Now onto the eyes – eyeliner is a must for me and the kind with a flick is my never-fail choice. I’ll pop in a matte brown eyeshadow color in the crease and a light, iridescent tint in the inner corners. Finally, off to pump the lashes and finish with many coats of mascara – voila!

7. Lip balm is much needed this time of year so oui to Dior – you know it.

…blending right in like a French or so I hope since I’ve never actually been there. :)
