4 Easy Steps to Defeat Jealousy

Easy Steps to Defeat Jealousy - Zanita Studio

Jealousy creeps up on us in different aspects of life and it also happens to be one of the most unproductive, negative emotions that exist…so why?

It exists when when you see someone else experiencing something you’d like to have.

What makes you jealous might not matter to the person beside you because it all comes down to your values and what’s important to you. And although natural, it is self-destructive and distorts your reality, your attitude, and your feelings. The consequences? You being hurt and hurting those you care about most. That’s why it’s so important to take control of those negative emotions and do your best to convert them into positive energy. Here are 4 easy steps to show you exactly how:

#1 Accept that you’re jealous.

No one likes to admit they’re jealous and to be frank it’s quite an embarrassing confession. If you’re competitive in nature, it’s likely that you’ve felt resentful towards someone else because of their advantages at least once in your life. These annoying feelings exist in intimate relationships, sports, appearance (especially girls), and in our work life. While I may not be that crazy, jealous girlfriend, it’s very possible I envy others’ successes as a career-driven individual especially those I know personally. The first step to tackling jealousy is to recognize and admit that you’re jealous – it happens and that’s okay. (Just so we’re on the same page, envy and jealousy are essentially the same thing).

#2 Convert your emotions into a stimulus.

No matter where your feelings come from, use them as a motivator to become better for yourself. Do not compare someone else’s accomplishments to your own. You have no idea where they have been. Instead change your perspective – are they somewhere you want to be? Do they have something you wish you had? Are they doing something you want to do? If the answer is yes, turn your angry feelings into curiosity and figure out how you’re going to get there too, then take action. The busier you keep yourself, the less time you have to worry about and focus on those around you. Keep it moving.

#3 Applaud Others’ Successes.

It’s so much healthier to feel genuinely happy for someone else so compliment them and celebrate their successes. Let them know how happy you are for them and soon enough, you can join them!

#4 Practice gratitude.

Remember that life is never as it seems, no one ever has everything together. While someone may look happy and successful on the outside, you have no idea what’s tearing them apart on the inside – the same goes for you. You may not be happy in every compartment of your life, but surely there are things to be grateful for…shine the light on those things instead.

How to go From Amateur to Pro in the Fashion Industry

0
0

Today’s fashion industry icons did not enter the territory with an expectation of becoming an overnight sensation or working with high-profile clients.

It was a gradual process that required much sweat, tears, and grit. The competition is stiffer today than ever before with the Internet and social networks shining the light on elite talent and making them more available and accessible. That also means it’s increasingly harder for new comers to break through even if they have the talent, but not the network. For most of us, we put out our best efforts and best work in hopes that it’ll pay off…maybe it will, but there’s that possibility it won’t. This is where certifications and programs like Mastered can make all the difference in the world. Mastered is an online talent program specializing in the fashion sector and at its helm are industry superstars like Nick Night, Tim Blanks, and Katie Hillier.

Here at Zanita Studio, we believe that dreams come true especially where talent already rises. We strive to inspire, excite, and push you so we’ve already gotten our hands wet at Mastered.

This is what our very own fashion photography mogul, Zanita, has to say while she’s currently enrolled in Photography: Mastered with Nick Knight:

“The program is really about finding the right tools to discover and refine your own aesthetic. We also get a lot of advice about the professional side – detailed insights as to what agents or clients are expecting. The class is online so there are TONS of engaging videos, all featuring highly revered industry pros. It’s self-managed so there’s a lot of flexibility (I know I need to go back and catch up on more elements when I have free time). Another invaluable asset is the community. I was apprehensive with all the students at first, but being able to follow alongside everyone else’s projects has been an amazing learning process. Once a project has been submitted, I’m guaranteed one industry professional will critique it, but with all the other students commenting, you really have access to various opinions, many of whom I respect because the quality of their work is so good. Overall, the program is really like no other I’ve seen online. It’s really interactive with loads of tools and advice for you to create your own professional journey.”

The-Fey-3
Zanita’s First Project for Mastered With Nick Knight

Susan has just been accepted into Writing: Mastered with Tim Blanks and here are her preliminary thoughts:

“I’m usually always suspicious of these kinds of programs. However, the application process turned out to be a bit intense, requiring a written statement and in-depth phone interview where they ensured my intentions were clear. They’re not just trying to take anyone’s money, they’re really selective, only wanting the cream of the crop. I’m impressed with the agenda so far and excited to be able to pitch to real-life editors…this means I have the chance to be published (WOW!). I’m also excited to dive into the creative process of these masterminds. The class starts in February, but you can still apply – a bigger review to come, I promise!”

For you aspiring accessories designers and jewelry makers out there, they offer an accessories program (Accessories: Mastered with Katie Hillier) that gives you the chance to present to buyers, editors, and designers – all very surreal opportunities.

So invest in yourself, invest in a network, and build your resources – go from amateur to pro.

Three Reasons to Exercise on Christmas Day

0
0

The New Year is creeping up on us and I bet you’re already starting to think about your goals and objectives for the following year! But, Christmas comes first and sometimes we get a touch of jingle fever to stop exercising and start relaxing! Relaxing is a must but there’s no reason you can’t keep up with your health as it’s a priority too.

Here are 3 reasons why you should exercise on Christmas day! You won’t regret it … I promise :)

nike

It’s good for you

We all know that getting your body moving is not only good for your health but also your mentality. This is the perfect way to set your mood up for the special day so why give up on Christmas? Get up, get sweaty, have some fun, and try to get the family involved as well!

It will make you smile

Exercise may be hard while you’re doing it but I am 100% sure when you finish, you’ll be smiling and feeling on top of the world! It will release those wonderful endorphines and can only add to the Christmas cheer! Switch out your normal workout music for upbeat Christmas tunes…sounds pretty perfect to me!

Avoid the post-Christmas binge guilt

Christmas is full of good food, wine, and treats and I, for sure, will be one to consume copious amounts of all that good stuff just like you should too – SO smash out a quick session and get a good sweat on to combat those negative “oh I ate too much thoughts”.

Have a very Merry Christmas and be sure to try and fit some of that good ol exercise in! 😛

The Ultimate Gluten Free Frangipane, Peach Tart

AA1A4593

benChristmas is just around the corner, literally next week, and I cannot wait! I leave for my ‘holiday’ this Saturday. It’s a quote unquote holiday because I will most likely spend it blogging/working.

Today, I decided to turn to my trusty Frangipane tart recipe. It is one of my all time favourite Christmas tarts and is the perfect ending to any meal. I realised that I knew nothing much about the origins of the tart and why it is called a frangiane tart. Here’s a few interesting things I found out about this classic treat.

Frangipane is the filling of this tart and is one of the most traditional French patisseries. It is associated with Christmas thanks to its warm and nutty flavours. Made using butter, sugar, ground almonds, and eggs, it takes on a sweet nutty flavour, which has a similar scent to the frangipani tree. The word frangipane originates from a man named Marquis Muzio Frangipani who invented a perfume used to scent hand gloves. The scent was extracted from a tropical American tree or shrub called Plumeria rubra. The frangipani is an actual plant in the same family as the Plumeria rubra. The perfume made from the tree, resembles the scent of the flower that grows from it.

Interesting right – a tart named after a tree with a similar scent. That very tree is named after a man who invented a perfume. I guess you learn something new everyday right?

AA1A4559

Now let me tell about the actual frangipane tart that I have prepared today. When the frangipane filling cooks in the oven it turns from a silky and creamy paste to a crumbly textured sponge. The lightness of the batter allows for it to rise further in the oven and take on an airy consistency, which melts in the mouth as it is eaten. It sits comfortably inside homemade pastry, which is gluten free. To balance out the sweetness of the filling, I’ve added peaches. They bring a tart flavour to the otherwise sweet pudding. You could use other fruits like plums, nectarines or apricots – really any fruit of that family should work just fine. It is topped with a generous dusting of sweet icing sugar.

AA1A4554

Gluten Free Frangipane, Peach Tart

Makes 1 large tart

Ingredients:

Pastry crust:

  • ¾ cups, chilled, chopped butter
  • ¾ cups castor sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups gluten free flour

Filling:

  • 2 cling peaches
  • 70g room temperature butter
  • 100g castor sugar
  • 100g ground almonds
  • 1 whole egg
  • 1 egg white

AA1A4546Method:

Pastry crust:

Place the pastry crust ingredients into a bowl. Mix together until dough forms. Wrap in plastic wrap and place to rest in the fridge for 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius and grease a 23cm round tart baking tin with butter.

Once the dough has rested, remove from the refrigerator and divide into two equal pieces.

Place one half onto a clean floured (gluten free flour) surface and the other half back into the refrigerator. Using a rolling pin, roll out the piece that is on the floured surface. Roll it out about the same size as your baking dish. Place into your baking dish and spread across the sides of the dish with your fingers. You want the pastry to be as thin as possible. Using a sharp knife, remove any pastry that hangs over the sides of the dish.AA1A4527

Poke the base with a fork a few times to help any air bubbles escape. Place a sheet of baking paper over the pastry and pour some baking beans or rice into it. Place into the oven and leave to bake for 10-15 minutes. This is called blind baking. It prepares the base for the filling so that it doesn’t become soggy once baked together with the filling. Remove from the oven, discard the baking paper, and you can save the beans for your next pastry bake.AA1A4532

Filling:

Slice the peaches in half. Remove the pips then slice each half into eighths. Push the pieces off to one side.

Cream the butter and castor sugar until light and fluffy. Add the ground almonds and continue mixing until all is well combined.

Add the whole egg and egg white to the mixture and continue mixing until a creamy light batter forms.

Assembly:

Pour the filling into the baked pastry crust and spread across the base of the tin. Arrange your peaches over the filling.AA1A4539

Place the tart into the oven and leave it to bake for 20-25 minutes. By that time it will turn into a light golden brown colour. Remove from the oven and serve warm with a dusting of icing sugar and a dollop of cream, ice cream, or a healthier alternative like plain yogurt.

Happy Baking!

5 Gorgeous Trends You Need To Know Before Shopping For Party Season

Party season is already here! Goodness, time flies...
glitter sania claus demina dress ganni zanita

I don’t think I’ve had as many ‘I got a closet full of clothes but nothing to wear’ moments as I have this month…

…boy it’s bad. This year, I’ve decided to be a bit more ahead of myself and do some party shopping (how fun though, seriously?!) and so went through the internet. The results: a not too sad bank account (gotta love all the affordable gorgeous pieces out there), a very happy closet, and this list of 5 party trends you can have in mind when shopping for the holidays this season.

Also, I got a question that I’d love for you to answer in the comment section below: What is your absolute favourite party song(s) this year? Please share so we can all make the best playlist of 2015 for New Year’s Eve!! I think I gotta admit Hotline Bling got me dancing a lot but also excited about Missy Elliott’s new single (and video!) WTF! Ok your turn!! ♥

Moving on: All you need to know before shopping for the fun times December has to offer:

1. Velvet

When I think of the velvet trend, the first thing that comes to mind is a pair of Dolce & Gabbana velvet slingbacks I’ve been craving forever now. Gorgeous! Also, red velvet Chanel bags, blue velvet suits, and green velvet dresses is what you’ll see everywhere.

Anywho, velvet is really on the radar again and here are a few goodies I picked for you:

2. Statement Earrings

This one is still going strong. Statement earrings just really have the most glamorous effect and I have lost count on how many of these I own. What about you? Did you try it yet? Trust me, it’s one of the best conversation starters at any party! The size doesn’t matter too much, as long as they really stand out.

3. Flared Arm Sleeves

Also known as trumpet arm sleeves – this trend has been growing a lot lately. Probably as a result of the 70’s bonanza we’ve had going on for the past year or two. Over the summer, it was all bohemian and now this style appears in all kinds of party pieces. I personally LOVE this trend. It’s very party appropriate!

4. Lace Up Details

..on all kinds of clothes and accessories really! Lace up shoes are really high up on the haute list right now and we just can’t get enough of it. Also this detail looks gorgeous when it appears on dresses and tops. Take a look:

5. Cut Outs

We’ve seen the cutouts as holes on different kinds of clothing in the past year but what’s new is that these holes are now covered with transparent fabrics such as organza and tulle. Such as in the outfit I’m wearing on the photo in the cab (I was on my way to the Guldknappen 2015 gala hosted by Damernas Värld here in Stockholm). Wanna wear it again for NYE!

How You Can End 2015 With a Bang!

How You Can End 2015 With a Bang!

The year is quickly coming to a close and with Christmas making an entrance in just a few more days, the New Year will be here before you know it. That being said, have you done anything lately to ensure you’ll finish off the year strong?

All the small things you’ve been putting off – time to tackle them now. And all those goals you made back in January can’t possibly be checked off, but it’s ok…can’t mope over what’s already been done. It’s only natural that we fall behind a smidge or into the temptation of indulging in that no-good stuff we promised ourselves not to about 12 months go. However, what’s important is that you pick up where you left off and keep it going. With such few days left in the year, here’s a simple 3-step guide on how you can end 2015 with a bang!

#1 Make the little things right.

What little baggage do you not want to carry into the new year? Take care of those low-hanging fruits using the remaining days you have off. Clearing your plate now means you can make time for #2 and #3 below as well as start 2016 fresh. Things like changing your oil, filing those excess bits of paperwork, and squeezing in that last doctor’s appointment – scrap them as quickly as you can along with any minor nuances that pop up along the way. They’re not worth piling on your “need-to-do” list as that will only deplete the mental capacity you could use elsewhere.

#2 Assess your situation.

Aside from the little things, this is also a good time to focus on the big stuff. By now, you have a pretty good idea of how the year went for you, but you’re probably not thinking too much about it. Time to start that self-reflection so set aside a day or a few hours (before Christmas) to really marinate on the fruits of your efforts. Are you happy with where you are and what you did? If there was one thing you had really hoped to achieve, but didn’t quite make the mark, what can you do to amend the situation? Remember, successful people never fail, they re-assess and re-play.

#3 Start now!

We’ve all heard that time is now and there’s so much truth to it despite being an overused, boring phrase. If there’s something you really want to accomplish or need to finish, there is no reason to wait for the new year or until after Christmas. Start now. Your beginning doesn’t have to be a full on sprint, but start small with what you have. By the time 2016 comes around, you’ll already be in the right mindset to kick ass.

The Ultimate Day to Night Transformation

0
0

This time of the year is inundated with parties, potlucks, and late nights from the pre-Christmas celebrations all the way through New Years. And I don’t know about you, but I’m all for looking the part during these night outs, starting with my favorite makeup looks! However, this can seem unachievable when you’re working from dawn til dusk. By the time you’re done with work, it’s likely that you’re overworked and too exhausted to even get dressed. But nope, we can make it easy. Let’s make magic happen – from fresh face to smoldering vixen in less than 10.

FRESH FACED

The Ultimate Day to Night Transformation

Tips to get your day started:

– If you know you’re going out after work, keep your day makeup light in layers so you can build the intensity later.
– Follow the rules HERE for a lasting base.
– Keep your morning eyeshadow/liner in the same color family as the look you plan on wearing at night so you can blend seamlessly.
– With that said, one swipe of color across the lid is good enough.
– If you can’t do without eyeliner, line your eyes with a matte black eyeshadow instead (it’s soft and subtle, but still adds definition).
– Dusty, rosy cheeks + lips = FRESH.
– One coat of mascara is sufficient for the day and you can skip the lower lashes – keep it simple.

1. Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream | 2. Laura Mercier Foundation Primer | 3. Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua Foundation | 4. Lancome Maquicomplet Concealer | 5. YSL Touche Eclat | 6. Laura Mercier Caviar Stick | 7. Mac Carbon Eyeshadow | 8. Tarte Exposed Blush | 9. Dior Creme de Rose Lip Balm

SMOLDERING VIXEN
The Ultimate Day to Night Transformation

Onto the transformation:

– Whoever said smokey eyes and bold lips can’t be worn together can forget it. Go all out (bold brows included).
– Gel eyeliner is the easiest to use when up against lashes already coated in mascara.
– Line the inner rim of your eyes ALL the way around.
– An eyeshadow palette with versatile colors is your best bet – light, shimmery colors can double up as highlighter while the darker colors can be blended in to create a perfect smoldering effect.
– Defined cheekbones + smokey eyes never fail to startle. And now, you can pile on the mascara.
– Nothing freshens you up like a glorious spritz of Chloe.

1. Urban Decay Naked Palette | 2. Mac Fluidline – Blacktrack | 3. Anastasia Brow Wiz | 4. Benefit They’re Real Mascara | 5. Nars Matte Lip Pencil – Cruella | 6. Kevyn Aucoin The Sculpting Powder | 7. Nars Orgasm Blush | 8. Roses de Chloe |

Some might say looking into direct sunlight is ill advised, but fashion editorials know no pain.

151030_Glamour_ZanitaWhittington_sh02_29688v2It’s all for the cause – and I’m not one to complain, especially when I’m likely spending a third of the year hunched like Golum over a Mac (my precioussss) and staring dreamily into the neon lit screen. Sometimes a little sun can be good for the constitution, to reinvigorate the sense – and though I’ve had ample opportunities to pose up a storm in magazines throughout my modelling career, these days it’s a different kind of achievement entirely.

I found myself hesistant to be decisive when it came to styling this piece – modelling comes naturally to me and therefore being asked about my opinion does not! I also have a hard enough time deciding what to have for breakfast or captioning my latest foodsta-gram (#cornfritter?) without making calls about what outfit to wear in one of the USA’s biggest magazines.

Thankfully we have our friends JW Andersen and Cynthia Rowley to ease the decision making process.

Not to mention photographic super talent David Gubert whose work I’ve been a fan of since I discovered the wonders of fashion imagery. Love his high impact style and the way he captures feminine energy.

Screen Shot 2015-12-18 at 8.04.56 amIf you’re US based don’t forget to look out for the latest issue of Glamour magazine to catch the full article, which includes all my advice for getting the best out of a photograph.

Wrap Up Your Presents the Right Way

AA1A4322

benAmong many other chores at home, I am the designated gift wrapper. It is my mom’s absolute worst thing to do ever. When it comes to covering our schoolbooks at the end of each year, she pays someone to do it for her. I’m not mad about the job either. I think that my mom asked me to do it once and I did it so easily that she decided to hand the job over to me. Most of the time, I don’t do anything special like most people with fancy wrapping paper and expensive ribbons. All I simply do is tie a piece of string around the gift and hand it over to my mom. She thinks it’s great, but I just think it’s a fast solution to a unnecessary decorative exercise.
For this year’s Christmas presents, I wanted to make my gift wrapping a little more special while sticking with the “save the trees and recycle paper” idea. I turned to newspaper, something that we all have lying around somewhere. It’s most certainly not an extravagant solution, which makes it even better. I wanted to give it my own spin and so I made a little piece of abstract expressionist art with some black ink and some water. I felt like I was able to express my inner emotions and hidden away feelings through the making of it. I decorated it with my usual string but added a few additional decorative plants that spread Christmas vibes into our hearts and souls. Who would have thought that making your own wrapping paper would be so fun!

Christmas wrapping idea

You will need

  • Black ink
  • Water
  • Newspaper
  • String or twine
  • twigs of Christmassy plants (use plants that dry well)
  • presents

AA1A4285

Method:

Mix some black ink with a little water in a cup. Lay your newspaper sheets out on a working surface. Pour little drops of the ink and water mixture onto the newspaper. Move the newspaper around which will cause the ink to spread across the page. Leave to dry.

Once the newspaper has dried, wrap your presents. Tie some string or twine around the present and add a twig into the knot for a final decorative finish.

The Dos & Don’ts of Making a Successful Career Change

0

7 Quick Tips to Changing Your Career PathNo offense, but we’re not surprised if you ended up in a position that’s making you miserable. It’s an unfortunate, almost inevitable plight as a young adult. We’ve been there ourselves and understand the angst of waking up and heading to a place that drags you down day after day. Fortunately, there’s much to learn from those who have mastered the skill of moving gracefully from one job to another. Though we can’t guarantee overnight victory in following our tried and true dos & don’ts of a successful career change, we can assure you, there’s a way. Let’s get started…

Do

– Take a step back and analyze your life.

You really need to become intimate with yourself and understand what’s important to you. Take a look at your lifestyle and think about what you value, where your priorities are, and what constitutes an ideal career for you. Are you willing to give up financial security or take on a demanding work schedule? Be realistic with what you find. Your assessment may require outside perspective so don’t be afraid to ask for opinions from those you respect.

– Try new things.

It’s important to understand the kind of career you want so exploring different fields can be extremely helpful. Now that you know the struggle of changing careers, do your best to get it right the second time. Try as many new and different things as you can before making a final decision. If you’re unable to get first-hand experience, interview or shadow someone in the field.

– Amplify the skills necessary for that next step.

You can’t just expect to get hired in an industry you’re not familiar with. Most companies want to hire people with experience…and now you’re probably thinking about that awful cycle of “No one will hire me because I don’t have enough experience, but I can’t get the experience because no one will hire me”. Do your research and focus on activities that will build on the skills relevant to the job you want. For instance, if you know you want to break into fashion journalism, write your heart out. Because of today’s competitive work place, be prepared to double the effort in order to put up a good fight against those who do have the experience.

– Build a network.

We pound this over and over only because it’s true – it’s all about who you know so get connected with people from different industries, backgrounds, and all ages. The web makes it very possible so use it to your advantage. Make it known that you’re looking to switch and tailor all introductions/communications to the person you’re connecting with. A position can easily open up with a kind reference.

Don’t

– Give up.

Changing careers is not an easy task and can take years. You’ll be compelled to throw up the white flag, but no matter how hard it gets, don’t. Nothing good ever comes easy so tough it out and keep dishing out the work.

– Be afraid of stepping down.

Sometimes, moving into a new career requires you to step down – this means work taking a pay cut, working under someone younger and less experienced than you, or even reverting back to the days of entry-level. If you’ve taken a good look at your lifestyle and the non-negotiables, this should not be an issue. It’s a part of the process.

– Jump into emptiness.

It’s easy to end up in a new position feeling the same way you did about your current one so don’t just take a blind leap of faith and hope for the best.

– Wait too long.

The worst thing you can do is wait so long to make the change your life needs that you end up spiteful with where you are. This will only prompt you to run away, most likely into another job you hate, or make you unsuccessful in your chase because of unhappiness, stress, and anger.

Here’s why I got into this business.

For the love of fashion – and all that’s creative in personal style. An outward expression through personal aesthetic that can change with your mood, the seasons, and days of the week. Having a unique sense of style speaks volume about one’s confidence too! Which is why I was delighted when Avenue 32 approached me – because of their wonderfully curated store filled with hard-to-find pieces that suit anyone with a mind for original and items that make a statement – those that are to be treasured in your wardrobe.

I’m so proud to have reached the point where I’m creating these editorials that really represent my vision. The biggest part of it is being able to incorporate these incredible outfits – each as a special masterpiece in its own way. I’ve always dreamt of becoming an actress when I was younger but I feel like my work as a model satisfies that itch as I’m working into a character. Might sound a little crazy… I sometimes refer to myself in third person as model because detaching allows me to let go of insecurities and really dive in a particular mood and story fearlessly without risk.  So here we have a ‘London Belle’, aloof with a wild spirit, who does things her own way and sees the beauty in all things, loves garden parties and pink champagne, folk music, crochet – she doesn’t have Facebook and rides a bike everywhere…

I hope you like this little story I created in collaboration with Avenue 32. Don’t miss checking out this incredible online store – or our first post which includes an interview with inspiring Owner and Entrepreneur Roberta Benteler.

The Most Important Lessons I Learned in 2015

b33cb6aae97f0287a4f04d2d6e4a5275I’m one devoted to acting in retrospect so it’s no surprise I’ve already rounded up my favorites lessons from this year. Life, as we know it, comes with ups & downs and I certainly have had my fair share of struggles. However, 2015 marks an especially distinct year for many reasons – the best being able to experience and appreciate the full circle of the lessons below. Although they’re far from anything revolutionary, they’ve definitely hit the sweet spot this year and if you’re unable to say the same,

I hope some day in the near future, you’re able to reflect back on this post and think “ahhh, that’s what she meant”…

#1 Stop victimizing yourself.

No one is against you. Life is not working to make you miserable. Stop feeling sorry for yourself, stop making excuses. The mind can be a scary place, but it’s all in your perspective – you have a choice. Believe in yourself, your ability, and take the wheel.

#2 Don’t rely on others.

I admit, I’m a people pleaser. I want to make everyone happy and that is not realistic. I’ve always felt a sense of security or value in making other people happy, but guess what? Making people happy makes no sense if you’re not happy. Don’t rely on other people to bring you fulfillment or increase your self-worth and if you think you’re finding it in your friendships or intimate partners, you’ll realize soon how quickly that dissipates. The root of happiness and fulfillment starts within yourself.

#3 Risk is necessary for growth.

Many people are unwilling to take risks in their life out of being afraid and I’m just here to echo that if it doesn’t scare you, you’re probably not doing anything worthwhile. All you need is to do is set your feet on the course that makes you uncomfortable, anxious, or timid. If you’re constantly doing the same thing day in and day out, nothing is ever going to change. The biggest risk I took this year was dropping the benefits and security of my corporate job. Some call me irresponsible and I’m fearful every day of the hazards that may pop up, but I can’t worry about that otherwise I’ll never grow…instead, I’ll deal with it as it comes.

#4 Be Afraid of Stagnance.

It doesn’t matter how slowly you’re evolving…it might take months and even years, but something major will come out of it. If there’s only one thing in life you should be afraid of, that is stagnance – being still, never growing, never doing anything new. The lesson here – always work towards something.

#5 Be Patient.

Don’t be so quick to give up. When I started my blogging journey 5 years ago, I’d constantly think this is such a waste of time and energy…I saw no purpose in what I was doing, but it gave me something to do, something to learn so I kept at it. If you ask me now whether I thought I’d ever be employed in the dynamic “blogging industry”, I’d have said “HELL NO..I don’t have the personality, resources, or network…hell I live in a not-so-fashionable city”.

But here I am today, under one of the most respected fashion bloggers in the world…(so humbled and grateful to be here through the course of wasteful weekends that turned out not to be so wasteful after all). Always work hard and be patient – you don’t want to spend your entire life in the wrong place.

XO,

– Susan

Surf wear has long been part of the Australia’s style identity  – and iconic brand Mambo will always been first to mind for it’s authenticity and personality. I grew up in a small coastal town, where surf culture was a part of life – so I felt more than a little bite of nostalgia when I was approached by the brand to be a part of their latest campaign.

The coolest thing about Mambo is the way they support new and upcoming artists – this season they’re working with Anya Brock, an artist with a background in fashion working for the likes of Christopher Kane and Richard Nicoll and running her own label before returning to her artistic roots, paint brush in hand.

I hope you love these spirited swimwear designs by Mambo and Anya Brock – modelled by super babe and fellow influencer Maia Cotton.

The Perfect Golden Look for the Festive Season

dolce-and-gabbana-beauty-gold-gloss-christmas-special

I’ve only begun to appreciate the fun of styling for the holidays since I’ve lived in Sweden.

Perhaps it’s because in Australia, Christmas and New Years are just added bonuses for the summer. And beyond the odd, tacky themed t-shirt, we’re not going out of our way to enjoy thematic dressing. In the Northern hemisphere, Christmas and New Years are like beacons of hope in the dark winter so giving that little extra effort to make the time special is worth it. This season, Dolce & Gabbana enlisted me to share this holiday inspired look – all sophisticated, gold and glamour. Something new for me and much requested.

I hope you like this look I created – smokey and shimmering for some Yuletide glamour or anything else fabulous you might be celebrating!

All Makeup: Dolce and Gabbana

How to Start the New Year the Right Way

0

For a lot of people, New Years day is a blow off. It’s usually a day of sleeping in, not feeling super fresh, probably one spent drinking lots of water and watching reruns of popular TV shows. Many are perhaps wishing they didn’t do what they did the night before and starting the new year with regrets. That’s definitely not the way to start the year if you want to dominate!!!!

Here are 5 ways to stay on top of your game and start the New Year with a bang!

new year

Don’t go to bed too late

Stay up to bring in the New Year but take mental note that your body needs rest and if you want to feel good at the start of the year, you need some good shut eye time.

Don’t wake up hungover

Have a few drinks but remember water is the answer to stay hydrated. And don’t have so much alcohol that you’ll ruin the entire next day. Know your limit!

Exercise

Wake up and go for a run or collaborate with a friend to workout on the oval or at the beach! Trust me you will feel on top of the world. Starting the new year with some exercise is a great idea.

Watch the first sunrise of the year and take 5 minutes to be grateful

Don’t worry what time you went to bed (I advocate a mandatory mid-day nap anyway :). Set your alarm and get up to watch the sunrise. It’s pretty darn magical. Then spend time thinking about the past year and write down 3 things you’re grateful for and also reflect on 3 things you’re grateful for in this moment. It doesn’t need to be life changing, it’s just important to stop and appreciate some of the amazing things you’ve experienced, received, or achieved.

Setting Goals

It can be one thing that you want to work on, something you want to achieve, or something that is going to drive you. Setting goals is a great way to have a clear idea on what you want to do in the year coming. It will give you drive and motivation.

Make sure they’re SMART:

  • Specific – define exactly what you want to achieve so you know when you’ve done it.
  • Measurable – come up with a may to measure you progress and know when you’ve completed it.
  • Attainable – be realistic… make sure it’s a stretch but still possible.
  • Relevant – Make sure it makes sense in the rest of your life and is something you really want to focus on.
  • Time-bound – You gotta set a realistic time frame that can keep you working hard.

Hope you all had an amazing 2015! But bring it on 2016 – MAKE IT YOUR YEAR!!

The One Thing You’re Doing That Kills Productivity

0

b7a2dbcd38121c958ceb68fe707a6edbWe know this sounds so contradictory because we’ve done nothing but promote multitasking in manifesting a successful lifestyle, but it turns out this very habit we’ve all been raised on could be the one thing that kills our productivity. From a big picture perspective, multitasking makes sense – you’re a mom and you go to work or you work full-time and freelance on the side. But if you think about your day-to-day functions, multitasking may not be the best approach, quietly leading you to inefficiency.

Now is the time to start monotasking – focusing on one thing singlehandedly until you’re done (be sure to make that one of your resolutions for 2016) – and here are three things that are guaranteed to happen while you’re at it:

Focus

As we enabled multitasking to control our lives over the years, our attention span has become shorter and shorter…almost like we get the jitters if we can’t do more than one thing at a time. It’s a hard and bad habit to break, but time to make some shifts. Doing only one thing truly allows you drown in it, learn and understand it, and most importantly, get it done. Ever notice how you tend to forget or miss out on something when you’re in a meeting but checking your e-mail (or Instagram)? Or texting while driving, which just forces you to the side of the road? And even listening to music while working – you’re singing along not really working…Good bye to those days.

Efficiency

Monotasking promises focus, which positively correlates with efficiency. Focusing on one thing from start to finish means you’ll get it done faster. You may even find it beneficial to break up your tasks into chunks and only dedicating a limited time allotment to them until you’re finished. This is especially helpful for those of us who have limited attention spans. No more social media or coffee breaks every 5 minutes. You’ll learn quickly that the full completion of one thing will give you the confidence and energy to transition to the next.

Quality

Alongside increased focus and efficiency is the chief: Quality. Doing only one thing means you value what you’re working on, it’s a priority, and it’s significant. With this notion in mind, you’ll begin to approach your work seriously and as a result, the outcome of what you do improves naturally.

Keep in mind that monotasking doesn’t mean halting all other happenings around you. It’s all about removing distractions (i.e. your phone) and placing emphasis on one thing – one thing only.

We just rounded up our favorite cold weather looks here, but we mustn’t forget about what’s coming: Spring/Summer. Though we know winter dressing typically brings out higher interest through the ability to play more with textures and layers, but the sun also extracts fun in its own ways. Warm weather dressing can be characterized by color, varying hemlines, better shoe alternatives, and a myriad of fun options. The overall lessons from our summer outfits here:

  • No color is quite happier than RED in the summer
  • Sneaker pairings with all ensembles perfect a cool, casual outfit
  • There is no better time to experiment with many different prints
  • Opt for denim to exude that carefree, but still chic, 90s Calvin Klein vibe
  • You can’t go wrong with a light jacket of some sort – light layers work during the warmer months too!
  • Sandals galore from flats to heels, bring ’em all out
  • Hemline play peaks interest

We hope you enjoyed our sunny day outfits as much as we did. Be prepared for what the sun brings in 2016!
