Christmas Table Inspiration Station

I can’t believe it’s that time of year again (the best time of year in my opinion)!

AA1A3618 copyAt the end of every year, my family and I go stay at my auntie and uncle’s (who also have children the same ages as my sister and me) house a few hours drive out of Cape Town. They live in Singapore and so this is one of the only times of year that we get to see them and spend time with them. We spend Christmas, and new years with them, but this year only Christmas. My auntie, as well as anyone who isn’t swimming in their warm sunny pool or relaxing on the beach, always make Christmas dinner. This year she’s given us, the children of the family, which are about 4 teenagers including me, the task of making Christmas dinner. Her standards are quite high so it would be fair to say that this is quite the daunting task, but we can do it (I hope). I am the only one in the group who knows how to cook, so it should be an interesting experience and hopefully my cousins learn a thing or two about food. I have sort of taken on the role of leading the troops to Christmas dinner success (without telling anyone). This brings me to the purpose of this post. I put all of these table-setting ideas together to present to my auntie in a neatly bound portfolio to propose my ideas. Just joking, she’s not that strict. I’ve simply put this together to make Christmas dinner an easier process for all. We, the teenagers, won’t have to leave it until the very last minute to decide on how the table should be set because I’m sure that we will have other things to worry about – like a blog post on zanita.com for inspiration.

table-setting_2

I have come up with 5 different Christmas table-setting ideas. Each is uniquely different and has its own personality, if that is possible for a table setting. Please note, I have only set these settings up for one person, not because I will be spending Christmas alone but because I only have one of every plate and cup and spoon etc in my props collection. I hope they inspire you to create a Christmas table setting of your own!

moody table

This table setting includes a dark tablecloth to create a moody, cozier effect. I folded a dishcloth over a large plate and topped with a smaller side plate. Then I place my cutlery on the side of the dishcloth and a small branch of a fern tree to add a Christmassy effect. I tied a name tag onto each branch using string, then sprinkled the table with sea salt to look like snow. Finally I added an assortment small jars filled with plants.

table-setting_1

For this setting, I’ve gone with a white tablecloth. This plating is what I like to call the all in one method; everything is in one place. I’ve covered a large pate with a dishcloth, topped it with a side plate and placed a drinking glass in the centre. I’ve added a plant to the mix for an extra decorative edge.

table-setting_3

This setting is pretty simple and similar to the idea above. I used a blue ceramic plate, a copper side plate and a glass bowl. I’ve added some flowers and candles on the side.

table-setting_5

table-setting_4

This next one is also very simple. I’ve arranged a ceramic bowl in a wooden plate. On the left side sits a dishcloth rolled up and held together with string. I tied a twig of a plant into the string.

table-setting_6

Finally, this one is for a white Christmas. A simple arrangement of white ceramic plates, dishcloths, plants, cutlery and clear drinking glasses.

table-setting_7

Happy table setting!

7 Tips to Success When Working From Home

How to Prepare for Success When Working From HomeFor the last 5-1/2 years, I’ve only ever worked in a corporate setting – you know that cookie-cutter office that puts you in a life-size box and leaves you there for 8 hours a day. Well…that was up until yesterday. Having the ability to work from home now has really forced me to sit down and think about how I will structure and carve out a new work life. And though it’s only been a few days on the job, I already feel the good vibes sinking in and here’s how you can too:

#1 Have a clearly defined workspace.

A few weeks before I started working from home, I knew I needed to have a space dedicated to my work – something free from distractions like the bed, television/radio noise, and the kitchen – just somewhere I could actually concentrate. A dedicated workspace can mean something different for everyone and that’s the best thing about working from home. There’s so much flexibility so take a few minutes to think about how you work best and build a workspace to accommodate those needs. It could be an enclosed room or maybe it’s a little nook somewhere – it just needs to be defined. This is your focus haven and you automatically know when you step into it, there’s a tackling of to-dos.

#2 Feel Week 1 out.

Working from home is one of the best feelings ever and if you get to do it once or twice, no biggie, but if it becomes your full-time place of employment, adjustments must be made. Don’t expect operations to function smoothly from the get go. Let Week 1 ride out and think about what’s working and what’s taking away from your productivity, then you can correct the course and move along. I’m still learning and trust me, lots of adjustments in the works.

#3 Separate work + home.

There will be dishes in the sink, laundry that needs to be folded, and countless errands to run, but don’t think about that during your “work hours”. Despite being at home, you need to set time aside for those chores. You might also need to remind everyone else in your house that you’re not really home…you’re at work.

#4 All gadgets in place.

Whatever you need to get your job done, make sure you put it in your workspace. For me, that means pencils and notebooks, cellphone, computer, planner, tablet, and post-its all within arms reach. I’m never without these.

#5 Sans Pajamas.

Still get up and get dressed. Pajamas equate to lounge, which does not equate to work. You never know when the phone will ring for a conference call. Do yourself the favor and be prepared.

#6 Stay Organized.

You really need to be a master of organizing, scheduling, and managing deadlines as this will allow you to stay on track, minimize distractions, and most importantly, make you successful. If your work involves a lot of papers, you might want to invest in a filing cabinet and some folders – really maximize all your resources and tech gadgets to keep yourself in check.

#7 Communicate.

Whether you’re working for someone or with your own clients, be professional and stay on top of your relationships. These people deserve your attention (during working hours of course) so be sure to communicate as much as you need to. The web is a godsend for us remote workers – touching base could be as simple as an e-mail, text message, instant chat, or phone call.

Why Getting Older Isn’t so Bad

7bd80eacbe3d72c7ec6d29c3b47c54b8

Life is funny…

prior to being 18 years old, we couldn’t wait to become legal because we thought it meant freedom, but little did we understand, that it comes with much responsibility and hardwork. And even when we learned that lesson by 18, we couldn’t wait to be 21 – ahhh we can finally purchase alcohol and get into the bars without Xs on our hands (in the states).

What’s next after that?

Seems like life is a series of what’s next…so let’s see, you can rent a car on your own by 25 and that’s about the end. The other thing is you might get hit with an episode of the quarter-life crisis – what an eye-opener. We’ve been so busy focusing on having fun and waiting for what’s next that some of us lost track of where we were going and now it seems like there’s not enough time to play catch up. I know the feeling all too well. When I turned 25, it hit me that I was becoming older every year after and frankly, I was afraid…it became worse that the months crept up even faster. But I’m learning to embrace the aging process and recognize the many pluses that come with it. By the time this weekend is over, I’ll be closer to 30, but I know better now that getting older isn’t so bad and here’s a reminder why if you need it yourself:

– You’re Wiser.

We all have made poor, embarrassing decisions at a time in our life – something so bad that we wish could just disappear from our memory. But that’s what those years are for…365 days in a year multiplied by your age becomes thousands of days. In that timeline, I’m sure you’ve learned much from your faults, relationships, and failures and you’ll carry these lessons on for the rest of your life. You learn what you need to avoid, how to say “NO”, and where you need to improve. We absolutely do become wiser with age.

– You’re more comfortable with yourself.

Those days of low self-esteem were the worst…feeling like you’re not pretty or skinny enough is a constant battle that eventually fades. You lose the pressure of succumbing to what society thinks looks “good”. You’re more confident in your decisions as a result of becoming wiser and you become more in touch with who you really are. Feeling happy with yourself is one of the best things ever, but only something most people experience with age.

– Life becomes clearer.

You understand that you have to work hard if you want something. Your goals and aspirations begin to shape out nicely because you’ve learned what you don’t want from your younger years and you’re busting ass to make shit happen. You also learn to adjust and react when life throws a curveball and your attitude accommodates those surprises with grace.

– Your relationships become more meaningful.

You find more value in your parents, your siblings, and friends who are like family. Though they have always been there, I’m sure you can recount moments of hell, fighting, and grudges, but you’ll start to forgive and let those things go because you’ve been able to experience the challenges of living yourself. You learn who loves you unconditionally and you begin to really appreciate that love.

– You appreciate life.

Life is precious…something that can disappear in the blink of an eye. By this time, you’ve lost some meaningful people and you start to realize how much you’ve taken for granted and therefore, can fully appreciate what you have and make the best of it.

Sportscraft-zanita-beach-1 copy

There’s something to be said for the ease of packing for a summer destination. Comfort is best, loose fitting, effortless. Quality is essential – nothing worse than a cheap synthetic fabric against sweaty skin!

Less is more.

Less distraction.  No laptops. No rush hour traffic. No deadlines. No emails.

I hope you all find a chance (if you need it) to capture some Summer bliss in your life in the not-to-distant future, to switch off and simplify, read and relax.  It was more than a little bit of a relief, packing for this getaway and hauling a suitcase weighing just 15kg instead of multiple cases weighing over 20! Throwing in a few light shirts and dresses – a broad rim hat and a slip on sandal. I’m working with iconic Aussie brand Sportscraft to share this breezy post, all things classic and right for warmer climes. How marvellous is the hat? A collaboration between Sportscraft and Australian artist Shilo Engelbrecht. So chic.

You can’t put a price on feeling centred. Summer loving!

5 Lip Products to Get You Through the Holiday Parties

With the arrival of December, we’ve got holiday parties in full swing and that means it’s time to get your face game strong. So whether you’re prepping for an office soiree, gift-exchange with the girls, or a romantic night out, we’ve got you covered – there’s no easier way to achieve a full-on transformation than swapping out your average lip product for something that startles. And if you’re usually playing it safe, the holidays are a perfect excuse to experiment so try one of these lippies.

#1 For My Lips but Better

I’m not the best at applying lipstick so my go-to for an easy breezy lip application is Nars Satin Lip Pencils and I’m especially a fan of Biscayne Park. It’s the perfect nude with no pink and the ideal mesh of peach and brown. It goes on buttery smooth, leaving a strong color payoff with a semi-matte finish and only a hint of gloss. This is always my lip product of choice when donning a strong smokey eye for the night and everyone around me seems to notice (and loves it as much as I do).

#2 For a Festive Pop

I shy away from red lipstick because I can’t really create that perfect crisp line so I opt for liquid lipstick instead and I absolutely adore this one by Stila in Beso. It’s super long-wearing…once it’s on and set, it doesn’t budge, which is perfect for holiday parties where you’ll be sipping on cocktails and wine throughout the night. This product dries matte, but it’s so creamy and non-drying, making it an even better option for the cold weather. The color is also super flattering on all skin tones…I love it with a winged liner – let the lips make the statement here.

#3 For Soft as Butter Lips

The Dior Creme de Rose lip balm really excels at keeping the lips moisturized and soft. For you gals who hate lip products, this one is for you…note the milky, pink tone – I actually find that it translates nicely on the lips almost creating a faux nude kind of effect. I’m on my third one…

#4 For a Hint of 90s

Newest to my growing lip stash is Mac Velvet Teddy…it’s a brown, slightly burnt sienna color that I love during this season and it pairs beautifully with all kinds of makeup looks. It’s also very reminiscent of the mauve that ruled the 90s but without the gray tones. This product is for you if you’re looking for a dusty rose that gives off more color than nude, but isn’t as loud as red or wine.

#5 For a Pop of Poppy

If you’re into that high-shine look, Laura Mercier’s Lip Glaces might just be what you need and this one in Bonbon gives off that summery poppy pink – the kind that looks like you just finished sucking on a popsicle (except with shine). It’s so feminine and flirty. You can wear this alone because there’s definitely enough color, but it can be just as beautiful layered on top of a lipstick.

The 5 Things I Regret Most

5 Things I Regret Most - Zanita Studio

Some say you shouldn’t regret, but I think part of living and enjoying life is about making mistakes and trying not to make them again.

Today, I turn 28 and I’m appalled (getting so close to 30)! So I can’t help but look back at the last 20 years and think about how far I’ve come along with the the things I didn’t do or should have done earlier. I’m an advocate of learning from other people’s mistakes because we don’t live long enough to make them all ourselves…so hopefully you garner something worthy from my small realities. Are you ready? The 5 things I regret most:

#1 Not starting sooner.

If you have any idea of what you might be interested in doing, start immediately, explore your options, and test the waters. You have nothing to worry about except yourself when you’re young – no major responsibilities nor dependents. This is your time to do something crazy and fail.

#2 Working too much.

Looking back over the last decade, the only thing I can recall doing was work…I can’t believe I spent so much time of my life working that it’s all I remember doing. Everyone around me always told me, “You have your whole life to work, why don’t you live a little?” But I was always worried…the thing is I wasn’t born privileged. I had to bust ass for everything I had from my car to insurance, phone, and education, but thinking about it now, it was senseless to put that burden on myself at such a young age. And as a repercussion, I worked my youth away all the way through college – what a waste of those golden years. There’s not much you need to worry about at 16, but damn, I was always worried. Please don’t do that to yourself.

#3 Caring too much about money.

Like point #2, I obviously worked because I was worried about money. The consequences here – I don’t have many adventures to reflect on. I had always wanted to study abroad in Japan, travel, attend university far from home, work in a creative field, but I never had the guts to because I was worried about the money. While this mindset put me in a financially sound situation today, it was at the cost of “would have been” amazing life experiences. Put me back to my early 20s and I’d give the money up to do all those things…

#4 Not keeping in touch with people.

We’re all busy and have our own roadblocks to work through so it’s easy to lose track of people. But calling someone or sending them a letter doesn’t require that much effort…it’s really sad to see how many people I’ve let go for simply not being existent in their lives. I wish I did a better job of being there…

#5 Not saving more.

I always joke that growing up, I didn’t have much so once I had my own earnings, I’d kinda just went crazy and bought whatever I wanted – that turned out to be quite a bit of junk. I wish I’d learned the value in investing earlier on and put that money to something more useful…the earnings could have been exponential by now. Bummer.

My In-Flight Beauty Essentials

Scuse’ the look of scary intense enthusiam.

I may have been overcompensating, having not slept for 20 hours, applying my travel strategy in order to combat the symptoms of switching timezones. As you read this, I’m in the throes of having to do it again LONDON/HONG KONG/SYDNEY.

If I had the time, I’d endeavour to stay in Hong Kong for some adventures and R&R – it’s such an exciting and vibrant city. At least I get a little piece of that experience flying Cathay Pacific, I can’t stress what a relief it is to know everything will run gracefully on my journey. Each time I get on the plane I suffer from a mild case of Stockholm Syndrome, I absolutely don’t want to get off! The stewards are so polite, even when I request we ‘go another lap’. I’m in my seat, I live there now. So cosy.

Something I do have a grip on – my In-flight beauty routine. If I’m not diligent I’ll end up with an incredibly dry and dull complexion, prone to breakouts. One thing thats totally essential – moisture! I hope you like my video – and apologies again for being a little bit scattered. We really filmed this a 2am in the morning from our departure!

Thanks again Cathay Pacific, such a wonderful way to fly. #lifewelltravelledCat-street-markets-plane-airport-vintage-hong-kong

Checking In: The Knit To End Them All

vera-wang-knit-chequered-bag-2Hello! I haven’t really done a decent check in with you all in some time.

I’ve been crazy busy with some exciting projects, it’s really none stop up until Christmas. Even my snapchat (I’m zanitazanita!) has been lacking – and I do love snapchat! Suddenly all my favourite bloggers have their own reality TV show.

I’ve just spent a week in London working on meetings and projects and suffering from the worst jet lag. It’s always such a bitch when I travel to a winter destination because it’s so dark, it feels like I always need to be sleeping. Throws me way off work wise – and presents it’s own challenges related to my mood. On that note, I’m feeling a little better and thanks so kindly to all of you for your generous comments of support.

Gustav and I were actually due to be living in New York right now – but have experienced delays related to Visas and the like. We’ve already rented out our apartment in Stockholm – meaning we’re homeless and shuffling from hotel to airbnb and back. Ain’t cheap! Hurry up January.

All this means more time in Australia, so I’m writing this on yet another journey between Europe and Down Under. At least it’s summer in Australia! Gustav and I are hoping to score an apartment near the beach and some vitamin D in Sydney before flying to Tasmania for one of the coolest gigs we’ve undertaken yet. I don’t want to jinx it so I won’t spill the beans yet – expect some pretty sweet Instagram updates real soon.

I’ve started reading again lately and I’m so happy about it. I always thought of watching TV shows as my relaxing escape, but reading is so much more rewarding. I’m into Fantasy Fiction – if there’s dragons and swords and elves? I’m down… anyone else out there a Fantasy Nerd?? Would love your recommendations!

Anyway, back to fashion – can we talk about this knit? It’s from Vera Wang and perhaps the most luscious thing I own. Lucky me huh? Can you tell from these images the weight of it? It’s made from some kind of satin-y threads and is deliciously warm. I wore it in Stockholm without a coat and got along just fine. I’ve since left all my other warm clothes behind because winter wardrobes are a pain to haul across continents. These Bliss and Mischief jeans have been on repeat more times than I care to admit. They’re actually the most $$$ jeans I have but wear for wear, easily worth it – so much so that I’m thinking of investing in another pair.

I’m about to board! Hope this hasn’t been too much of a drag – and hope you like these images! I’ve learnt some new editing techniques lately, for finer and richer detailing. It’s reinvigorated my love for photography.

Ways to Stay Inspired in a Job You Hate

Work is called work for a reason – it’s not really meant to be enjoyed – and that’s the unfortunate starting point for most of us before landing a gig we’re truly passionate about. But until you get there, you must weather the storm.

So how exactly are you supposed to stay focused and motivated when you’re just not feeling it, but there’s no clear exit? Despite feeling stuck, look at the bright side and focus on the little things you can do to make it that much more livable. Here are ways you can reinvent inspiration in your workplace:

#1. Reflect on where you’ve been.

Stop thinking about how much longer you have to go and what lies ahead. Instead, focus on the here & now – the journey that led you to where you are at this instance and how hard you worked for it. Remember that you need to be alive in your journey as you’re en route to the next chapter. This is a simple admonition to work hard and stay focused so you can enjoy the fruits of your efforts later.

#2. Find a mentor.

It’s always easier to stay inspired when you meet someone full of energy and inspiring. Fortunately, in any organization, there is always at least one influential person who exudes nothing but positivity. Find that person and allow them to mentor you. A mentor can help navigate you through the difficulties you encounter in your career and shine perspective where it isn’t so visible. You’ll easily absorb their wisdom and vitality. (Side Note: A mentor can be formal or informal. You can also have multiple mentors – take advantage of that.)

#3. Make new office friends.

Get out of your cube and talk to new people. You might actually meet your next BFF. You can do this through attending company-wide networking events, onsite classes, or just introducing yourself at meetings. We all know that an unpleasant work week is more tolerable when you’re surrounded by great company.

#4. Actually go to lunch.

Leave the office and run out to lunch. A quick whiff of fresh air, glimpse at nature, and contact with the sun can make all the difference. And no better way to top that off than with great food and human interaction.

#5. Start a tradition.

If you’re finding your office or team environment quite dull, spice it up a little. Celebrate each others’ birthdays with homemade cupcakes, a mini breakfast of coffee and bagels, or a sweet afternoon snack. Try a once-a-month potluck or themed apparel to get your engagement up. You might just catch yourself jumping out of bed to do your share of fun.

#6. Create an inspiring environment.

Decorate your office! What perfect timing with Christmas just around the corner. Add some gusto with photos of your loved ones, a mood board that inspires you, sentimental pieces, and decor that lifts your mood.

How To Master The Art Of Layering

$

We already heard about the fact that staying warm and stylish is all about dressing in layers…

…but not that many really talk about exactly how to do it. So I thought I would.

layering2
Layering is lots of fun and one really gets to go through a creative process while dressing! You don’t necessarily need to do this for the sake of keeping body heat, it’s also a really cool way of styling your outfits.

Anything that is wool+silk blend will keep you warm and is something you can hide underneath your outfit. Whether its stockings or a top – doesn’t matter. If you’re in a cold place, it will definitely help!

Here is a list of ‘layering recipes’ to follow that always works.

Let’s call it the cheat sheet for the art of layering!

  • White shirt + a round or v-neck sweater + jeans of any kind really + coat to throw over your shoulders. Discrete golden chain necklaces will add that final touch to your look.
  • A shirt dress + skirt that is shorter than the length of the dress on top of it. A very popular look we saw all over fashion weeks lately.
  • Another thing you could do with the shirt dress is put on a sweater on top and let it be a shirt skirt! How brilliant?
  • stockholm-fashion-week-street-style-09Wearing a leather jacket underneath your coat is a smart and cool way of layering.
  • Leather jacket underneath your vest is a classic but always gorgeous way to style your layered ensemble.
  • Turtleneck + thin silk scarf around your neck + deep v-neck spaghetti strap dress.
  • Shirt (half tucked in to your trousers) + leather jacket + bag + coat.
  • Shirt + a v-neck sweater + blazer + coat.
  • Tight turtleneck sweater + crispy shirt + a few necklaces of different lengths.

Also, wrapping your sweater around the waist is a cool way of adding details with clothes and will definitely keep your bum warm.

layering1Do you want more tips on how stay warm without compromising your style? Check this post out HERE.

I really like this Vogue China editorial from 2013. The layering ideas are so good!! Check out the full editorial HERE.

The streetstyle photos are shot by Søren Jepsen for Vogue.com/Style.com. See all the images HERE.

Do you have any other layering ideas to share with each other? Would be so much fun if you’d like to add some more to that list! Xx

Nine-west-weekend-look-1

I haven’t spent much of my life lately NOT living out of a suitcase, which complicates things because part of my job involves attempting to look as fabulous as possible each day. I’ve learnt that every piece in my suitcase needs to have a purpose – and it needs to be friends with all the other pieces. It’s got to be gorgeous. It’s got to last the distance. It’s got to be stylish as hell…. and finally it needs to be quite comfortable.

Nine-west-weekend-look-2

Maybe I shouldn’t be mentioning this in a collaboration with a shoe brand but I ain’t a ‘heels’ kind of girl. Not that I don’t LOVE heels – it’s mostly that I don’t want to have a different pair for every occasion with me. Because of the suitcase dilemma – I never usually travel with more than two pairs… Fashion Week excepted.

Enter my #Pumprockers. Sassy, sexy, versatile.
I was invited by Nine West to take part in their #Pumprockers campaign, highlighting how one great heel can take you 9 till 9 – from sunrise to set. Gotta say I’m quite the likely candidate, I love to consider myself a great re-inventor.  Also loved seeing Brazilian superstar Camilla Coehlo‘s and Actress Jamie Chung’s interpretations too – high five to my fellow digital entrepreneurs!

Thankyou to Nine West for inviting me to take part in this campaign – and hope you enjoyed my nine-till-nine looks. x

The Ultimate Accessory for London Day to Night

Zanita-Michael-Kors-8

London will always hold a steady place in my heart. It seems only fitting we shoot this project for Michael Kors Moments in this city – because of the special significance it has for me. There’s nothing like a sparkling accessory – a gorgeous gold watch-  to get you in the mood for a divine night out!

Zanita-Michael-Kors-1Of course London one of the most majestic and stunning cities in Europe – but it’s also my cultural homeland (I have convicts as ancestors and my last name is Whittington – nuff said) and a city where I first experienced a career revelation. As you might know, before I began my foray into blogworld I was working as a model. I loved my career but never really had high or longterm hopes as my agency told me, the only other place I could get work in the ENTIRE world, was Germany.

So I hauled off to Hamburg, got more work than I had ever enjoyed in my whole career and treated myself to a weekend in London, for the first time ever. With my new found confidence I additionally booked myself into a few modelling agencies for meetings – and promptly got signed to one of the best agencies in town. It was one of the most thrilling moments of my young life (I was just 21) and something I’ll never forget. London was the place I took my career into my own hands… and it was the same year I began my blog. Zanita-Michael-Kors-4

The second special moment I shared in London – my first proper date with Gustav! We first met over 2 years ago in Stockholm and had an awkward daytime date before I flew out, back to Amsterdam and onwards to NYC and the rest for Fashion Month. We had kept in touch over Whatsapp/Skype and decided to meet again in London to figure out if this was the real thing. I was treated to a Broadway show (Monty Python! Love!) and the rest is history.  While the pair of us were snapping these images around Leicester Square and Piccadilly the nostalgia kicked in and I couldn’t help laughing about our awkward first date moments… including hearing Gustav sing “Always Looks On The Brightside” very loudly and very off key during the show’s finale. The cutest.

So a special thanks to Michael Kors for teaming up with us to bring you these special London Moments, getting ready, heading out to see ‘Cats’ in Leicester Square and going shopping in London’s iconic Chelsea. I’m often having to keep my looks simple while I’m travelling – so I love taking packing a glamourous accessory or two to elevate my outfit in an elegant way.  Hope you like these pics!!

10 Exclusive Makeup Tips - Zanita Studio

I’ll just start by prefacing that I know there are TONS of resources available on the web that promise to give you unheard of makeup tips and lessons from the pros, but I can assure you, there’s at least one on my list you haven’t tried.

I swear I didn’t garner these pointers from endless hours of YouTube lurking, but rather practical lessons I learned through trials and mistakes. These are also my best kept secrets I use almost exclusively on my night outs and carry over onto others during special occasions.

Are you ready to gleam through your holiday parties? Let’s get started:

#1 For all-night, long lasting makeup..

Apply your base in thin layers starting with liquid products, moving into creams, and finally powder formulations. Think of it like this: Moisturizer, primer, liquid foundation, concealer, liquid highlighter, cream bronzer, and cream blush, and then topping everything off with its respective powder form (foundation, bronzer, blush, and highlighter). Albeit time consuming, I guarantee you budge-proof makeup that will last through the crack of dawn. It never fails me nor anyone I’ve tried it on from the driest to most oily skin types. It seems like a lot of makeup, but thin layers is key to not looking cakey.

#2 For natural luminous, glowing skin..

Mix a drop oil with your foundation and apply with damp sponge (like the beauty blender) using a dabbing motion. (Side Note: Set only the T-Zone.)

#3 For budge-proof, bold brows..

Apply eyelid primer directly onto your brows and then use your brow product of choice.

#4 For a successful strobing effect..

Apply liquid or cream highlighter to the high points of your cheeks, right above your eyebrows, on the brow bone, inner corner of your eyes, tip of your nose and the deepest part of your nose bridge, and finally, the cupids bow. And then layer your favorite powder highlighter over the same areas. Contrary to popular belief, you want to avoid the forehead (or space between your brows), entire bridge of your nose, and chin as this makes you look greasy and not radiant, especially in flash photography.

#5 For successful eyeshadow application..

Apply eye primer and eyeshadow before anything else, then remove fallout with a moisturizing eye cream.

10 Exclusive Makeup Tips - Zanita Studio

#6 For a natural false eyelash effect..

Curl your lashes and double up on your mascara (2 different formulations). Make sure you finish off with a waterproof formula.

#7 For the perfect cat eye..

Create your ideal shape with a pencil eyeliner first and sharpen any soft edges, then intensify it with gel eyeliner, and lock it in place with a waterproof liquid eyeliner. If you want to seal the deal even more or mattify your liner, trace over it with a matte black eyeshadow using an angled brush.

#8 For an immediate worn-in look..

Flawlessly apply all your makeup products and then spray all over with a facial mist. Allow it to dry on its own to create a skin-like illusion.

#9 For naturally full eyebrows..

(especially for us unfortunate gals with sparse brows) Prime your brows, then fill in your natural brow shape with brow powder or eyeshadow, and brush it out with a spoolie. Take a brow pencil and fill in any loose areas using small strokes to mimic natural hair.

#10 For immediately glowing eyes..

Apply a beige or light pink shimmery eyeshadow or cream eyeliner to the center of your lower lash line.

A Very Cherry, Orange Pudding to Get You in the Christmas Spirits

benAt the moment I am sitting at home, in my bedroom listening to Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett’s Cheek to Cheek. I tried to find some Christmas jams on Youtube, but my Internet is the slowest thing on this planet and unfortunately I have lost patience for it. I’m on a high at the moment, but I’m sure after I finished this post, I’ll crash on the couch and watch some well deserved TV. I can’t remember the last time I just simply did nothing. I finished grade 11 yesterday and after a short day of getting my exam results back I came home to make pudding! And not just any pudding, a very cherry orange zest pudding to get me in the Christmas spirits. I adapted one of my other tried and tested recipes that I have on benskitchenblog.com, it’s a Vanilla panna cotta pudding free of refined sugar, just like this one. Vanilla has got to be one of the most pleasing and subtle flavours that work well with many so many things, it simply brings out their inner beauty and elevates their flavours to new heights. It works especially well cherries and orange zest. The pudding has a rich and silky texture, which is balanced out by tart cherries and zingy orange zest… hold on a moment, my mom wants me to bring her a pudding… Sorry about that, so as I was saying this is such silky pudding with the tangy flavour of cherries and zingy oranges. The recipe is free of refined sugar; I used raw honey as a substitute. This does not mean that it is sugar free, it simply means that it is free for refined sugar that you would normally find in other sugars like castor sugar or dark brown sugar. Raw honey is a great source of antioxidants, which protects the body from cell damage. So you can make your pudding and eat it and not worry about harmful refined sugars. Now when it comes to the actual making of it, you have two options. Either you could make individual puddings or you could make one large pudding and then people can just help themselves. I tried both ways out during my recipe testing exercises and they both were great, I guess it just depends on the kind of person you are and how much you love your guests. I must warn you this isn’t a very firm pudding; it sets very loosely giving it a light and silky texture.

Cherry, Orange Pudding (refined sugar free)

Serves 6

Ingredients:

  • 300ml full fat milk
  • 100ml raw honey
  • 180g cherries
  • zest of 1 orange
  • 2 leaves gelatine
  • 250ml full fat cream

Method:

Place your milk and honey into a heavy based saucepan pan over a medium heat. Bring to a light simmer.

During this time you can prepare your gelatin sheets and fruit. Place the gelatin sheets into a shallow plate filled with cold water. It must be cold so that the gelatin does not dissolve. Leave to hydrate for 2-3 minutes. Slice your cherries in half and remove the pips. Leave to one side.

AA1A3979

Once the gelatin is soft, squeeze the sheets to rid the water. Place into a bowl. Pour your milk and cream mixture into the bowl and mix well. Add your cream to the bowl and continue mixing until all is well combined.

Place a mixture of the orange zest and cherries into 6 serving vessels or 1 serving bowl. Then pour equal amounts into the serving vessels or bowl.

AA1A4001

Place into the refrigerator and leave to set overnight.

AA1A4057

Serve with a little orange zest and for a purely decorative finish, squeeze the juice of a cherry over the top of the pudding.

Happy pudding making!

How To Master The Scandinavian Minimalist Style

Pernille Teisbaek, Columbine Smille, Caroline Blomst, Elin Kling, Sofi Fahrman, Carolina Engman….

Outfit14sep…these babes know exactly how to work that effortless Scandinavian minimalist style. Here is how they do it:

DETAILS & CREATIVE STYLING

The main secret to looking effortlessly interesting is to have an eye for details. If you see Columbine wearing a navy sweater, note that it’s always a bit more than that.

As in this outfit: the fact that it is ribbed (very on trend) and that it’s got extra long sleeves sure makes it unique. Besides, adding a belt on a sweater like that is for sure a creative way of styling your wardrobe essentials.

4 more creative styling ideas for your wardrobe essentials:

– Leather jacket underneath a furry vest.

– Layering (e.g. a tight turtleneck sweater under a sleeveless dress & a crisp shirt underneath a sweater).

– Any outerwear over your shoulders will instantly give off an effortless vibe to your look, preferably a leather jacket over your favourite striped shirt.

– Leather skirt + grey cashmere sweater will instantly be a party outfit á la Scandinavian fashionista if you add a pair of statement earrings!

MATERIALS / QUALITY

These women care a lot about high quality materials. Less is more. Cashmere, wool, silk blends, leather, suede… anything that can breathe and lasts long (and preferably gains character with time) is very important. Denim should also be added to this list.

THE BEAUTY

One other thing these girls have in common is the very simple hair and make up but often with an added twist. Finding a hairdresser that gets it might be a challenge but once you find them it’s golden. Keeping it fresh is key. Usually either or mentality when it comes to make up. Red lipstick = rest of face natural. Fancy eyeshadow = rest of face natural. Etc.

WARDROBE ESSENTIALSLOUBOUTIN SANIA CLAUS DEMINA zanita

  1. THE WHITE SHIRT. Never goes out of style.
  2. JEANS. Not that easy to find, but once its done, they might be the best thing that ever happened to you. Skinny? Flared? Loose? All of the above please!
  3. BLACK PUMPS. The hight doesn’t matter, as long as they look fabulous.
  4. PLAIN T-SHIRT. Grey, white or black. It’s all gonna look perfect. With anything you wear.
  5. A BLACK TROUSER. Because they are so very easy to style.
  6. FLAT SANDALS. Comfy and chic. Yes please!
  7. THE LITTLE BLACK DRESS. Every girl needs a LBD in their closet. We don’t really need to explain this one, right?
  8. LEATHER JACKET. The easiest and quickest way to look badass!
  9. AN EVERYDAY TOTE BAG. Preferably a black leather or suede one.

Need shopping tips? Head over HERE.

THE ACCESSORIES

It is,  as already stated, all in the details. Accessories are very essential and it can’t be just anything. Make sure you’ve got a collection of outstanding yet simple pieces of shoes, bags and jewellery. Here are a few suggestions on accessories I imagine a Scandinavian it-girl would be wearing:

COLOUR COMBOS

These are the most common color combinations that the Scandinavian minimalist style experts seem to like the most:

  • Navy + Black + Golden details
  • Tan + White + Golden details
  • All black (playing with different materials here is important though, gotta keep the dynamics somehow).
  • Cream + Denim Blue
  • All grey with a splash of colour

Well, I guess that pretty much sums the essential parts of how to master the Scandinavian minimalist style up! Do you have any other thoughts on this? Please share your thoughts, so much fun to connect with you guys!! Xo

Dream Destinations: London City Guide

Some of the absolute things we love most about traveling are the inspiration and adventure it brings. There’s nothing better than indulging in palatable options foreign to the tongue, perusing a fresh cityscape in real life, and venturing off into the endless hot spots we don’t often have access to in the motherland. That being said, it can also be overwhelming meandering through unfamiliar territory so we’ve done the deep dive to help navigate you through your next dream destination, starting with London.

Oh dear London, home to some of the world’s most influential tastemakers – Hello Tom Ford, Victoria Beckham, Nicholas Kirkwood, Kate Moss, and Alexa Chung to name a few – and it’s easy to see why the city charms. From the streetstyle to its unparalleled arts culture, diverse cuisine, and the native red telephone boxes, there’s much to see and do, but here’s a start…

London City Guide - Zanita Studio

Gordon’s Wine Bar

Wonderful atmosphere and perfect for groups because you can get whole wine bottles at reasonable prices and they have a HUGE selection. Extra bonus points – the charcuterie and cheese plates are generous.

La Bodega Negra

This place is perfect to go to before or after a broadway show – the food is amazing and it’s got an LA vibe. The tacos are not to be missed and you must try the tres leches for dessert.

Yauatcha

Fun Fact – London happens to host one of the world’s largest Chinese New Years outside of Asia. That means you must experience gourmet dim sum at Yauatcha.

Somerset Ice Skating

The perfect place for a memorable winter experience – skate in style at one of the most beautiful rinks you’ll ever see.

Shop at Harrod’s

For a first-class shopping experience, check out the luxurious Harrod’s (especially our fellow fashionistas) even for the sake of window shopping. And if you find everything to be a tad too expensive, delight in the delicacies at its exquisite in-house bakery.

Notting Hill

An obvious must-see if this is your first trip to London. The never-ending rows of pastel-colored buildings will easily have you in awe.

Victoria & Albert Museum

An architectural dream itself, this is the place to visit if you’re in the need of a creative revival. The high ceilings, regal arches and interior decor won’t disappoint.

You might just want to book a ticket and see the beauty for yourself – more flights to London HERE.

Any Brits out there that can dish out extra amazing recommendations? We’re always down to try new things to eat and places to hang out.

London City Guide - Zanita Studio

London travel supported by Cathay Pacific Airlines.

Cathay Pacific has five daily flights from Hong Kong to London Heathrow Airport. Beginning September 2016, it will add four more weekly flights to Gatwick Airport, which becomes a total of 39 flights per week from Hong Kong to London.

It will take just over 26 hours to get you from Sydney to London with Cathay Pacific, including layover times in Hong Kong. The return flight can get you back to Sydney in 22 hours.

There’s something special about Sydney – the city full of colour, the food is amazing and the beaches are absolutely gorgeous. My second favourite beach here is Clovelly (the first one is a secret!) because of it’s unique concrete surrounds – it actually reminds me a little of the coastline in Southern Italy. It’s probably the singularly most photographed location by fashion photographers based here, I even shot my very first campaign featuring Bambi at this spot around 5 years ago. It certainly wasn’t summer then!

I hope you like these snaps and lookbook video – all pieces available in store at Topshop Australia. The perfect go-to spot for a chic and fun summer wardrobe. All the love!

Building a Business with Avenue 32

Roberta Benteler Interview - Zanita Studio

It’s not every day that you get to sit down and chat with just any fashionable pioneer on the ins and outs of building a business from scratch.

Luckily, we were able to meet up with the admirable Roberta Benteler, founder of upscale e-tailer, Avenue 32. What diverges Benteler from her contemporaries is that she was once like many of us – working uninspiring jobs whilst chasing something satiating in the ever-creative and dynamic world of fashion even encountering her own share of rejection. But by doing something we’ve encouraged all along (never giving up) she embarked on her own and made waves in the luxury e-commerce landscape with her brainchild. Hear what she has to say on what that journey was like and what’s in store for the future of Avenue 32.

1. What were you doing before Avenue 32?

Before starting Avenue 32 I was working in Private Equity, but being a creative person, I felt the finance industry wasn’t stimulating enough for me. After helping out a friend of mine who is a fashion designer, I eventually had the idea for Avenue 32.

2. How did it come to exist?

It was born out of the desire to create an online shopping destination that brought back the element of discovery – by scouting new and interesting designers and to create a brand mix that inspired a sense of treasure hunting in the customer, as opposed to shopping for basics or widely available pieces.

3. What was the most challenging part of starting up?

Definitely getting the designers on board as, even five years ago, there were still a lot of skeptics in regards to selling luxury fashion online.

4. Looking back, is there anything you would have done differently?

Oh many things, but the important thing is that Avenue 32 as a company, and me personally, have learned a lot throughout it all, which will help us reach our goals for the future.

5. What do you love most about fashion?

There are many things I love about fashion. Being a very visual person, I love beautiful craftsmanship and fabrics for instance, but most of all I love how fashion reinvents itself every six months – that element of surprise, as you never know where it is going next. Fashion can also inspire confidence and emotion; it is an expression of ourselves, if we want it to be.

6. What is your most and least favorite aspect of owning your own business?

The best aspect of owning my own business is that I get to do my dream job and work with such an amazing and strong team, who are like a family to me. My least favourite aspect is probably being able to spend less time at home in London than I would like to.

7. Are there any particular things that influence your buying decisions when scouting new/emerging designers?

A lot of it is instinct to be honest, but good quality cannot be compromised.

8. Must have pieces to get through winter.

Definitely a THP Shop faux fur coat to brave the cold, Ikkii boots to stay warm and dry, plus anything by Perfect Moment, if you are going to face snow. Oh and a good party outfit of course! My favourite is the velvet Tuva jumpsuit by Temperley London.

9. Any advice for those interested in pursuing a fashion career that lack the educational background and network?

My advice would be to be persistent and don’t shy away from internships. They are often the best way into a business and then you have the chance to prove yourself. Also, apply to smaller firms and designers as the big ones will usually be inundated with applicants.

10. What’s next for Avenue 32?

2016 marks our fifth anniversary and will be a big year for us – we are not only launching 25 amazing new brands for SS16, but will also reveal our brand new website.
