“You live like this, sheltered, in a delicate world, and you believe you are living. Then you read a book… or you take a trip… and you discover that you are not living, that you are hibernating. The symptoms of hibernating are easily detectable: first, restlessness. The second symptom (when hibernating becomes dangerous and might degenerate into death): absence of pleasure. That is all. It appears like an innocuous illness. Monotony, boredom, death. Millions live like this (or die like this) without knowing it. They work in offices. They drive a car. They picnic with their families. They raise children. And then some shock treatment takes place, a person, a book, a song, and it awakens them and saves them from death. Some never awaken.

Carolina Herrera SS16

I can’t help but be inspired by the delicate beauty of Carolina Herrera SS16.

Carolina Herrera 5 Perhaps it’s that all those delicate pink tones really compliment my style of editing. By contrast, I would say that pink is perhaps my least favourite colour to wear mostly due to ‘Barbie fear’, looking like a parody of myself of some sort. Pink works though, and more and more I’m beginning to see the power in the hue.

So now I’m dreaming of a delicate pink and hazy editorial, perhaps in a romantic looking yellow cottage or an orchard. A couple in love, pastel tones on both of the pair. Smiles and flowers – along with some kind of love story! And I’d certainly love to cast red haired beauty Anastasia Ivanova… perhaps alongside someone with a contrasting look like Adonis Bosso. Romance!

The dreams.

The plans.

Thankyou to the team at Carolina Herrera for inviting me to experience this stunning runway collection in one of the best venues in NYC, The Frick Art Museum. I won’t forget it!

Things To Consider Before Quitting Your Job

Whenever one door closes, another one opens

– this is an inevitable cycle in life whether you’re about to leave your job for a better opportunity or out of misery. There are many factors to consider when doing so although you may not recognize them immediately (especially if this is your first time). Having left a handful of jobs now, I totally understand the guilt and grief that comes with quitting, but also the relief and revel associated with starting something fresh. Here are my top things to consider before quitting your job:

Time in job.

How long have you served in your job? Leaving a job when you’ve worked there in less than a year can actually look unfavorable on your resume since it really does take time to build the knowledge and skills to become proficient in a position. I’d recommend serving for a minimum of one year before jumping ships since it gives you time to prove yourself, your capability, and worth in a position and with a company.

Leave on good terms.

Never burn bridges.

Whenever possible, always quit on good terms, meaning make sure you’re in good standing with your current employer as far as year-end reviews, major projects, etc. Also, don’t piss people off or start slacking before you leave and always put in your two-weeks notice (or however long the standard time is depending on where you are). The benefit of leaving on good terms is that you’ll always be welcomed back. You’ll never know where life takes you and the grass may not be greener on the other side – better knowing you can return to something familiar than nothing at all.

Benefits.

So many things surrounding benefits:

– Vacation.

Do you have vacation time left and will your company reimburse you for unused vacation? If so, you can simply accept the lucre and work until the end of your time. However, if they don’t, you may want to maximize your paid time off and use your remaining vacation days prior to parting since these are days you’re entitled to.

– Health benefits

Will it take time for your new health benefits to kick in? In my experience, most places do require a certain time in job before you become eligible for benefits. I would advise protecting yourself by getting any outstanding annual doctor/dental visits in as soon as possible.

– Retirement accounts.

Assuming you have a retirement savings account of some sort with your current employer, you’ll need to find out if the employer will allow you to keep your funds in place or if you need to move them into another plan. If the latter is required, you’ll need to decide if you want those funds rolled into an IRA (individual retirement account) or into your new employer’s plan. Be sure to contact the financial institution housing your account to determine the succeeding steps.

Time off.

During the transitional period, will you want to take a break from working? Be sure to time your situation appropriately so you can get yourself settled and prepared for the new position, especially if there are moves involved or if you have kids. I always take a two-week break when making such transitions…it gives me time to tidy up any unsettled loose ends.

Another timing affair to think about is whether or not you’ll be receiving a bonus or payout of some sort. These things may not be worth missing out on. When I quit my first job, I realized a week later that my employer would have added a few thousands in my retirement account had I stayed an extra week – although it was money I never saw, the fact that I missed out a chunk of funds I didn’t really have to work for hurt. Never forget the small things.

The Formula For A Timeless Wardrobe

In case you’ve missed it, I’ve stolen a load of style knowledge from the Swedes.

Oroton 10
Stockholm…

It’s crazy how effortlessly cool these kids look when their just running errands at the grocery store! I’ve studied the formula at length and I can say a good part of it comes down to the Swedes being obsessed with the quality of things. Even Gustav, who isn’t super interested in fashion trends  is a total afficiado when it comes to tailoring and leather quality. The answer is investment pieces.

Enter Oroton, an Iconic Aussie luxury fashion accessories brand who always debuted a ready-to-wear collection in 2012. I was approached to create an editorial for Zanita Studio,  a partnership that I felt was a perfect match on account of my new style  influence from my Scandinavian friends.

Oroton 2

Here’s my top style tips to take from the Swedes….

  • Invest in quality – like an incredible leather shirt or skirt, they only work with your body and get better with time. Best of all you can throw on this seasons t-shirt or denim and you’re looking a million dollars.
  • Find the trend piece that comes around. The past season we’ve seen so much of the bucket bag – but it’s not a new trend by any stretch and you can guarantee it’s going to hold onto it’s relevance due to that ‘revitalised classic’ element. That’s a win.
  • Find your tote. This is the bag that will always serve you well – a good shopper style tote will never go astray when running errands – but when you’ve got one with style, suddenly you’re not looking like the ‘bag lady’ always heaving junk around town.
  • Learn to love neutral. If you’re purchasing an investment pieces, it’s always a safe bet to go with beige, tan, brown, cream – the Swedes know it well – because these hues compliment seasonal colours and slide effortlessly into your wardrobe.  If you’re like me and aren’t crazy about wearing black – then anything neutral toned should be your go-to classic choice.
  • Add a scarf. Wearing a scarf is a classy move – and each season there’s a new trend way to style it. I love wrapping a little one around my neck, super cute with a tee or shirt. Turns a classic look into more of a statement.
  • Navy is forever. Never goes out of style. Always works. #navyforever

Oroton 8

I’m taking over the Oroton instagram this weekend, don’t forget to follow them and get acquainted with this stylish Aussie label. So grateful to the team for inviting me to create this editorial.

Checking In and Checking Out: New York

new york sixty

Hi, Bye. Another flying visit to NYC.

IMG_0016This time it’s feeling a little different because Gustav and I assumed we’d be back for GOOD in three weeks. Turns out that’s not the case. We’re applying for a particular kind of VISA related to our Swedish company and in order to apply, we need to have been running it for a year. Wasn’t going to be a problem, because we’re clocking up a year in December – but as it happens – every day that we spend here in the States counts against our go date. So now it’s late January.

Meanwhile, we’ve already rented out our apartment, so we’ve no place to live. Intially I felt a bit flooded with doubts about what we should be doing next, where should we go? The miracle with our work is that it really happens wherever we are… so the question is – where do we dream to go??? We’ve got some friends in Bali and I’ve actually never been (surprising, given I’m an Aussie) so that’s on the list. Next up I’d LOVE to go back to Japan, such an exciting place to visit, the most gracious people and the best food and wonderful to photograph! I’d also love to visit Seoul – it’s such a hotspot for style and new ideas.

Gustav and I are thinking of purchasing a round the world ticket! How fun huh?

I shouldn’t jump the gun, because best laid plans tend to astray and this lifestyle doesn’t come cheap. I still need to flex my index finger and get snapping so we can keep our heads above water and the jobs can pull me all around the place. I figured I’d just share my thoughts, would love to hear of any suggestions of wonderful places to visit particularly throughout Asia.

So we’re onto Australia for three weeks! Melbourne and Sydney. I have a series of projects and some exciting partnerships – plus it’s a chance to catch up with friends.

Really really looking forward to a proper holiday soon. Thanks so much to all of you for all your support as always. LOVE YOU GUYS!!!

Special thanks to Sixty LES for supporting us while in NYC, was such a delight to have a sunfilled haven to return to after crazy days of traffic and meetings. You can check out our room tour on Facebook HERE. These pics were snapped in the Lobby and on our room balcony!

Canadian Supermodel Coco Rocha arrived in Australia last month for the Mercedes Benz Fashion Festival Sydney 2015.

I had the chance to chat with Coco about all things beauty, travel and all the favourite details of her crazy lifestyle and you can check out that post HERE. The next on my list of Fashion Festival priorities was getting the 411 on how to achieve her beauty and hair style from the team’s backstage… she was truly owning this bad ass look and I’m dying over her cheekbones. It’s impossible to ignore her striking features and her gamine appeal. Coco glows!

  2. Once skin is plumped and highlighted you will be surprised by how little foundation and coverage you actually need!
  3.  Use a small amount of Face and Body Foundation over your face and décolletage, and conceal where needed with Studio Finish Concealer and a small fluffy brush for an airbrushed finish.
  4. Eye Brows, Brush them up and into place with Clear Brow set, then use Charcoal Brown Shadow, wet and dry with a #266 Angle brush to feather in hair like texture to create fullness and definition.
  5. Eyes – Start by lining the eyes heavily with Feline eye kohl pencil and smudged the colour all the way around the eyes making sure the edges were blended and smooth. This creates the perfect base for eyeshadow to stick to and to amp up the intensity of colour!
  6.  Use Blue brown Pigment from MAC PRO, the intimate shiny multidimensional petrol colour, and deepen the crease with Carbon Eyeshadow to add drama.
  7. Apply Hush Cream Colour base mixed with some Strobe Cream patted onto the cheeks for a healthy glow, and then finish off the look by pressing Pure Zen Lipstick over your lips to soften and neutralise the natural pink and remain creamy!

Crafting The Perfect Cover Letter

$

So we’ve talked about resume writing and interview preparation, but there’s one thing we haven’t covered: Cover letters. For most employers, a cover letter is optional but I always advocate writing one especially for a job you’re really excited about; after all, it’s the one thing that can really set you apart from the competition. If you’re wondering how you go about crafting the perfect cover letter in a way that highlights your most desirable skills and witty personality, take notes below.

white-tee-distressed-jeans-camel-coat-happily-grey

Transpose Where Needed.

Too often do I see people placing important information in a cover letter that would be more impactful on a resume. Your resume is your passport to a job and the letter is simply extra information. If you feel you’ve written really strong statements in your cover letter, now’s the time to rethink about whether it actually belongs on your resume since that’s the first thing someone will always read.

Don’t Summarize Your Resume.

When a recruiter decides to read your cover letter, they’re obviously looking for supplemental information. One of the biggest mistakes I’ve seen over and over is restating the resume in paragraph form. Instead, you should be using your cover letter to highlight your knowledge – the most important skills you have that can benefit the organization based on the job description and then provide evidence to back that up (anything that shows how you’ve added value before). You should also express your curiosity, interest, and passion in the industry/employer and then explain why/how you’re a perfect match.

Manifest Confidence.

An employer needs to know that you can step right in and get the job done, which is utmost importance if you’re looking to move into a new career.

You do this by showing (not telling) how you’ve made such transitions before and how you’ve overcome adversities. Also, use positive language, obviously a no-brainer but necessary – this means avoid words that provide any sort of uncertainty such as if, don’t, but, etc. And of course, always say “Thank you”.

Concise Concise.

Keep it short and keep it relevant. Break it up into 3-4 strong parts, each one focusing on very specific topics. That being said, you should have a small section of your cover letter dedicated to your goals – I’m talking no more than three sentences and it doesn’t necessarily need to be related to long-term goals, but something that shows that you are someone with direction. The great thing about writing these letters is that it really tests your creativity – how do you sell yourself in 3-4 short paragraphs? Pick your words wisely.

Never One Size Fits All.

It’s a pain in the ass, but you must tailor every single cover letter to every single job you’re applying to – that’s just the best way to truly write an effective cover letter. You might be thinking, “Customize how?” Again, the customization is really dependent on the job description (the key skills are they looking for) and the employer (What’s the culture at the company and then decide if you need to sound traditional, fun, youthful?).

At the core, you should always focus on the employer’s needs.

– Susan

Oh Milan!

The city has some sort of bad rap – which I can relate to. It’s easy to get lost in the tourist traps and find yourself losing the romance. I always get that with Paris because I don’t have a load of French friends… come to think of it, I don’t have a huge posse of Italian friends either! It’s just easy to get good advice from locals in Milan if you just pluck up and ask. There’s so many hidden spaces and incredible restaurants to visit. I could never move to Milan because I’d gain so much weight.

ermano-scervino-blazer-wool-jeans So Italian style? Frankly I’d like to sing about it till the cows come home – and in my mind – some of the MOST stylish beauties reside in Italy. I was so impressed by the fearless dress sense of the girls I saw at the shows in Milan that I’m actually going to write another post shortly about that. Seriously those girls rock so hard – and it’s not hard to see why, viewing the collections of MFW.  This was a look I wore to the Ermanno Scervino show, which was an exercise in elegance and something I’m keen to take lessons in. Look at me all tressed up in a blazer and lace! Who is this elegant lass?!

I guess it’s just progress, the harder and further I get into my business, as I take myself and what I do with greater seriousness, it’s only natural to err towards dressing like a LADY BOSS. They say you should dress for the role you’d like to have…. Give me another year or two – these posts will be an exercise in power dressing!!

I joke.

But still, a change is as good as a holiday and it does feel pretty good to dress like a elegant lady – or like an Italian. I definitely don’t want to be missing Milan Fashion Week next season – and I’d got as far to say I’d take it over Paris any day of the week. Fashion and delicious Italian food?! What more could you want?

Stay tuned for my imagery of the gorgeous Ermano Scervino show!

The very final show I attended for Fashion Month this past season was Paul and Joe – which is coincidentally one of the first runway shows I’ve ever blogged about way back in 2008.

What I love about the brand is how easy it is to wear – but there’s still loads of spirit and personality. This SS16 collection had me dreaming of the setting of one of my favourite movies, Blow – though I believe the designer Sophie Mechaly was referencing Scarface and Magnum, P.I. Either way I couldn’t get enough of it, a firm favourite.

So tired and jet-lagged right now so I won’t blather further! Hope you guys like my edit xx

How To Make Vegan Panna Cotta Puddings

IMG_2101

Lately I’ve been struggling to keep up with my blogger life. It’s quite sad cause it’s my favourite life. I’ve had very little time at all to make anything and that sucks! This past week was the first week of the fourth term of school, meaning the last term of grade 11 (I’m nearly there!). I’ve already been loaded with projects and test dates. It’s extremely overwhelming especially because I have to start worrying about where I’m going to study after school and if I can even get in. It’s a good thing to have a day off to do what I love, to relax and slow down for a few hours.

Also in other amazing news, I have been placed on a list of South Africa’s rising stars by one of South Africa’s top home and decor magazines! I am so unbelievably proud to be together on a list with so many other talented South Africans! Please vote for your favourite nominee (hopefully it’s me ;)) here!

IMG_2021

This recipe is based on a recipe I made a few weeks back. It was this amazingly delicious and creamy Almond Pudding made using milk, rice, almonds, cornstarch and a few other ingredients. When I posted the recipe one of my followers asked if they could replace the milk for almond milk, as they were vegan. I was so disappointed with myself for not coming up with that idea myself, but then I was thankful to her. I’ve been meaning to make this recipe for a while now and am so happy I did! So here are my Vegan Panna Cotta puddings.

These little individual pudds are made using rice milk which means that they making are completely vegan. Just because they are vegan doesn’t mean that they aren’t good. I think that people seem to think that vegan food lacks flavour and substance, but that really is not the case, especially with these little pudds. Rice flour is made with actual rice grains which are soaked in water. The liquid that is squeezed out of the grain is the milk. The milk is very high in Vitamin B, which is essential to your metabolism circulation and nerve functions. Drinking it can also give your immune system a great boost! It has a wonderful nutty flavour and velvety texture. I’ve used cornstarch as the setting agent in this recipe. The cornstarch makes them set so quickly, unlike normal Panna Cotta which can take up to 6 hours to set. This one is ready within two hours of it sitting in the refrigerator. Also like my last recipe with the apple crumble, this recipe is free from processed sugar. I don’t think its necessary for me to tell you again about agave syrup so take a look at this recipe to find out more. These are the creamiest little vegan puddings perfect served with honey, cinnamon and flaked almonds.

IMG_2093

Vegan Panna Cotta Puddings

Makes 6 small individual puddingsIMG_2031

Ingredients:

  • 4 tbs corn flour
  • 750ml rice milk
  • 100ml agave syrup
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

Method:

Place your cornstarch in a bowl and pour about 100ml of your rice milk over it. Mix into a thick paste. Add the remainder of your rice milk and agave syrup to the bowl and mix until all ingredients are completely incorporated together.

Transfer the mixture into a heavy based saucepan and over a medium heat. Mix constantly until the mixture comes to a light boil. Turn down the temperature slightly and continue mixing until it has thickened. It should resemble a pudding like consistency.

Remove from the heat. Add your vanilla extract into the mixture and mix. Pour into a jug to make the next step easier.

IMG_2027

Prepare six small moulds (I used glasses and espresso cups). Pour equal amounts of the pudding into each mould. Place into the fridge and leave to set for 2 hours.

Remove from moulds and serve with honey, almond flakes and cinnamon.

On Standing Up For Yourself

Something I picked up around my mid twenties, don’t waste your time taking anybody’s shit.

It’s really a lesson in being blunt and speaking your mind – and for me it stemmed from being ripped off in taxi’s and dealing with inappropriate comments men. I won’t accept that.

When I was younger I did – because frankly stepping in and standing up from yourself  can be pretty terrifying. It’s been a really important part of my own personal growth. I’m not talking about abusing someone for cutting in line (though a firm comment doesn’t go astray there) but a ‘no-doormat’ policy is an incredible valuable philosophy.

missoni-top-and-other-stories-glitter-skirt-furla-bag-milan-duomo

Take for example this photograph. It was incredibly challenging to get a good shot here because in most of the images I’ve got a pretty stern expression. Basically – if you stop moving forward with pace at any point in the Duomo, someone is going to approach you and get up in your personal space and try and sell you some useless shit. It’s generally annoying, but pretty easily handled with a wave and a ‘no thanks’. Anyway – this one dude comes up to me while we were shooting, trying to sell me some dried corn to feed the pigeons. I give the obligatory gesture and “no thanks” and he gets right up, way too close – and throws the corn all around our feet so we’re swarmed with pigeons (not my favourite animal) and I’m getting pretty disturbed.

“Please go away.”

I’m terse. So the next thing that happens is, he throws the corn full pelt at me, and it stings. ‘Bitch!’ he yells at me. Rising fury.  My first instinct was to call him a list of expletives I won’t be posting on this site. I almost yell, “You really need to respect people and grow some manners!”.

missoni-top-and-other-stories-glitter-skirtIt was enough for me, even if it’s not something that’s not going to get through to him. By the way he felt he could get so close with me (cue creepy smile) I could tell he wasn’t expecting me to be someone who would stand up for themselves, thus the aggressive reaction from him. Maybe I could have handled it better (any advice?) – but standing your ground is always more satisfying than being harassed (and maybe taking a bit of dried corn to the thigh).  I feel like once you practise it a few times, you’re never going to get ripped off knowingly and it feels great to have a new kind of power in that self confidence.

Being taken advantage of stems from our fear of being rejected, making us feel vulnerable and clouding our judgement. Sometimes it’s over something that’s more important than corn and pigeons, like bullying in school or the workplace. What it comes down to –

Teach people how you want to be treated.

It’s essential to find a good attitude, so you can then find the strength in a positive way to respond in a way that’s most helpful for your situation. You don’t want to view yourself as a victim, rather own and take command of the situation #ladyboss. Being rejected, laughed at, harassed or taken advantage of is always going to be so more more painful than finding the strength to take steps against it.

Anyway, when I figured this out, I was able to confidently handle some pretty complicated situations much better and it’s been great for my conscience. Hope this helps some of you consider how you approach these kinds of situations… even if it’s just about finding the gumption to tell your neighbour to please turn down his music!

There’s fewer events on the Australian fashion scene larger than the Spring Racing Carnival.

For those of you who don’t know, the carnival is a series of Horse Racing events and the absolute best opportunity all year to dress up fancy like. Your typical race attire would be something along the lines of a body-con dress and scary  ‘fascinator’. The most interesting styles those who take risks and bend the rules. I really try to beat to my own drum during race season, preferring to go with more unexpected outfit choices – like the two piece suit or a straw hat.

So without further ado, here’s an editorial I created in collaboration with Topshop Australia, featuring some of my selects for looks to wear on Raceday.

Ready – set – GO!

Topshop Racing 2 Floral
Topshop Racing 4 midi dress

Topshop Racing 1 two piece

Topshop Racing 3 suit

To get the most essential race wear looks, head into a Topshop store in Australia. All clothing and accessories in this editorial are from Topshop. Really looking forward to sharing more from this collaboration in the very near future!!

How To Overcome the Biggest Hurdle In Corporate: Office Politics

$
0
0

Consider yourself lucky if you haven’t had to deal with office politics.

For the rest of us who have seen mediocrity rise to the top, we know how frustrating it can be when opportunities don’t always come with outstanding merits. Who you know and your relationships often prevail and therefore, have a huge effect on your career success especially once you move up higher in the ranks at large corporations. So essentially, you have to become involved…I know, it’s unfortunate, but true. No need to fret, here’s how you can overcome the biggest hurdle in corporate – office politics:

– Build strong relationships.

offpol
The purpose in building strong relationships is to gain respect from those that matter and to be visible to management. Look into participating in side projects, helping your colleagues out, and making yourself available. You need to show you’re genuinely interested in people and their projects by asking questions, listening, acknowledging, and offering suggestions. Being known as a go-to person will make a big impression on those above you because if you have that kind of an influence, you start to appear indispensable to the organization.

– Stay true to yourself.

Focus on being true to yourself. If certain actions or people put you in situations where you start to question your own character and values, it’s time to walk the other way. You’ll see that some people willingly put up a face, an act, and will say or do anything to get ahead, but these things eventually surface. You do not need to compete on this level.

– Don’t be afraid to boast.

If you’re looking to play the game, you should already be taking on tasks above and beyond your job description. And if that’s the case, don’t be afraid to talk about it. The thing about working in such a competitive environment is that people need to know of your accomplishments. You cannot assume that they recognize it just because you’ve done something big – you need to highlight it. (Caveat: This is not to be confused with over-embellishing your work, being over-confident, or bragging all the time.)

– But watch what you say.

This might sound obvious, but don’t spread rumors or start gossip and definitely don’t repeat what you don’t know to be true. Even if a co-worker comes venting about someone else, just listen but don’t say much. We all know how easy it can be to lose sight of the things you can say or take part in when you’re caught up in the situation. Avoiding it from the get-go will prevent that from happening. And remember, what people say to you can also be said about you. So yes, be aware, but take gossip lightly.

– Eyes & ears opened at all times.

I’ve said this before, but you really do learn more by listening and observing so pay attention to what the topside gang is doing. Who are they promoting, what kind of actions do they praise, what are they constantly stressing? Take mental notes and proactively hound activities to get you there. You should also think about the influential people within your organization – how do they communicate with others? What are their priorities and What makes them so enticing? As a spectator, you’re seeking out the actions, reactions, and body language of both the speaker(s) and the audience. Then, use this information to align your style with the culture of management – think about how you can communicate more compellingly and effectively. How do you alter your message to various people?

This is the kind of insight that allows you to anticipate problems before they arise, recognize and jump on opportunities before the rest, and most importantly, overcome the difficulties that coexist with office politics.

Travelling Long Haul – The Vlog

Hey friends!! I can’t remember if I put any of this on snapchat (I’m zanitazanita) but I certainly vlogged the bejesus out of my recent trip from NYC to Sydney.

I’m got a new camera for video (A Canon G7x) and I’m still figuring it out, it’s such high resolution that the damn thing is pretty unforgiving. I almost wish I wore some make-up for this flight – but then again – it’s so awful to wear anything but loads of moisturiser on a long haul. Apologies for the lack of focus and erratic framing, I promise I’m going to get better at this.

I could definitely get used to flying Business class! I hope you all get the chance once in your lives because it’s very fun way to travel. The attendants on Cathay Pacific really make you feel like a million dollars and it makes what would normally be quite a harrowing journey a total breeze. Gustav even got to order a fresh cheeseburger! Can you imagine? I had a seared tuna salad.

I got off the plane feeling pretty awesome considering the hours we spent in the air (about 29 hours) and it was a boon considering we were due to fly to Melbourne for work the following day. Kicked that jetlag in the butt!

Now I know what it feels like to be Beyonce.

zanita khaki4Thankyou so much to Cathay Pacific for supporting us on this journey – #lifewelltravelled indeed!

Nicole-Hugo-2Nicole and I have been friends for a really long time now.

The first time we met properly, I had reached out to see if I could do a feature on my site about her Australia Fashion Week style. I imagine it was probably the first time bloggers started getting invites to MBFWA and all of us were so thrilled.  It’s crazy how far she’s come since that time, her tenacity and dedication has been such an inspiration.

Since that day we’ve worked on a whole load of different shoots together – greatest hits include our shoot for Ralph Lauren, for Toni Maticevski, for Louis Vuitton… and of course this Eiffel Tower/Roses/Red dress number. Content I put on my blog with Nicole is always some of the most well received…

There’s truly something about the Gary Pepper Girl!

So here we have another something special we’ve worked on together, again in New York – and for Hugo Boss.

You can see the rest on GaryPepperGirl.com

Thanks so much Nicole for inviting me to be part of this shoot. It’s always the most fun!

Beauty Must Haves For Dry Skin This Season

DSC_9165Everyone sings their praises as the air gets cooler – boots, scarves, chunky knits, and coats are all the rage, but let’s not forget the skin woes that come with fall/winter (especially for us dry skin gals). If you’re like me and suffer badly from dry skin during the cooler months, you might want to rotate in some new products. Here are my beauty must haves this season:

– Hydrating Cleanser

If you haven’t already, you might want to switch to a gentle, hydrating cleanser – it really makes a difference. While I’ve heard of the Lancome Creme Mousse Confort in the past, I never gave it a chance until I received a sample recently. It isn’t stripping nor irritating and most importantly, leaves the skin soft, supple, and clean (as it removes makeup). Consider this my new go-to.

– Spring Water Spray

It sounds extremely silly to pay $20 for water in a can, but it is so worth it. I’ve only ever tried La Roche Posay’s Thermal Spring Water, but it is absolutely glorious. After a spritz or two, your skin feels smooth, hydrated, and balanced. It is as perfect on a clean face as it is over makeup. I enjoy this product best in between cleansing and toning.

– Moisturizer

I’m all about a good mix of natural + chemical based skincare products and the natural Dr Hauschka Quince Day Cream is truly amazing (along with its citrusy, spicy scent). It feels super light weight on, but packs a ton a of moisture without leaving the skin greasy, sticky, or tacky. You’ll immediately notice a natural radiance upon application, which also makes it perfect underneath makeup. Another great option that can be used simultaneously day and night is Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream.

– Eye cream

The delicate skin underneath your eyes really warrant a cream separate from your standard moisturizer. I’ve found Lancome Progres Eye Cream to excel in the moisture department. The texture is thicker and denser than most eye creams, but for this particular reason, it’s also the most moisturizing one I’ve ever tried (even compared to the highly revered La Mer).

– Facial Mask

If you’re really in dire need of both moisture and hydration, the FAB Oatmeal Mask does wonders in under 15 minutes. Any dry patches essentially disappear and you’ll notice how much softer and nourished it looks.

DSC_9176

– Oil

I’ve been afraid of oil for years now until I came upon the Caudalie Divine Oil. It can be used for both your face and body and what I love most is that it’s non-greasy and absorbs quickly. With the supreme packaging, you can easily spray this where needed and rub it in. Good bye to reptile-esque knees and elbows.

– Exfoliator

Although your skin may be dry, exfoliating is still a necessity to slough away your dead skin. And this simply leaves your skin youthful and healthy. The FAB Facial Radiance Polish is super gentle yet still effective at doing so – an easy no brainer.

– Beauty Blender

If you only ever use one thing to apply your base, let it be the BeautyBlender Sponge. The sponge leaves no streaks or traces of make up and using it damp with the dabbing motion really allows the product to sit seamlessly on the skin without highlighting any dryness. Consider this your best friend when it comes to winter time makeup. If you’re on a budget, I’ve found the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge to be the best alternative.

– Liquid Highlighter

And if your skin still appears lackluster even after excessive moisturizing and hydrating, fake it with a highlighter that results in a faint and natural glow. A liquid option is preferable to powder and the one I’ve stuck with for years is the ultimate Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector – an internet favorite that surely lives up to its accolades.

How To Make The Perfect Gluten Free Halloween Pumpkin Pie

Halloween has never really been a big holiday that people celebrate in South Africa. Looking back on my Halloween childhood, I remember my sister and I walking around the neighbourhood, us being the only children in the area, and knocking on people’s doors for shouting “Trick or treat” with excitement. If we were lucky enough for people to even respond to our chants, we would get the worst replies a child who is deprived of sweets at home to hear: “Sorry, I’m just in the shower at the moment, could you come back later”, or “Go away, we don’t have anything for you” or my personal favourite “Wow, I can’t believe it’s already October. Had I of known, I would have bought sweets. Come back next year”. We were way too nice to even think of the trick part of the “trick or treat”. Maybe we weren’t, I think my father would just tell us that we weren’t allowed to trick anyone. Then we would walk, empty-handed, back to our healthy sweet free home… but when we arrived the smell of pumpkin pie intoxicating, in my opinion it was way better than any sweets.

IMG_2192

You know a recipe is authentic when you find it handwritten in one of your mother’s old cookbooks.

IMG_2112

You could so easily get away without the pastry crust. In fact that’s the way my mom makes it. I just added it for an extra decorative touch and crunchy texture. This is a traditional pumpkin pie recipe. So traditional, it has been in my life for as long as I can remember. I have adjusted the recipe slightly to make it gluten free. Basically all I did was replace the flour with gluten free flour. You can buy it at any health food shop, and I’ve seen some grocery stores including it in their health/alternative ingredients section. This is the kind of dish that could be eaten as part of your main course or as a pudding. I only ever remember eating it as a main. It’s quite nice to have a balance of sweet and savoury on your plate. The sweetness of the natural sweetness of the pumpkin is enhanced with a little extra sugar. The filling is velvety and smooth, which is complemented by a surprisingly crisp and crunchy gluten free pastry crust. It can be a bit rich if you eat too much, so pace yourself!

Have a happy Halloween!

Gluten Free Pumpkin Pie

Serves 8-10 peopleIMG_2125

Ingredients:

Pastry crust:

  • ¾ cups, chilled, chopped butter
  • ¾ cups castor sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups gluten free flour

Filling:

  • 8 cups cooked, mashed pumpkin
  • 2 ½ cups gluten free flour
  • 3 eggs
  • 3 tsp baking powder
  • 2 cups castor sugar
  • ½ cream

Topping:

  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tbs butter
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp castor sugar

Method:

IMG_2139Pastry:

Place the pastry crust ingredients into a bowl. Mix together until dough forms. Wrap in plastic wrap and place to rest in the fridge for 30 minutes (during this time you can prepare your pumpkin).

Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius and grease a 30cm by 18cm rectangular baking dish.

Once the dough has rested, remove from the refrigerator and divide into two equal pieces.

Place one half onto a clean floured (gluten free flour) surface and the other half back into the refrigerator. Using a rolling pin, roll out the piece that is on the floured surface. Roll it out about the same size as your baking dish. Place into your baking dish and spread across the sides of the dish with your fingers. You want the pastry to be as thin as possible. Using a sharp knife, remove any pastry that hangs over the sides of the dish.

Poke the base with a fork a few times, this will help air bubbled to escape. Place a sheet of baking paper over the pastry and pour some baking beans or rice into it. Place into the oven and leave to bake for 10-15 minutes. This is called blind baking. It prepares the base for the filling so that it doesn’t go soggy once baked together with the filling. Remove from the oven and discard of the baking paper, save the beans for your next pastry bake.

IMG_2143

Filling:

Place all of your filling ingredients into a bowl and mix until combined together.

IMG_2151

Assembly:

IMG_2157Pour most of your filling into your pastry crust. You may find that you have a little extra. Don’t throw it away; simply bake it in a separate dish without the pastry crust.

Roll out your other half of pastry and slice long strips the same length and width size as your baking dish. Arrange them over the top of your filling in whichever way you like. You could make a criss cross, a lattice pattern or diagonal lines. Press the pastry to against edges of the baking dish.

Brush with your egg yolk and place into the oven to bake for 45 minutes to an hour. By that time it will have risen and turned a golden brown colour. Poke with a toothpick to check if it is cooked all the way through. If it comes out clean, you can remove it from the oven.

To serve, rub butter over the surface and sprinkle castor sugar and cinnamon whilst still warm.

The Right and Wrong Way – Cleavage!

Marques-almeida-emporio-armani-furlaFrankly I don’t think there’s many wrong ways to show cleavage…

It’s really just a question of confidence and timing. I guess it would be ill-advised to show too much if you’re extremely well endowed and touring conservative parts of the world, not because you don’t look fabulous (you probably do!) but because people can be mean and short sighted, judgemental – and nobody needs to be told they aren’t good enough or worse. Maybe a funeral isn’t the right place either, because it’s about mourning and not your fabulous fun bags. Don’t expose your chest too much at job interviews – because you don’t want the job in THAT way. Seems obvious.

As you can already tell – this is a very low cut dress… and perhaps the only the second time (the first would be this – and actually a favourite of mine!) I’ve worn something of the like on my blog. One of the reasons I don’t really like showing so much cleavage is that my skin is so white, my boobs become like beacons in the freakin’ night – and of course, I don’t like being stared at. Incidentally another post where I sort-of ‘brought the girls out’ to play.

So steeled up, walking out the door with this look. ‘They look great! It’s much – but not TOO much.” I told myself. Looking back at some of the streetstyle pics though, I did feel a bit self conscious about my choice. Not because my bewbs are really out there – but really because of that darn colour contrast. It’s like LOOK AT MY BOOOOOOBS!!!!

Anyway, it’s done now and Fashion week is the time to be flashy. When in Rome!

Well, actually it was Milan. I wore this look to the Giorgio Armani show. Viva Italia!

Fashion Month Outfit Recap

The Month that Was…

zimmerman-benah-karen-walker

Saving the best for last, perhaps the most fabulous piece I wore all month, the Zimmermann Rhythm Flute dress.

I had the esteemed pleasure of seeing it float down the runway last season and it’s been love ever since… you know a piece is well worth the love when you’re still a fan after 6 months time!  It was the most wonderful dress to wear and photograph, I’m really looking forward to snapping it again in some wonderful location when the weather gets warmer in the Northern Hemisphere… Probably on a model, it’s so much easier to realise a vision when I’m directing someone else.

So this is the last of my outfits from Fashion Month… means that I need to start dressing a little better and snapping my looks again! It’s been nice to have a break from it.

Happy Hump Day!!

A Lover’s Guide to Paris

MBH_9209hotel therese 2coffee paris style paris paris mbharper MBH_9237mbharper paris paris

It’s called the city of love for a reason. The energy of Paris is unlike any other city in the world. It’s full of beauty, mystery and elegance, It is literally the most loveable city I’ve ever been to.

Not doing Paris like a tourist is key to really getting into the heart of it. If you love galleries and museums then you couldn’t ask for anything better The Louvre, Galeries Nationales du Grand Palais and The Centre Pompidou but if that isn’t want gets you going (like moi) and what floats your boat is eating amazing food, drinking freakin mind-boggling wine and just living in the city, I have the places you need to go. For me, eating is something that I really, really love to do. Kind of to the point were I plan my day around my meals. It’s pretty much the highlight of my day… well to a degree. But when visiting a new place, trying new things is something high on my to do list. Walking around and just finding things as you wonder is also very romantic, it’s about not having a plan and being open to experiencing new things – just sort of going with the wind, ya know?

So here is where to stay, what to do and where to eat!

Stay

Hotel Therese – The hotel with the most perfect location. Located in the right bank on a quiet street in the 1st Arrondissement, Hotel Therese is a hidden designer gem. Only a ten minute walk to the Louve and Jardin des Tuileries as well as being situated heavenly close to awesome coffee shops for your daily caffeine hit (or sweet treat, that you may spend the next few months dreaming about). The Hotel is absolutely beautiful, filled with designer art and furniture, this chic hotel is a place for the stylish.

 5/7, rue Thérèse 75001 Paris

Where to Eat

HolyBelly – If you want a good coffee and some good breakfast then this is the place. Owners Nico Alary and Sarah Mouchot have set up a funky place that does not disappoint! Their café is something you would find in Melbourne – So visiting from Australia, this was a breath of familiar fresh vegemite smelling air! Pancakes, muesli and coffee was enjoyed after a morning run!

Kunitoraya – A Japanese restaurant that is truly tasty – I know what you are thinking: “Japanese in Paris?”, yes – that’s right. Guess what. We did it and it was really udon lickin’ good! Bowls of delicious noodle soup and tasty tempura.

Bistrot Blanc Bec – Super cute and stylish décor. The food is simple, fresh and beautiful! If want some French food and good wine then head there for a really nice night.

Pierre Sang –  Dinner with a twist – Asian-influenced  – This is a genius idea – We had so much fun here – Make sure you do the surprise tasting menu – Best idea EVER!

Coffee

Honor – Super Sleek outdoor coffee shop, which makes a pretty good brew .

Fondation Cafe – Owned by a fellow Aussie, Chris knows a thing or two about a good cup of coffee. Grab a table on the street, order your favourite coffee and get some lemon cake and just take it all in!

Télescope – Just around the corner from Hotel Therese, this coffee spot is super cute, makes a good coffee and tasty cooked goods (had to order more).

Ten Belles – This place was packed every time we visited, be sure to get there early if you want a table, or leave it to luck which is sort of romantic.

Steel Coffeeshop & Cyclewear – Make an awesome iced coffee for those summer days!

What to do

Arc de Triomphe – This is a must do. You will fall in love with Paris once climbing 284 steps, the view is to die for.  A 360 degree view of the most beautiful city. Do not miss this!

Jardin des Tuileries – Located next to the Louver is a stunning place to walk early in the morning. Grab a Coffee and Croissant and wonder through the park.

Jardin du Luxembourg – This garden is beautiful as you walk through, grab a banana and Nutella crepe and watch the little model boats in the pond. A really nice way to spend an afternoon with your lover or even with a book.

Marché Bastille – Farmers market held on Thursday and Sunday. Be sure to head there for some fresh flowers, a juice and to take in all that good old French produce.
