How to: Work Unusual Proportions

Guess this was to be expected - but I'm feeling a bit drained as I write this post. I've been working alot - and I'm not so much physically exhausted as... I think my brain is tired of thinking. My thoughts are mush. Think I need to watch some Modern Family and chill out!

At least I can rest easy knowing I've stuck to my schedule. I never knew I would be capable of posting ten times a week if I didn't see it all laid out before me. Nothing like the satisfaction of a job done right!

Anyway this outfit - quite a refined look opposed to my usual tastes - but the odd proportions make it feel my own. I like breaking up proportions in unusual ways, but it could be something easier for me to pull of because I'm so tall (181cm). I was always envious of the way tshirts sat on my shorter girlfriends, how they could bend over without fear of exposing their butt cracks. T-shirts are never long enough! Thank goodness I'm an adult and have the good sense to wear dresses as shirts now. You needn't fear my butt crack!

Ok, now I'm quite delirious.

Summer is happening down under and that means it’s the season of water and skin. In the past I’ve gotten a little grief about the colour of my skin - particularly when I was around 15. Growing up in a small coastal town, tanning was the thing - and I’m naturally very very fair. I’ve been guilty of capitulating to the trend of the tan in the past… and even shamefully… have used a tanning bed.

Then one day I realised I didn’t give two farts for what people thought about my very pale skin, I didn’t find it ugly or offensive so why should I bother tanning - which I also found to be a total bore and a pain in the butt.

One of the key reasons I decided tanning wasn’t for me was my vanity - ageing. When I was 18 I visited Canada to see family and was so amazed at how much younger Canadians look than Australians. I'm talking about ten years younger! Then of course, Canada is a place that really get’s just a fraction of the kind of sun exposure you’ll get from living Down Under.

The second reason is a little more grim, skin cancer. Australia has the highest rate of it in the world - so much so that I could bet every Aussie knows someone who has been through it. Personally - my Mum was diagnosed with melanoma (which was operated on) and my Dad has had radiation treatment on his face. So you can see why promoting sun safety and awareness is a cause that touches close to home for me.

Gratefully I’ve noticed a shift in attitudes about tanning since I was younger and more and more people are wising up to the benefits of being sun smart. It’s thanks to initiatives like Pretty Shady, forging a new trend in a generation who understand that having a tan isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

This being said, Pretty Shady isn’t about avoiding going out in the sun altogether - but knowing what you need to make the most of summer and not put your precious skin on the line - literally! It’s so important to protect your skin - and your eyes - from the harsh rays of the sun. Pretty Shady is here with all the tools you need to avoid the dreaded C in the summer.

I’m really proud to be working with the Pretty Shady initiative, to share with you the incredible importance of being smart in the sun. Hope you like my work!

More Music You Want To Hear

Another long day, it's 8pm and I've still got alot of work to do - thank goodness I have these songs to get me through. It never ceases to amaze how much easy it makes life when I've got lovely soothing sound to work with. I wish I could write music - especially electronic music. I've tried using Garage Band before and with perserverance I've managed to produce some pretty passable beats but conquering a whole track seems pretty impossible. It is a load of fun though!

Have any of you ever tried to create your own music? Or even better - loaded some onto youtube?? Send links!

Hope you like these tracks xx

The Swedes are hating me right now. Walking around beaming like moron, ranting about how we're having  'such a wonderful snowy day!' and living for the cosy vibes that come for the season. I'm an Australian! This is all very exotic for me! Perhaps by the next winter I'll start to whine and complain - but for now the locals ought to riding my waves of positivity... right?

It can be depressing just seeing the colours that everyone don's for this time for year - black, black, black. It's just not really my jam! So I have some sweet pastel pieces in my wardrobe to make me smile.

A fun trend I've adopted here - the sweater as a scarf - which I first spied on Pernille and Camille's blogs. Clever idea! I'm using an Equipment cashmere number and it's extremely warm - unlike my ankles. FASHUN.

I'm running off now to meet Andy and Carolina, so excited to see them! Hopefully I can convince both of them to get in front of my lens tomorrow. We'll see!

Have an awesome weekend peeps xx

How to Keep Good Habits

How to Keep Good Habits

"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act - but a habit" - Aristotle

I know as well as anyone, it's not easy to start a good habit - always going to the gym, finishing your projects on time, eating well, working hard to improve in your career everyday. There are factors in everyone's life that bring them down and make it challenging to further yourself. How can you combat this?

By sticking to good habits.

Have you ever heard of the 10,000 hours theory? It's by Malcolm Gladwell who wrote the book 'Outliers'. To summarise - it states that if you practise at something for 10,000 hours - you're going to become a master in your field. Where it be at Photography, Music, Design, Finance - even if you're completely crap to start out with - when you're in the habit of regular practise, you're going to improve. If you reach 10,000 hours of practise - you're one of the best in your field. Obviously there's a lot of exceptions to this rule, the point is - Make a habit of something - you're going to get continually good at it. The better you can stick to  it - the better you'll me. Case in point? Me. I was never great at photography... I just stuck to it and now I'm better. I guess it sounds really simple - but it's amazing how many people say "Oh but you're so talented at that so it's easy for you." When really it's not talent at all - it's the discipline of sticking to the same task and practising over and over.

It's vital that you start somewhere. In the word's of the famous Ice hockey player, Wayne Gretzky "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take".

So the next step is to find the key to your motivation, that thing that inspires you to keep it up long term - a reward for your hard work. This really comes down to a way of thinking. If you're wanting to keep fit, going out for a run is the hard work and the habit that you need to get into - then reward is the incredible feeling you get from being energized and healthy. If you're wanting to be more organised and keep a tidy home, then working little bit everyday is the habit and enjoying your clean home is the reward. If you want to make the people you care about happier, then going out of the way to help them without expecting something in return is the habit - and the reward is seeing their smiling faces and the difference you make in their lives.

In summary, it's important to define your habits - once you have that you put in the processes to fulfil them. Consistency and discipline are key.

So that's my thought's on the matter... start a new good habit today!

Get the Look: Cheeky Alexa Chung

Ok - so I know what you're thinking, that this illustration looks so much like Alexa Chung that you had to do a double take! Well - as talented as I am an illustrator, it's a cartoon people. I tried to do Alex proud. I was inspired by the fact she has a new collection out for AG. It's pretty cool! Very retro vibes.

Anyway, in all seriousness - this represents a new chapter in my crappy illustration escapades - I've decided to draw a celebrity every week! And then emulate her style... or dress her in pieces I think she ought to be wearing. Haha! Sooooooo who should I do next???

The Zanita Photoshop Basics Course

I've been pretty hesitant about this course... mostly because I don't want to give away my secrets! So many of you have asked me how I edit my images and I always avoid the questions... until now. My Photoshop Basics Course is due for launch in one week. It'll teach you in my own words, exactly how easy it can be to take your images to the next level. This before and after image is a sneak peek ;)

Of course - editing alone isn't going to give you a great image, unless you've handled your camera well to take the shot in the first place - you'll simply be working to try and fix a shot. The best place to start is with my Fashion and Blog Photography Basics Course.... then work on the editing.

Excited to share all with you very soon!

It's really really difficult to shoot on a snowy day - and to be fair I'm lucky to even have these three images to post. The snow flakes really affect your vision and the camera's ability to autofocus. Still - I love the effect of the snow falling - so dreamy! If I only I had the time to trek out to a beautiful forest park to get these images. Trouble is - even if I did put in the effect, chances are the light would be unsatisfactory. Snow really creates a challenge, it means the light is coming from all directions!

Anyway, this trench is a vintage number I purchased last year - It's a little bit oversized but I think my shoulders are broad enough to pull it off. A great piece to add to my winter artillery, you can't go wrong with vibrant red!

10 Great Habits to Stick To

10 Great Habits to Stick To

Outfit 9c
Outfit 9b

I read recently that if you're write an ambition down you're waaaaaay more likely to stick to it. So I'm going to write down 10 good habits and put them out into the world so hopefully it strengthens my resolve and I follow through with achieving them.

The good news is - all of these habits can be helpful for you too!

1. Regular exercise.

I'm so talented at making excuses about not having time to exercise - but I'm shooting myself in the foot. What I've found is that reducing the amount of time in my commitment is incredibly helpful. If I say I'm going to the gym, I'm commit to 15-20 of cardio minutes and then once I'm in there I'll end up doing 40 anyway. Sometimes. Every bit counts! And helps immensely with your energy and focus.

2. Reading for 20 minutes everyday.

Well it doesn't need to be 20 minutes but a good healthy swig of book juice into your brain will really boost your smarts... Perhaps that didn't make sense - all the more reason why I should be picking up a book and learning a little more with every paged turned. We can all use a little extra learning!

3. Drinking water.

Drinking water when you first wake and then loading up throughout the day is probably the simplest and cheapest way to improve the quality of your life. Getting more H20 can improve your digestion, your skin, help you lose weight, give you more energy - it benefits all your bodies process. I'm going to start my day with half a litre with lemon. New promise to myself.

4. Make a routine for waking and sleeping.

Even if you're surrounds are in constant flux, you can still do the same set of actions each morning and night and create a routine. In the morning so you might start your day in a stress free environment, something you can rely on - and then in the evening so you can prepare you body for sleep.

5. Learn something new.

Setting yourself a new challenge can be really rewarding - and can get your brain thinking in new ways. Whether it be a new hobby or even just something small everyday like a new word in your vocabulary. I'm currently studying a bit of Swedish when I can but I really want to pick up my game.

6. Pay compliments.

I love this one. It's really just about doing something for someone else each day - paying compliments can just be the start - eventually you can make bigger contributions. In the words of Audrey Hepburn: 'As you grow older you discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself and the other for helping others.' Boosting the positivity of people around you is a wonderful place to begin.

7. Take 10-15 quiet time.

I really need this. No phone, no laptop, no tv. Just yourself and a calm place to breathe to contemplate your day and your ambitions. Like mediation but less confusing. Quiet and thoughts.

8. Set online boundaries.

I need this one major time - I'm a terrible procrastinator. I feel like I'm improving though - by setting times to achieve tasks and allocating periods to check social media. It's a really challenging one for me to keep but I'm persevering. Getting shit done!

9. Eat more vegetables.

The reasons for this one are pretty obvious, we can all use more vitamins and good health - but the how is much trickier! With a bit of research you can find some good recipes to make vegetables not only palatable but amazing. I recommend 101 cookbooks - the salads are sooo good!

10. Make fewer excuses.

All the people who have achieved greatness in the face of adversity have had the ability to ignore that nagging little voice in their heads that says "I can't do it". So one of the answers to success and achieving what you want is to focus on the abilities you do have, instead of looking around and blaming other variables. You can't change other people but you can change your own trajectory and quest forward with self belief. Telling yourself that you goal isn't possible because of  X or Y is the first step towards failure. Find a way!  #power

Hopefully this list has inspired you to write down something and make small changes for the better too!

Posted this with a super old outfit post - I lost those jeans and still to this day miss them loads. Where are you my sweet Kmart jeans!!?

Checking In: Life Update

Checking in on this week - I don't really have so much to report. I've mostly been working on the Photoshop Basics Course and planning for my new site and weeks ahead, alot of sitting at a desk. I've also joined the gym here in Stockholm! Makes such a difference to my positivity.

One exciting development, I'm currently at Arlanda airport waiting for my flight to Berlin. I've been nominated in the Rising Star category for the Stylight Fashion Influencer Awards. The judges include Bar Rafaeli and Bryan Boy and Klingande is going to be performing.... I think it's going to be an amazing evening! It's something new to be part of a blogger awards that doesn't rely on votes or numbers.... maybe I have a chance?!? Haha!  Either way I'm super thrilled to be nominated to take part. I'm going to film a video for my trip so I'll be posting that on youtube soon - and you can also follow all the action at  #SFIA15

I'm back in Stockholm tomorrow and only a few days left before I fly back to Australia. I'm in two minds about leaving - just when I get into a little routine at some place I have to run away again. I don't mean to complain about the travel... then again maybe I do! No more airports please!

Give me two more weeks in this place though, I'm sure I'll be running out the door passport in hand. I typically thrive for change.

I've got a lot of cool work happening in Australia which I can't tell you about yet because I believe I'll jinx them if I share too early.

How to: Start An Amazing Fashion Blog

Quick-Edit-1
Quick-Edit-6

I receive alot of questions about how best to start a blog, how to make a blog successful, how to make blogging your career - so I've decided its well overdue I address these kinds of questions here on my blog. I'm by no means the biggest or most successful blogger - and there's still going to be mistakes I'm making even today.

To begin with, let's all take a trip to my very first blog post, back in October 2008. It's Here.

The photo looks like it was taken on a two dollar disposable. Did I have ambitions/prospects of becoming a successful blogger back then? Hell no!

Progress for me was quite slow - I started my blog around the time Chiara, Rumi and Andy were all starting to gain momentum. I was inconsistent with my posting, my pictures were terrible - but I was passionate. Most importantly, I didn't have ambitions of fitting in a role that someone else had patented, satisfied with my own journey. It took three years for me to reach the point where I could almost sustain myself on the income from my site. I improved and learnt along the way, what was engaging and how I could share what I loved while still staying true to myself.

Here's a few points detailing what I've learnt.

1. Good pictures are important. I'm sorry to say, if you're going to be a good Fashion Blogger and create original photo content, getting your photo skills up is important. Getting to know how to utilise your urban surroundings is important - the best way to do this is to look at fashion editorials and blogger pictures and find what you like.

2. Being yourself is always best. Writing genuine and engaging content is always easier when it comes from the heart - the best example of this is by looking at Jennifer Lawrence. This is a women who has arrived big time  on the hollywood scene and people love her so much, she's so endearing because she's so candid. It's great to see someone who's happy with themselves, 'flaws' and all. The more you give of your genuine self the more beautiful your blog will be. You don't need to be the coolest, the thinnest, the best dressed - you just gotta be you.

3. Don't follow the formula (too much). This is a challenging one to figure out because the reason a formula exists is because it works - but so often you can look at a new fashion blog and just think 'Where have I seen this before?'. If you wanna see a fashion blog that breaks the mould check out Strange Ambition  (Bonnie doesn't write on it anymore but it's still very fun and cool to read!). Incidentally I saw Bonnie last night here in Berlin but I was too shy to approach her. Regrets!

4. Play your strengths. Don't feel like you have to suddenly blog about runway shows during fashion week just because it's happening. I'm not really the best fashion writer - but I can take my own pictures of the shows! So I just don't write alot of text besides #omgilovethis or whatever. Figure out your strong points and work them.

5. Find satisfaction in your own journey. Don't feel like you have to measure up to anyone else with your followers or statistics or anything like that, envy is a counter productive trap. What you're doing is always going to be worth something if you're writing with passion.  I wrote a longer post related to this topic HERE and it was one of my most popular blog posts EVER.

6. Be consistent. If you want your blog to grow in popularity, one thing that you can trust is that posting regularly is going to help you significantly. It's just science guys.

7. No posts is better than a bad blog post. Perhaps counter to my previous point - but don't throw up any old thing just for the sake of it, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Just do you best - and this rule also applies for instagram! I'll lose followers if I post up a shitty photo. It's better to have nothing.

8. Don't expect to start a blog and be able to earn money right away. For myself - I had to work quite awhile before my work and blog was commercially viable. You need to have something to offer a brand that they can't get anywhere else - and that should take some time! Success doesn't happen overnight in this industry. The important thing is to just get started and keep learning.

I want to write some more points here but I had one (or 3) too many vodka's last night and my brain suddenly feels like mush. I'd love it if you could leave some questions or topics you'd like me address related to this post so I can continue the conversation.

Throwing this post up with pics from my shoot with Sara and Archie (original post here) - sans illustration. Sorry I don't have anything new right now! I'm about to dash off the airport. Next post coming should be a youtube from my time here in Berlin!

:)

My Swedish friends think I'm a moron when it snows, it makes me so happy. Of course my 'Non-snow-dwellers' will understand, this fluffy white business falling from the sky is extremely beautiful and exciting. I get the cons. It's freezing. It's messy. People complain.

I've found some solutions for the freeze, they might not work for everyone - but I've tried to pinpoint the reasons why I love it so damn much and work backwards from there.

1. Catch the train. I don't actually drive here in Stockholm - but I can see that it sucks hard core in the snow because people have to drive very slowly in the ice. Traffic is dreadful and can get a bit dangerous. Positives about the train, it's warm inside - and the weather has to be major bad for it to really slow down the service so you can rely on it not to be late.

2. Wear appropriate footwear. Don't wear sneakers or even boots with no grip. Invest in some kind of hiking boot or something that's lined with shearling or ethical fur. Once you have boots that are pretty much ready for combat then your ability to move around and traverse ice/muddy puddles at intersections will go from a hassle to a breeze.

3. Don't mess around with fashion. What I meant to say here is - don't sacrifice feeling like you have to be stylish over practicality. Notice my lack of outfit posts lately? I'm dressing like trooper thats why. Puffy layers and beanie hair. Honestly - knowing you're going to be warm enough in what you're wearing outside makes the world of difference in your comfort in mobility. Try Uniqlo for puffy jackets, they are cheap and really warm!

3. Take in the scenery. As you can see - the snow turns the the city in a magical wonderland so enjoying the sight can be absolutely wonderful - and very insta-friendly! Haha! In other words, shut up and enjoy it. ;)

4. Appreciate the light. Winter can be dark - especially here in Stockholm. When the snow arrives, it's much brighter for hours later and you get more light in the evenings because the street lights reflect from the ground. Gotta love that warm ambience!

5.  Spread positive thoughts. Soooo people tend to complain alot in the winter - but it's also true that the same people can vibe off your positive juju too! Case in point, I work in an office with a load of people who are super happy and friendly all the time and it's totally infectious. Good times.

6. Wake up early. Maybe this one sucks a bit - but get up early just once and go outside and enjoy that incredible silence you can only get from from a soft sound-proofing blanket of snow all over the city. You have to do it before they plow most of it anyway. It's worth it! Magical.

7. Go Ice Skating. I promise you can't focus on being cold when staying up right is the goal. Once you get the hang of it it's super fun! Exercising outside is great for your mental powers of positivity.

8. Make a snow angel. YOLO.

I actually snapped all these pics this morning on my Canon G1X while I was running a load of errands. It was what got me thinking about how I was skipping around like a smiling moron and the locals were head down and grimacing. I wish I could have taken better shots but as soon as I switch the camera on the low battery sign started flashign so I could only a few pics in each spot before I had to switch it off. I even managed to get a few extra shots in once it went flat by licking the battery and reinserting it. #donttrythisathome

This is an added bonus - I was sent these images from the Stylight team to share with you a photo documentary of the event two days ago in Berlin. I usually don't like to post event images because I'm almost always caught off guard, guffawing or picking my nose (jk). I'm thrilled to find some nice candid images of myself! Except that first one - which is totally not candid... werk it!

One of the highlights of the evening was having an awesome opportunity to wear this wonderful Teotoki jumpsuit - designed by my friend Emelie here in Stockholm, a sister doing it for herself! I love that! Not to mention the jumpsuit is so perfect. I'm into being covered neck to toe and still feeling glamorous.  Teotoki also have a range of jumpsuits that work for different body types - check them out!

Thanks again Stylight for putting up all the bloggers - and again, if you want to see the results of the awards click HERE. As you can I had a whole load of fun.

I'm so thrilled to finally share this with you The Zanita Academy Photoshop Basics Course.

For years I've been asked about the kind of editing I use for my images and I've been so cagey about giving away my secrets... but the truth is, it's actually so easy to do it seems a shame to keep it all to myself. The course isn't a conventional Photoshop Course - I've never studied nor taken any lessons in using the program, the result is that my techniques are like a whole series of shortcuts. Perfect for bloggers who are working on lots of images every week!

The first image shown here is totally unedited - the second is edited using the techniques I run through in the Photoshop Basics Course - and it's incredibly easy!

Ok well maybe not the world's biggest - but maybe the best? Perfect for these snowy climes at the very least.

I've been avoiding posting this all day - I'm disappointed in myself because I've lost my traction with the posting and dealing with three long haul flights. Whenever I feel bad about not posting, I stop looking at all my social media and reading my comments because I feel really guilty, which only exaercerbates the problem... Always the best idea, if something is stressing you out - face it! Make it your priority.  I'm glad I have these pics, I can get stuck into creating some new content tomorrow. Rain go away!

So I've delayed enough and now I'm posting - and the rest of this evening I can enjoy with Sara. Great to be back in Sydney!

The ironic thing about my writing this post now is that I'm doing a fairly poor job of coping with my jet lag - being that I haven't followed my own tips! Sometimes it's just easier to give in to the call of a night's sleep. At 4pm.

Some of you might not be so familiar with the pitfalls of jet lag - the medical term is actually 'time-zone-change-syndrome' or 'desynchronosis'.  I've had friends whom get pretty sick from it, nauseous and the like - for the most part it's really about needing to sleep and wake at the wrong times, an interrupted body clock.

I HATE JETLAG. I just find it lonely and depressing, especially when I'm returning to the land of darkness aka Sweden in the winter - and it's a horrible feeling to be unbearably tired in the day time when you're trying to just, you know, dream - believe - achieve stuff.

ok.

1. Don't eat loads on the plane - especially if you're on a long flight and you're doing nothing. It hurt's to get bloaty-y when you're sitting frozen in position like a battery hen - and FACT, gases expand 30 percent more when at altitude... meaning things could get... musical. Feeling light when you disembark is going to help the recovery process.

2. Green tea is your friend. How I learnt about this: Back when I was modelling I would have moments where I felt a little neurotic about my weight, some trainer had told me that green tea helped you drop a kg fast so I'd get to the end of the day and chug about 12 cups of green tea in one go. I can't really comment on whether it helped with the weight lose because - there is no real quick fix peeps - but it did keep me awake ALL night. Not in a wired/coffee kind of way though. I actually just thought I didn't need the sleep. ANYWAY - here's something I ripped direct from the interwebs. The combined stimulant effects of caffeine, theobromine and theophylline in green tea may be balanced by another substance in the tea, the amino acid L-Theanine which simultaneously calms the nervous system and enhances concentration abilities. So try out the tea!

3. Melatonin. You can buy this wonder stuffs from your doctor (in Australia) though perhaps across the counter in some countries. It's supposedly a non-addictive-sleep-helper-friend. #actualtechterms  I've found it to be pretty beneficial in helping me  acclimatise to a new body clock - but use it as directed by your doctor or pharmacist because I don't want to be sued. Thanks!

4. Exercise. Sigh.  I resent that exercise helps with everything to do with vitality and wonderment but it just does. The most awful part of this tip is that I can't be bothered exercising when I'm jet lagged because I'm tired and excellent at making excuses not to exercise. I promise I'll do some squats and push ups after I do this post.

5. Being social. Stay away from your couch and your bed and try and get out and do things and be social - basically distract yourself from the creeping feeling of tiredness. I used to say add a few glasses of wine into the mix here but that's not really going to help you in the long run... or maybe for some of you it will! Feel free to experiment. And be safe.

Anyway, that's the best I have so far and if you have any more tips I'd love to hear them because I HATE JETLAG.

:) x
