The Talented Ms Hess

Well another few days have past since checking in but I'm extremely thrilled to be posting this work of art by the vastly talented Megan Hess. Is it wrong for me to say that this image of myself feels iconic? Probaby - but its really a comment about Megan's romantic and timeless drawing style. I like to consider myself fairly modest but when I saw this work of art my head swelled up, ever that little more. Not only because the artwork itself is so beautiful - but because I must be doing something right for an artist of Megan's calibre to illustrate me in this way. I don't really know if there can be much higher flattery than having a true artist represent your likening. So - Megan - my big puffy head thanks you humbly. This is the coolest thing ever!!

Megan has also directed her talents in creating animation which is very fun (check it out HERE) along with the rest of her portfolio HERE. Thanks again Megan for representing me with your awesome talent - I feel so lucky to be able to share this!

Meanwhile I have much to report about my work this week - and then also alot I'm going to be quite cagey about...for legal reasons, we mustn't give too much away. For now it's time for me to sleep so I'll have to fill you in tomorrow. I've now been working in TV for a week and its more exhausting than I anticipated but also much more fun. I didn't think I would be ok with having a camera following me around all the time but its seems it's not really so bad after all! I don't seem to notice them so much… hope I don't get caught picking out a wedgy.

Love me some navy - this skirt is a perfect addition to my wardrobe. A great professional looking piece that could work for meetings and something that I'm sure  would also be a great addition to a minimalist sporty look with a sweat and sneakers (cc Raspberry N Rouge) - also avail in black. I'm so happy to be posting this up today for you all - I've had a busy week but a fairly free weekend to shoot what I wore over the past week. It's cheating a little bit - but I also used the opportunity to enlist the help of my Gervin friend and former assistant. Gervin is a fantastic photographer in his own right and its great to see his style develop over the last couple of years.

Now I'm rushing back to the studio for more filming - its amazing how much work goes into producing a tv show! I'm loving being in front of the camera and getting the chance to share the reality of what I do. Can't really comment on whether its going to make for good tv but I'm excited to watch and also get an insight into how my fellow bloggers operate. Each of us has really shaped our own method of working, there's not really a mould to follow for this career path. I hope you get to see that each girl is striving to be unique and a successful business woman in her own right!

Jokes aside, I certainly feel my personal style is maturing  - while always favouring a relaxed aesthetic, I'm not afraid to wearing something representative of my years (for those of you who don't know, I'm 28).  As I get older, I'm also learning more about what it takes in running your own business - and so I'm more inclined to dress the part. I always felt similarly about dressing when I was modelling. When casting for commercial client - dress neat and tidy, very polished. If you look like you're getting paid then the client can assert that you're worth the investment. Dress like the woman you want to be!

Meanwhile I'm pretty stressed out today - tomorrow night I'm flying back to Stockholm and before that I have 4 meetings, one campaign shoot, three separate filming sets, one dinner… and one Skype call with my accountant, if I can fit that in! My room looks like an explosion of clothing and I've got to pack more into my suitcase than I can actually fit. It's 8am now - I think I've drunk too many coffees already because I'm suddenly feeling a little more excited than I ought to be at this early hour… expecting a crash later today. Wish me luck! :)

And I'm not trying to sound flippant - because really, I'm still pinching myself that I'm still going. I didn't intend for this when I started out, it's all grown beyond past my control. Of course I'm speaking of this manic 'fashion blogger' journey I'm on, which has been suddenly accelerated by my participation in the Fashion Bloggers TV show I'm currently filming. Right now however, I'm flying back to Sweden and spending a nearly a week in my adoptive city (Stockholm) with my darling sister. Three years younger but world's apart - she's really a treasure in my life and someone I rarely have the chance to see. So I'll endeavour to work as much as can to share what we see - much sight seeing ahead!

Following Swedish adventures - NYFW. I land in NYC on the 4th of September and I'm so excited to be back in the coolest city in the world for the hottest event going down. I've been invited to some KILLER shows - but I don't want to give too much away now or jinx myself, because anything can really happen in NY. Break a leg? I just might.

Meanwhile I'm posting this outfit post, it's all about the coat! Time to board my flight… 14 hours till Dubai, meet my sister at the gate, board again, 7 hours till Stockholm. #life #love #lucky

These sneakers were the only pair of flat shoes I packed for my trip to Sydney so I ended up having to pair them with everything. I kinda wish I had something a little more delicately shaped for this outfit - in fact one thing I'm lamenting about my wardrobe of late is it's missing a pair of white converse. I reckon they are a shoe that literally go with everything - even eveningwear - but then that's just a product of my wanting to dress down everything I own. So often I'm asking myself - how can I make this look more relaxed?

So busy trying to plan a million things right now - so please excuse this being a shorter post. Hopefully I can include more tomorrow - my brain is a little frazzled with jetlag. It's such a bad feeling - like I'm in the wrong place and time. As soon as it passes I'm on the move again!

Life is moving a real pace! And its hard for me to keep up - and every time I speak to my blogger friends I learn they are in really simlar predicaments. I wonder if this 'fashion blogger' phenomenon will slow down anytime soon…? Or if it's really just an indicator of things to come - like with all these youtube celebrities who have millions and millions of followers, more influential than major movie stars or singers. Web celebrities! Web-lebrities! Haha!

While I do have a pretty healthy following online, I don't have people stopping on the street or asking for my autograph regularly. Which makes me wonder about Fashion Bloggers TV - because suddenly I'll have an entirely new kind of audience and also be showing my work in a completely new way, uncensored and unfiltered. I realise I'm going to be putting myself in a pretty vulnerable position, being judged for not only my work but my personality and mannerisms. I hope I can handle it! And I hope you also don't find me too strange! I'm not really as composed or elegant as my pictures often seem… they are just like that because I used to work as a model!

It's all part of an escalating adventure - and I'm glad I can continue share it with you. I'm very much looking forward to going to NYFW next week - but apparently the weather is going to be horrible. 30 degrees and heavy rain. NASTY!

Meanwhile this is an outfit from back in Sydney - my favourite denim skirt getting a working over again.

How to Do Your Make-up Like A Model

I figure if I'm going to go on Tv and totally ruin my 'cool fashion blogger mystique'  (oxymoron!) then I may as well just go to town and give it all away. I'm not particularly talented when it comes to doing my own make-up… well, I guess I do know what I like and don't, having had my make-up done a whole load of times by talented makeup artists…. I just prefer when all women wear less. When I was in my early 20's I wore more make-up and I started to become dissatisfied with my look when I wasn't wearing it - so instead - I stopped wear make-up in everyday circumstances and became much happier about my natural appearance. Now I just wear make-up for work , even though i'd prefer not to! I don't like to put emphasis on it in my routine.

Sooo my advice is, do your make-up like a model! As in - trust your face is really gorgeous as it is and use just a little make-up to gently enhance the features you've got. Less is always more.

I'm in NYC, it's 8am and I've been up for three hours. For once having jet lag is a win because it puts me to bed early and awake in the wee hours of the morning - when I work best. I'm the kind of person who can't function well in the evenings, an automatic shut down of my work mode. So all blog posts are edited prior to my busy day!

Zimmermann was the first show I attended here in NYC - and I'm so excited to share the collection. I hope I'm able to loan some great pieces for events in the future - namely, the Elle Style Awards and also the Fashion Bloggers Tv Show Launch (October 15! Eeek!! So soon!). I've always really admired the craftsmanship that goes into every Zimmermann collection, but until now, I've never felt the brand sat well with my personal aesthetic. I'd love to think that now, I'm a Zimmermann girl - as my style has evolved into something more feminine and confident.

I'm so grateful to have been invited backstage to share my view of the collection. Thanks so much to the whole Zimmermann team and congratulations on another beautiful Spring season.

Well, in a sense it helps - when the weather is super humid I have to use products, dry shampoo in the roots and serum in the ends to tame the frizz (slightly). The humidity definitely helps in the volume stakes - and I'm rocking a proper eighties look, like a perm. The weather does make my hair a bit volatile though - who does how big and fluffy it can get! before I had this haircut I would have been terrified of the humidity, probably wearing a headscarf or something to just cover it up. So glad I discovered how my hair is 'meant to be'.

So  this is a look I wore on my day 2 of NYFW (though its actually day 3) and I felt great in it - because it was super practical in the heat, these Tibi overalls are super breezy and the look felt very 'me', not too fancy. The first show I attended on this day was Dion Lee - and the collection was beautiful, I'll be posting my edit soon.

These first days of NYFW are some of my busiest and I'm filled with manic energy. As the week progress it's going to calm down a little and I'll have more room for meetings and blogger collaborations. Excited to share alot more in the coming days!

We decided to take the chance to visit the 'Top of the Rock' prior to attending the Bloglovin' awards last night -  where I'm so proud to say that Gary Pepper took out well deserved 'Best Photography' award. Congratulations to Nicole for her vision and to Luke and Carin for their talented work behind the lens. Gary Pepper is truly an inspiration!

I wish I had more time this morning to edit some more - Rodebjer and Dion Lee to come as soon as I get a chance!  Now I'm running of to Tommy Hilfiger show! Exciting!

Much overdue blog post , sometimes when I skip a few days on my blog I feel so guilty that I avoid thinking about posting or looking at my blog and social media. It's quite easy to do because I'm busy - and flying back from NYC to Australia, I lose so much time in transit. A week can slip by so quickly! So I'm sorry - but I do have a lot of content backed up which is good.

I really want to speak more about what I'm doing but being that it's part of Fashion Bloggers TV, I'm required to be a bit cagey. Can't give to much away! I'm back in Sydney next week after a brief sojourn down to Esperance to see my darling parents. I miss them so much! Esperance is an isolated town and I really only make it down there 2/3 times a year.

This was probably my favourite look from NYFW, and just to brag a little bit - I had loads of people approach me on the street and comment on my skirt. It's a really special piece! Very luxurious to wear.

Thanks for being patient with me!

Excited to share this new project I'm undertaking - number one of a four part series with Aussie brand Sportscraft. The first part of this instalment was snapped in Chinatown, NYC - a vibrant cultural hub bordering the Lower East Side. Being an Australian, I've always felt a particular connection and affinity for Asian food and culture.  Sydney's best cuisine is a result of the great influx of immigrants from all parts of Asia, bringing what they know to combine with Western styles to make something contemporary and exciting. Truly modern Australian! So it's thus - Chinatown really is the place in NYC where I feel most at home, uniquely enough. I can't get enough of Chinese dumplings and Vietnamese Pho from my favourite haunts.

Thanks Sportscraft for having me onboard to share this NYC vision! More to come.

A super fun project to work on - this Candidate campaign - modelled by  fellow blogger Nadia Fairfax, styled by General Pants Design Director Pip Edwards and of course, designed by  the very talented Candice Lake. I was so honoured to be asked to shoot this because of my special connection to Candice herself - years ago, when she was in photo school and I was a fledgling model, I worked with her on one of her first photo shoots… unfortunate to say it wasn't either of our prouder career moments but it's certainly a testament to how far we've both come! We always laugh about it. Good times.

Fellow blogger alumni Nadia really worked it for our images and her moves could have outshone any professional model - and Pip's roller-skate theme pulled the fun mood all together. The planets aligned! I'm looking forward to seeing these Candidate pieces on the street. Effortlessly cool.

There's much to tout about my adoptive nation but mostly, the fashion. Swedes are extremely well dressed - in fact, even if someone doesn't follow fashion, they usual still dress pretty tidy. It makes sense then - that Swedish fashion brands kill it. I've had one eye out for Rodebjer these last few years and this new collection shown in New York feels progressive and wearable. I love the long and loose silhouettes and the slim scarves. That all white look is on my must have list! Think I could pull that off at a red carper event? I love the unexpected - and you won't catch me dead in body con. Bigger is better!

Here's to rocking Rodebjer by next 'North Hem' Spring! (if only the South - I want it now!). Thanks so much to the team for inviting me to see their awesome collection at NYFWSS15.

Listen

It's been quite awhile since I did a music post. Lately my life has been filled with more tasks than I have time to achieve them in - so I've been listening to the most relaxing sounds I can find. This a collection of songs I love, dreamy and easy listening. Some tracks are pretty well known but hopefully some will be new to you!

I love music with a passion. I feel lucky to be the kind of person who can be moved by song on a regular basis. When life gets complicated - music can lift you, take you somewhere else, change your mind, help you escape. Sometimes it's all you need.

Dion's Army

I would never really describe my own personal style as sleek and sexy, two words which certainly portray the Dion Lee woman. I like to think I'm pretty versatile though and through nifty styling, I can make alot more than you could expect - work for me. Normally when I look at Dion's collections - I dream up an editorial about a powerful and confident woman, probably featuring mysterious and sophisticated looking model like Saskia De Brauw, Vanessa Axente or Amanda Murphy…. This collection however, I saw myself in some of the quirkier coloured pieces - fingers crossed I can loan a sample for something special in the future (and it fits me).

Dion can do anything! Bravo on another great collection in NYC.

A monochromatic look from NYFW - on a day I mostly just attended meetings and hung about. I visited this spot in Central Park to take these images - I remembered from shooting Jess a year before, such a romantic looking little bridge - and close to Wholefoods, so I scored some healthy snacks afterwards. Such a practical outfit - that I also felt really good in. Win!

If you're following me on instagram you'll know I'm currently down in Esperance getting some much needed family time - only 5 days but it's so much better than nothing! It's a good chance to catch up on posting (go me) and emails. I'm sure you all get sick of bloggers complain about emails but its part of my life, drowning in correspondence. Hell of alot better than not drowning in though!

Post this, I'm in Sydney for a number of weeks working on loads of different projects and more Fashion Bloggers TV business. I've developed a few new goals  since the show began filming -and one of them is gaining the means and time to have a full-time PA. I always thought having a PA was for the rich and famous - but it's actually incredibly practical for someone in my position and I've learnt alot of full time fashion bloggers work with someone in this way- especially those that don't work with the blogger/boyfriend arrangement! I had an intern over NYFW, Christine, and she was worth her weight in gold - my stress levels were waaaaaaay down. I might be fairly tuned in realising creative ideas but there  are so many things I have to tackle in running a business that I'm simply a bit under qualified for - like keeping my shit organised and my schedule running smoothly!  As each month passes - my to-do list gets crazier. I need to figure out how to make a PA work in my life… I certainly couldn't afford to fly someone with me everywhere! Like I said - new goal. I've talking about it for some time but having Christine help me made me realise, I could be doing things much better. Time to learn to relinquish a little control and delegate.

Hey Elle

Excuse my vanity for a moment - but I have to say this is maybe the best portrait of me ever… And full credit obviously has to go to fellow model turned photographer Danielle Rech. This shoot was a part of a feature - 8 girls all nominated for the Elle Style Awards Blogger of the year… and you can vote HERE!

Thanks so much Elle Magazine Australia for having me onboard, truly an honour and a career highlight. :)

On a side note; to address some of you questions, Fashion Bloggers TV will airing throughout Asia Pacific for now - as for the rest, we'll have to wait and see. Fingers crossed!

We live in a very beautiful world.

These shots (bar one) are aerial snaps I took on a recent helicopter ride (lucky I know) over Broome in the north of Western Australia, from the township to the Willy Creek Pearl Farm. I had visited Broome once before, with my folks. We drove the 2,569km journey all the way from Esperance up through the middle of Western Australia, right through the desert. Last time, no aerial viewing was involved - but we did have an amazing ride on a hovercraft through the mangroves! It's hard to believe that this is really part of Australia when you live in the south, the tropical heat and the red dirt and incredibly green/blue hued water.

The first image is of Gantheaume Point and the building is actually a local residence. Talk about prime real estate! The sunrise shot further down is snapped at the same location… I don't think I've ever caught the sunrise in a more magical place. Apparently there's dinosaur footprints there but I didn't have a chance to catch them.

I wish I could have stayed longer in Broome… but at least I've learnt more reasons to go back. One day when I'm a famous photographer shooting the cover's of magazines like Vogue and Harper's Bazaar - I can visit again and create a wild, northern editorial. Fashion!

Anyway in summary, visit Western Australia. You won't forget it.
